One of my favorite tracks in the album honestly, stands out so much, and is literally a perfect fit for it. The lyrics, the emotion, and back story is literally a masterpiece on the album like a majority of the others. What a track! All the best Genesis, a never ending legacy! 👑💙

This alum is overshadowed by the two near perfect records that precede it. It’s almost on par with Abacab and Duke

What’s the back story? I mean the lyrics are pretty self explanatory but was there a specific situation that inspired this song?
after this great album i never understood the reason to do calling all stations without Collins, this was a meaningful and well put album that closed their legacy nicely
Tony and Mike weren't ready to shut down their machine or "close their legacy" yet.
Phil wanted to move on to other projects. He was tired of being the face of a thing that wasn't fully _his._ Somehow he was surprised/hurt that the band chose to continue without him.
Genesis could have kept going with Ray, but Mike underestimated how much work it would take to basically start over again (re-configuring the songwriting process, winning over the fans).
Since it was basically a new band, maybe they should've called it something else, to preserve that legacy. But a lot of older fans already said that about the 1980's version of Genesis.
Even this very song is an example of Phil playing a part he didn't enjoy anymore. Phil wrote "Tell Me Why," and Mike basically responded "it's just the Way of the World, and that's how it's meant to be."
I like Calling All Stations. It doesn't have the same "roundness" as We Can't Dance, but how could it - it was almost a new band, and one that deserved to develop.

Have you ever listen to _A trick of the tail_ or _Wind and wuthering_ ? Both from 1976. They´re both here on YT. I *strongly* recommend you to do that. You´ll find out that the Band didn´t get its rightful place in history, I´m afraid.
@@Vaninasanta I've listened to every single album of Genesis. They are one of my favorite bands of all time.
Of course i prefer their 1970's phase. Especially when Peter Gabriel was still a member of the group. Some incredible experimentation took place in those early years. I loved it
Relax, it has and will continue to get its rightful place in history. Time is on our side.
"Jesus He Knows Me" is one of their best songs, and I feel most people recognize this.
Most of it comes down to tastes in music for the older fans that only like the Gabriel era for the most part I believe and then more prog type of music in the first place. The other bits I believe also stem from not liking Phil for leaving Genesis to purely do his solo stuff since he became big then. The sound of them shifting from art rock/prog to pop more commercial sounding pieces go along with that but it was a natural evolution if you ask me and a group decision. Sure solo influences from Phil Mike and Tony probably crept there way in on this album and Invisible Touch too but I believe it sorta is inevitable in a way too eventually. I prefer the previous two albums over this one track wise and sound wise but it’s not a bad album for Phil’s last.
This is yet another of my favorite album tracks by this band, I think it should have been a single instead of "Hold On My Heart".
I bought the narrative that Genesis had sold out to "POP" so I completely ignored this album. Giving it the full listen for the first time in 2024 and I've got to admit- it has a really great sound! A little Brighter than Duke, and not as Proggy as SEBTP, but now I wish I had bought the CD. I would have enjoyed this on long drives! Phil sounds great, and Mike and Tony still prove that they can do no wrong.
I fell into the same trap! Always disregarded this album but now I’m hooked! Still trying to get into Calling All Stations lol
You can still buy the CD lol. Don’t believe everything you hear either. Sure they are pop more or less compared to their earlier stuff but it’s good stuff I’d say

Underrated. You forget how many tracks on Dance had little instrumental bits and a great groove. Living Forever also comes to mind.
