Back in 1982 I almost bought one of these in dark metallic red with bucket seats. At the last minute the guy decided to give the car to his daughter LOL

I feel for you Brother, I have a similar story- back in 1987 when I was in the Army a local delicatessen owner was selling his 1981 Trans Am, I almost closed the deal with him and he just like your seller "gave it to his daughter"!! I always thought that was strange, why did he even try to sell it?? I ended up getting a much cheaper Mercury Zephyr coupe and drove it 11 years until it died...

Enjoyed the old video since I'm a 73 GTO owner. But I must offer a bit of a correction. The oil embargo didn't happen until November of 73, which was well into the 1974 model year. So the oil embargo did not affect 1973 sales, since it didn't happen yet. So, that's not the reason they only sold about 4800 73 GTO's. GTO sales had already been dropping. They only sold about 5800 GTO's in 1972. So for 1973, Pontiac didn't promote the 73 GTO much. Many people didn't even know there was a 73 GTO. There was one small picture of it in the corner of a page in the 73 Pontiac dealer brochure. Instead Pontiac was more interested in selling their brand new 1973 Grand Am, and advertised the Grand Am with full page spreads and tv commercials. And it worked since they sold over 43,000 Grand Ams in 73. By the way, the scooped hood was standard on a 73 GTO, so you didn't have to order it as an option. It came with the GTO. So, the guy who traded in the Vega didn't know there was going to be an oil crisis coming the following year 🙂.

Grand Am was planned to be "1972 GTO", but then UAW strike delayed the colonnade body to '73.

Nice. My favorite year of the GTO. GM’s colonnade cars don’t get the respect they deserve. It’s a rarity to find one of these with the bench seat and column shift. She’s nice and very reasonably priced.

The related Cutlass was the one that sold like hotcakes in this period, and at this writing, I'm hoping that most or all of these are well cared for!

@@davidallen5776 The Cutlass was nice during this period. My brother had a 75 Cutlass Supreme with bucket seats (don’t remember if they were swivel or not) but it was black with a white vinyl roof. The seats had the reversible cushions that were black or white. That was a beautiful car. I was pissed when he traded it in. This was in the late 70s or early 80s. I wasn’t old enough or I would have bought it off him. Either this or his 68 GTO was my favorite car he ever had.

I have a 1973 Pontiac LeMans Sport Coupe with the 400 engine same engine as this. It runs great. It doesn't have the hood and the badge and has automatic transmission. Doesn't have the 455 engine. But, it still runs great. They have a much better ride than the cars from 1972 and before.

Oil Embargo started in October when the 74's were coming out. Before October, big cars sold well.

I think we'd gladly take 50 cents a gallon in 2023!⛽🚗🚙 🚚🛻 I realize it was all relative to whatever people earned back then, the value of a dollar etc. Thirty cents a gallon increase must have been a real kick in the pants at that time, but still....
