Every visual and musical part of the work is sublime first, and conscious second, right down to the eerie feeling that the great “eye” of the stage is coolly regarding us, and that at many times throughout this long concert, we feel like the universe’s ineffable secrets of matter, time, forces, and life are unveiling themselves in front of us, in ways we’ll never be able to put into words, but understand, like children’s dreams, instantly. We are gobsmacked and awed. This audience was truly lucky. What a masterpiece.
Remembering " ...far away across the field The tolling of the iron bell Calls the faithful to their knees to hear the softly spoken magic spells " (lyrics from " Time").
This is the last song on their last album, "The Division Bell", (Before "Endless River" 20 years later, which was after Rick Wright had passed away.) This song is very nostalgic. The division bell is a feature of British parliament signaling the end of debate as votes are to be cast. Here the ringing bell signals choices we make and choices we have made through time. The album itself is about communication. And as important as that is, in the end decisions have to be made. Decisions have to be lived with. The song and its accompanying video are full of allusions to the past. The gong at the back of the stage for instance reminds me of Roger Waters on "Set the Controls For the Heart Of the Sun" in their Live At Pompeii movie. Although denied by Gilmour, one can't help seeing the rift that had been developing that led Waters to leave the band in 1985. The men on stilts representing the songs "Welcome To The Machine" and "Have a Cigar". The large bust being carried by the men is that of Syd Barrett. One quirky little factoid not presented in this performance but it is on the album, at the very very end and after High Hopes has fully faded out, There is a phone call (allusion to "The Wall) from Steve O'Rourke, Pink Floyd's manager, to the Gilmour residence. David's young son, Charlie, answers the phone. Before O'Rourke can deliver his message though, Charlie hangs up. O'Rourke responds somewhat exasperated "Great". The back story is that O'Rourke had always wanted to appear on a Pink Floyd album but he never got the opportunity, and that closes the book on Pink Floyd...almost.
Dude, I'd love to see your reaction to "Sorrow" from the same 1994 Pulse concert, and "Learning to Fly", "Money" too. The live version of "Money" from Pink Floyds 1973 Epic, "Dark Side of the Moon" album in 1973, yes, the Pulse version of "Money" is off the charts brah! Have you done "Comfortably Numb" from Pulse? If not, THAT'S got to be the next PF reaction. It is an epic performance of the song with probably the GOAT of Blues based guitar soloing you'll ever hear! Everything from Pulse is exceptional. You, being a music guy will appreciate Pink Floyds production man, whether it's in the studio or live, their Production is top notch, they always sound sooo great! Tip; Always use the Re-Edited and Re-stored Pulse versions when you can.
