  • I thought that I had these two Hoyas figured out, but now I'm not so sure!

    Doppelgängers! Even Hoyas have them! Both are beautiful. I’m a fan of larger leaves.

      They are pretty much doppelgängers; I am kind of partial to the larger leaved one too!

      Thank you so much Lynda! These are the days of the winter blahs for sure; after a few above normal days temperature wise, we are right back into the cold and ice here. I'm so looking forward to spring!

    From what I understand, the taxonomy of these two currently separately published species are very much not worked out. The number of blooms can differ in cultivation from locality as well. I believe we can expect some clarification in the near future 🤞.

      Thank you for the information Rachel as it has been very confusing to me! Except for the size of the leaves these plants might as well be the same. I'm wondering if it was a mistake to publish the species Hoya evelinae since H. apoda was published way back in 1912, and appears on the surface to be virtually identical.

    Thanks, Doug. Wondering if this might just be a case of "seedling variation" as seen in other plants ( including a favorite annual of mine, Matthiola incana).
    Do you fertilize at every watering, when using coconut husk?

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am really thinking that you're correct that this is just a seedling variation. It is very hard to tell what the heck you are going to receive when you order plants out of Indonesia; I guess that is part of the fun. Yes, I do fertilize with every watering using coconut husk.

    Doug, I always wonder how you go about repotting monsters like this. Is it easiest just to set it in a bigger net pot with a bigger trellis and let the vines start to grow around the new trellis without disturbing any of the original setup?

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually do just as you describe; I try to remove the original pot and set the entire thing into a larger clear net pot. I try to disturb it as little as possible by leaving the original trellis alone, and try to get a larger trellis installed around the smaller original trellis. It takes a little bit of thinking at first, but I have it pretty much down to a science now.

      Thank you. Maybe a future video of you repotting this Hoya then to help us along?😊

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

      @@redfly2012 Rather than fooling around with potting this Hoya up, I chopped it all up and put most of the rooted cuttings up for sale. I will have a video up soon of Hoya versteegii, and you will see an example of potting up a plant and leaving the original trellis in place, and adding a larger one on.

    I always love a simple single bloom. They're a fresh sight!
    Have you ever grown Hoya Pulchra? I've been trying to find one and wondered if you had any experience with it.

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you CV! I have not grown Hoya pulchra, but I would also love to get my hands on one. They are currently fetching a price that is a little bit too steep for my blood. I will wait until the price is under $100 before giving it a try.
