John: ‘One sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us… everything that I was taking for granted - because that’s the way we were brought up. My history of relationships with women is very poor - very macho, very stupid, but pretty typical of a certain type of man, which I was, I suppose - a very insecure, sensitive person acting out very aggressive and macho. Trying to cover up the feminine side, which I still have a tendency to do, but I'm learning. I'm learning that it's all right to be soft and allow that side of me out. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It’s a 'we' or it ain’t anything.'
ABOUT THE VIDEO
The video for 'Woman' was directed and edited by Yoko Ono Lennon as a tribute to John in early 1981, during a very raw time soon after John's murder, while Yoko was still in mourning. The footage of John & Yoko together had been directed by their old friend, photographer Ethan Russell on 26 November 1980 - a sunny autumn day in Central Park in the area that would later be called 'Strawberry Fields' and at the Sperone Westwater Fischer Gallery at 142 Greene Street in SoHo, New York. There are further shots of a grieving Yoko (in a white fur coat or grey jacket), directed by Yoko and filmed at the Dakota and alone on the benches at Strawberry Fields in January 1981, that are combined with album covers, artwork, and a selection of photos by John, Bob Gruen, Nishi F. Saimaru, David Nutter, Kishin Shinoyama, Iain Macmillan, David Spindel, Paul Goresh and others. The video was remastered in 2003 from all the original footage and further enhanced in HD in 2019.

I met John Lennon by chance at the Carlton Hotel in Johannesburg in 1980. I was riding up the escalator to have lunch with a friend when John passed me going down ... I couldn't believe it was him.
I quickly went back down and followed him into the foyer of the hotel. I asked him to sign an autograph for me, which he gladly did. His overwhelming presence still haunts me to this day almost 40 years on.

My wife and I bought this album the day it came out. It was our favorite. I still have that album and will pass it on to one of our kids as a family heirloom. My wife passed in 2020 and I think of her whenever I hear music by John. I break down when certain songs play, songs that were a big part of our lives. This is one of those songs. I miss you Clare 💖

I am randomly watching this on Dec 28th 2023, over 43 years after Johns death. The song still comes up fresh to me, it still gives me goosebumps, I still look at John as a very 'cool' guy who was a very talented musician. I still feel 17 years old when I hear this song. It is still early December 1980, and I have only just bought 'Double Fantasy', and I am so pleased that after a few years John has come up with an album so good. John is frozen in time in my mind and my heart. 'Woman' is still about my girl, Lisa. There are so many things I would change in my life, and one would be to have the possibility for us not to lose John, and for John to live his life and continue doing what he wanted, which I am sure would have meant many more beautiful songs, and I suspect at least some sort of reunion with The Beatles, even if only for a few songs. He was so far ahead of his time. They all were. My comment is the 21,400th comment just on this video. I live near to Johns Ascot home in England, and I hope one year to get over to Strawberry Fields in NYC to commemorate one of Johns birthdays. RIP John Lennon.

I'm a nurse assistant. Just recently I had a patient that had cancer and was declared hospice. He loved music so much. So-- I would play music for him on my phone of his choice. He loved the music from the 60s and 70s... This was his last song request before he was moved to the hospice unit. I found out shortly after he passed.
I truly hope they continued to play music for him. RIP my friend.

I was 10, my mother was listening to the news and she was shocked when she heard about John Lennon. I had never heard of him. The following day I went to my friend’s birthday party. It's so heartbreaking that John was murdered forty-three years ago this month. Surprisingly, Yoko never remarried. This song has been in my heart forever. I cry when I hear it. I had just departed the plane that flew me from Korea to San Francisco. I was in the middle of the airport and this song was playing and I had just heard someone say that John Lennon had been shot and died. I’m standing there in full dress Army Uniform with tears flowing down my cheeks. A man and his wife come over to me and we embrace and cry together. The entire time this beautiful song is playing over the loud speaker

If I could pick one song in all of the millions of songs out there to claim that I had written, this one would be it. The sound of pure love. So effortless & beautiful. Nothing forced or pretentious about it. No great studio magic or special effects required to pull it off. That’s the mastery of John Lennon. Just a few simple chords arranged and sung in such a way that makes the whole greater than than the sum of its parts. It makes me sad to think about all of the unrealized masterpieces that got taken from us when he left, but I have to be thankful for what he did share with us while he was here. Thank you John! ❤

I can't listen to this without crying. What is wrong with this world ? So many years later, Why would someone kill John Lennon? Happy 90th Birthday Yoko 2-18.
He was for peace. Governments want war for monetary gain in investing in war materials stocks for themselves and for the armament manufacturers they subsidize. Plus, I suspect it was not for some personal hatred by the man who is accused of doing it (not mentioning him), but for his world influence for peace among all nations, the most famous man in the world pushing for peace, who came out of retirement to play his desire in music. Therefore a hit job.
Sadly, the fellow who murdered him was an evangelical Christian from Georgia (who had moved to Hawaii) who hated Lennon. I originally hadn't realized this until I watched some documentaries about the situation. What an unbelievable and sad world. I'm so happy Yoko made it to 90 though.
