I saw Riverdance live in ‘99 or ‘00 with my mom. It was one of the happiest memories I have of her, it was a mesmerizing experience, I’ll never forget it. Someday I hope to take my daughters to see it too.
I’m surprised they went through with it! NYC is already the worst in the US when it comes to the coronavirus. They should have postponed it. Probably way more people got infected
Kay Muldoon One of the dancers tested positive I heard last week. Very irresponsible to have a show at 2pm when the ban was at 5pm. Especially considering Radio City holds like 3 times as many people as broadway theaters.
I remember being given special permission by my Mum to stay up and watch Riverdance in the half time show at Eurovision. I had to go and get my pyjamas on and be ready to go straight to bed when it finished. (Yeah right! I loved it and even 25 years later I still adore it!) When I got to Middle School, Riverdance The New Show was on tour locally so a group from school went to The Derngate Theatre in Northampton to see it. I was absolutely transfixed! I would love to see it again if possible.
I used to do this when I was much younger! My cousins and I also competed in it. My one cousin won the worlds in Ireland 🇮🇪 It was so much fun and what a workout!! I also saw them the first time around at Radio City music hall. 💚Great show!! 💚
I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the first performance at Radio City Music Hall 10th row center Orchestra. It was love at first sight for me and Riverdance and for Maria Pages and Flamenco Dance as well. Yet I am not of Irish or Hispanic heritage just a world traveler. Can’t believe it is 25 years now.
I went when it was 1998 and they were touring the States. Sold out. They opened up the orchestra pit, and we bought and they were the best seats in the opera house. A very special surprise treat from my best friend and my fiance. Loved it. I wish I could go again. But I dint live in the country anymore.
I played that VHS on loop! I love Riverdance and I also loved seeing Lord of the Dance. Jean Butler and her second co-star put together a fantastic show called Dancing on Dangerous Ground, which I saw on Ovation.
I'll always remember seeing Riverdance for the first time... I was a young adult and Eurovision was naff to me and my friends at that time (1994).. my parents had taped it (VHS days) and I was mesmerized watching these magicians and their crazy feet..❤🇮🇪
Since I was little I had always been fascinated w/Ireland & loved seeing River dance. 3 yr ago I tested my DNA & found out that I am 97% European w/ 71% Irish. Its disappointing that both my mom & dads side never discussed or kept any traditions from our families that came to US. Just crazy how I was drawn all these years to my roots.
@@mjw12345 maybe that's a possibility. I really think my ancestors were a spiritual guidance. Yes, I was little when I found out there was a Shannon river 😊

Flatleys huge ego cost him big time. He actually though that Riverdance was all about himself. It was nice to know that the two people responsible told him to go pound salt.
Yeah Lord of the Dance and Fleet of Flames were wildly successful. He's no different than sports stars or artists in their prime getting their due. He did what he needed, and helped this style of dance and art spread throughout the world.
Wow. Has it really been 25 years? LOVED Riverdance when it came to my PBS station, I must have seen every repeat showing! I could tell Flatley was a bunch of egotistical hot air even through the TV (can only imagine what he was like to be with in real life) but boy could he dance. A spinoff was called "Burn the Floor" featuring several different types of dance styles EQUALLY amazing as Riverdance. If those kids didn't make you want to go outside and run around the neighborhood, you might have been comatose! Great stuff!
I remember reading about River Dance when Michael Flatley was part of it but it is a team effort not just one man. This is toe tapping grab you by the heart entertainment.
I doubt they'll ever be another Jean Butler or Michael Flatley either. But this production is really outstanding including the "international" segments; delighted to see a lady in the tap-dance line up - she's fabulous, great smile!
I think you are correct! I loved Michael! It’s like he can fly. Effortless. He’s the Mikhail Baryshnikov of Riverdance. I’m sure his demands were high. It’s too bad they couldn’t come to a compromise. We all lost.
As a black woman who trained in ballet, I Loooove 💞💕 this show and it always sends shivers down my spine !!! 🥴 I'm dreaming of one day, visiting Ireland and seeing that beautiful country !!✈️💚🍀🇮🇪 Until then, I will continue to watch this show over and over and over again !!!🥰🤗 I have both the Michael Flatley version and the one with Colin Dunne. I have tickets to see the show here in Philadelphia next year. My only issue, is how they keep changing parts of the show and that is a bad mistake. In the original show, 2 of my favorite songs were Andalucia and Macedonia Morning. In the Colin Dunne/ NYC version, those songs were removed . I loved when Ivan Thomas sang 'Heal their Hearts' along with the rest of the cast but then I heard, that in more recent versions of the shows, 'Heal their Hearts and Lift the Wings, were dropped. I wish they wouldn't tamper with the the music ; the compositions are part of what makes the show so magical and memorable. Remember the saying: " if it aint broke, don't fix it".😮
We have several Irish Dance schools in my area. Every year the largest Irish music and cultural festival outside of Ireland itself is held here and I go to all of them. One thing I have been seeing since Riverdance is how much the competition dancing has gone the "Toddlers and Tiaras" route and it is very disappointing. The dancers are so glitzed up with huge curly wigs, tons of make-up, and even LED lights on their costumes. I really wish we would go back to where the dancing is the important part, not the look. On the other hand, I am seeing more and more kids from other ethnicities getting into step dancing which is really cool. One of the African dance schools teams up with one of the Irish dance schools and they perform at both Irish Fest and the African World Festival. It is a great way to see both the similarities (especially the drumming) and the differences in the two styles.
I feel like it’s started going back the other way. Very slowly, maybe, but some of the more gaudy aspects seem more toned down these days. But LED lights? lol have you really seen that or are you just exaggerating for effect
@@Wafaloo Nope. The first time I saw it was at a local competition about 7 years ago. I will admit I haven't been to a competition in about 5 years so there is a chance they are no longer allowed (which lines up with your comment that it is starting to go back). It looked like someone took fairy lights and outlined a couple of the main embroidery elements with them.
It was never the same without Flatley, without whom it would never have taken off. He brought the drama and excitement that ignited the response. No performance without him since then has been as electric.

As Michael tells it, he didn't storm out of anything, he was fired; Michael's attorney contacted him and told hiim he was out. And as for the contract matters, again, it isn't quite as it is explained here: there was to be the loss of control Michael had over the coreography; there were demands that all Michael's material be owned and copyrighted by Riverdance; and there was complete restriction put upon Michael from augmenting the show to be more than just a generic production. So let's be a bit opened minded, shall we, that we weren't there and that it's best not to take jabs at either Michael or Riverdance.
Henry Mayer Ironic you’d say that. They decided to let the first two shows go on 12 and the matinee on the 13 at Radio City in New York. Meanwhile the governor announced the day before that he was shutting down all shows at 5pm on the 13th. One of the dancers later tested positive for the virus supposedly. Pretty irresponsible.
