    I took my '73 super beetle to two mechanics and they couldnt fix it. I took a closer look myself and could see the overflow hoses were cracked. So after paying a lot of money, I ordered the parts and fixed it myself in less than an hour! Thank you for sharing!

    Great video! I have owned vw's since college--and the three things (besides rust) that kill these cars are fires--started by a) fuel filter leak in engine compartment, b) rear seats shorting out on the battery terminals of a "tall battery"....and c) ignition of fuel and vapor from that god-awful expansion chamber under dash---I almost lost my last super beetle convertible due to the last---lucky I had a fire extinguisher literally on hand...lol Really thankful for the time you took to do this!

      Thank you very much Mike! I always relocate my fuel filters on top of the Transaxle. I think I did two different videos on that. With that bracket I buy from the samba classifieds.
      I always carry a fire extinguisher. And you’re right about the receipt, I always put a piece of thin rubber over top of the battery. Really great points that you bring up! Thank you so much for being here.

    Love this video. Really demystified the whole charcoal canister situation for me and my 74 super. Could you share what type of caps you used on the hose barbs? I am guessing they need to be something rate for gasoline but am having a hard time figuring out what to get. Also why route the vent line all the way over to the drivers side instead of the passengers side which is much closer?

    Great video! I am in the process of restoring my 1972 Marathon Baja Super Beetle and just taking out the tank to clean it and reinstall it. I was wondering what those smaller extra hoses coming out of the tank and now I know. I think I will remove the charcoal filter and plug the nipples when I reinstall the tank. I am doing a complete repaint because one of the other owners had painted it RED and it should be the Marathon Blue. I will have to take out the full interior and all the glass and do it right since they did paint the interior too. So this is a long project for me. BTW I have had the car since 1989 and used it for a daily driver for a few years but now is the time to get it back as close to original as possible.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the channel! Also thats awesome that you have owned it for so long and used it as a daily! The proper way is the canister, but I did away with it. Make sure to have some type of vent though, so it can vent properly. Please keep in mind the only issue, with not having it set up like factory, you may have a slight odor in your garage, since its venting into the air. Thanks for being here!!

    thanks for your videos, makes me want to start back into my restore of my wife's 71 super beetle convertible. Things remaining, install fuel tank, re-wire completed chassis, finish interior carpeting. Couple questions, if the car has been sitting for about 8 years (in garage) would you just recommend running fresh fuel line from the front to the engine compartment, and would you run that in the interior under the carpet? I have the/an external rear charcoal box, how can you tell if it's actually good to put back into use? thanks -steve

  • @michaeld.3779

    The expansion chamber, hoses, and charcoal canister keeps the gas fumes from venting to the atmosphere. Eliminating it will allow fumes into your garage from the hose you vented to the atmosphere.

I wanted to ask ,if i dont have the charcol canister is there even a point in using that plastic tube behind the fresh air box?

  • @BryanJohnson-kv7dg
    @BryanJohnson-kv7dg 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I rebuilt my EVAP system exactly as done in this video. If I followed along correctly, the only vent is the long hose that goes from left side, over the top of tank and down below tank at front of car, assuming a vented gas cap is not used. Is that enough of a vent for proper gas flow with only that long hose 'open'? Or, is a vented cap necessary to provide extra air? In which case, I have not found a vented gas cap that fits the original tank on a 73 super beetle.

  • @rjgarciasr

I'm not sure what should hook up where after eliminating the canister. Also, there is a very tiny hose from the charcoal canister that goes under the running board back to the front of the car. Not sure what to do with it either.

    Hi thanks for sharing this although I wish I had seen it before I installed my tank last week, as I didn’t put the strip around the tank. Also I was confused by the amount of events that were on my new tank, which you explained by blocking off, but what I am not sure about is the vent on the T, that you did away with the pipe surely it has to vent somewhere?
    The other thing is I received a nipple kit, but don’t know where that supposed to go

      Hi Pam...Actually I vented it to atmosphere, like they were doing before they installed the canister from the factory.
      It comes down underneath the car in the front.
      Make sure to have proper venting, or the tank will expand, and go 💥
      I did a video on fuel filter relocation. I don’t like them in the engine compartment. They sell a special custom bracket for it. I’m actually doing another film on it, in a couple of weeks. Please stay tuned.

      @@dboiR1 Oh okay. Here’s the German, 5.5mm braided fuel hose for the engine area. Always check the hoses once in a while due to the ethanol unfortunately

      @SladesVWBeetle thankyou..we have inherited a 73 super beetle my father started and are trying to solve a very leaking fuel system with absolutely no bug knowledge.. We really appreciated your video about the fuel tank and line repair.. Very helpful.. and way easier than anticipated..

    Just wondering if you had any problems with your fuel gauge after installing your fuel sender? There are baffles inside the tank if you over tighten the fuel sender the floats inside the tank might get stuck rubbing against the baffles.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Darren, no I really didn’t run into any issues at all. The fuel gauge worked perfectly well.

      Sounds good.I am doing my fuel tank on my 73 super beetle for fuel smell in the cab.I got that kit from Wolfsburg for the hoses .Also replacing leaking fuel hose that connects from the bottom of the tank to the fuel line tunnel. I'm going to also replace the fuel sender unit.Been watching your video on your gas tank replacement.Going to get rid of all those vapor hoses like you did.I was just wondering how many vapor outlets did you plug and how many did you use?Thanks Darren.

    Where can I find this fuel hose?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I get a lot of my factory style fuel hoses that go to the neck from Wolfsburg West. Otherwise, for the fuel lines at the back of the car, the braided lines, and the engine compartment I get from eBay.

      @@beardedg500 actually, when I buy the fuel hose, I go on eBay.
      And I punch in 5.5 MM braided German fuel hose.
      There’s a couple of people on there you will see that carries it. Make sure to please use hose clamps!

      @@beardedg500 you definitely have some leaks going on with your hoses. So you’re smelling fumes. I did bring you up and my one video about the oil bath, you must’ve missed it. And gave you a shout out and showed your post.

    Cloth covered hose is pure junk.
    It could be damaged from the store.. and you never know.
    Gear claps ... are not made for fuel lines.
    The correct clamps a called fuel injection hose clamps.
    Gear-clamps just cut your hose.

      Congrats on your 1972, wish I could actually see it. I always try to vision what others are doing. I have pretty thick skin brother, no problem at all. They’ve been doing that my whole life, although it can be frustrating, it’s something I’ve had to except. Thanks for being here I truly appreciate that a lot. If I can be of any help let me know. Have a great evening.
