My mom knew a guy whose dad raised goats. The guy has a motorcycle. He put a ton of money and time into maintaining this motorcycle, and he loved it. One day, he comes home and it's covered in poop, and the seat is torn to shreds. The goats trashed his motorcycle.

When I was in art school we had to fill sketch books. We were expected to draw every day. While sketching goats at a petting zoo they grabbed my almost full book and destroyed it. They wouldn’t even give me the pieces. My teacher tried not to laugh when I told him a goat ate my book. I love them still.

I can relate. My family use to raise goats and we showed them in 4 H. One day I lost my homework on the way to the bus stop. The goat ate. Teacher did not believe me. But my classmates knew about my goats and backed me up. Fun times.

As a kid I visited and lived on a few farms, enough to understand that some animals get slaughtered. When you're young and it's business you learn to accept it, but as you grow older and begin to understand life, the concept becomes impossible. I could 'snuff' a few people and not be bothered. People who have overstepped their usefulness. But innocent animals are off limits, to the extent that nature allows, when invoking natural selection. Even that is harder to understand now that I actually think about it, and don't just repeat the lessons of others.

    • @naomimay82

I don’t eat meat either. When I was a kid, we raised animals and slaughtered them. I just can’t do it anymore! I was fine with meat until age 36! I am not sure what changed then, but something just clicked and I couldn’t bear the idea of an animal suffering and dying so I could eat, when it is so easy to become vegan. I am healthier now because of it.

@@naomimay82 some people can become vegetarian, and some cannot. I am A practicing Buddhist who was a vegetarian for nearly 10 years. When I was 34, I started declining and I could not figure out why. I did everything I was supposed to, and went to a number of nutritionists.
In the and, a naturopath asked me to try eating red meat for awhile to see if that solved my health issues. It did.
I had to come to terms with the fact that I could not be healthy without red meat. I spent years looking into this, only to discover that most food recommendations made by various organizations are politically or financially motivated.
Now, I am determined to easy humanely produced meat, and am working on a plan to produce my own eggs, milk and meat while caring for the animals very well.

a goat was given to me a few years ago, an old ornery hard headed billy. I put him in two acres of overgrown property. He did a wonderful job of eating the weeds, briars, honeysuckles etc. He was entertaining, comical and first cousin to Houdini. He had a knack for escaping. No matter the weather he wanted to be in the scrub on my two acres. He was happy down in that overgrown area. A sleet and freezing rain storm rolled in so I went down got the goat and brought him to the barn and put him in a stall. Next morning I went to check on the goat and he was not there but he had butted 3 boards off the side of the barn and he was outside covered in sleet and ice eating honeysuckles. His head was harder than concrete and he loved to be smacked with a broom or board. He would back up, then raise up on hind legs and come forward then drop down and run to be smacked, over and over. Numerous times he snuck up behind and head butted me in the rear end. I also had 3 dogs and he loved to play with those dogs. That old goat was quite the character.

My boss had goats at the shop where I worked (small farm). I paid attention to one in particular as they ran the property unfenced. This one, in particular, recognized my truck when I pulled onto the property as she would run to me or call out to me if she was fenced. I always made it a point to give her some attention at these times. Wish I could have a pair in the city where I live.

We started with meat chickens then got small dual-purpose cattle (primarily for meat). We added egg layers, got more serious about our primary cattle being for milk while they give us the calves as future freezer-fillers. Goats for milk and pigs for meat and garden tillers are next on our list. We already have an LGD and can't wait to get him a female in the next year or two.

So true Bumble Bee!! But I'm thinking Bear was probably fussin over the same thing my dogs have been fussin about in a similar way to how he was doing...and it allows me to go "SQUIRREL!!!!!!" LOL!!! My dog Echo kinda makes a run like that and with her head looking up mostly at the trees!!! Squirrel!!!!
Every morning and evening they go bounding through the trees behind me plus along the cable line that runs down the side of the property and she sees em coming from the from of our 4 city lots and will run round the house knowing they'll come down that line! It's almost runny if I wasn't worried about the squirrels dropping down into the yard and her trying to get the trespassers!!!!

Goats are super easy once you get to know them!
As far as fencing? I will choose a six foot iron fence with concrete foundation! These babies destroyed my fence so Iron is a better choice for me ! I will put solid iron poles as well! You should just see my laughable fence now!

@@yeagsntoastable I agree with Erin tubb below about the breeds of goats suggested but specifically if you just want a friendly goat to clear scrub I would suggest a pair of castrated males (weathers), no estrous cycle to deal with and no spraying urine everywhere. Also, I love the idea of homesteading and being self sufficient while caring for living things. I just came across your channel and look forward to watching more. Hopefully I can convince my Daniel, I have one too 😅, that the homesteading life is the place we wanna be ! Thanks again and best wishes and good health to you and your lovely family. 💕😎

I've had jerseys and nubians. You open the and jerseys know where to go and they even go in order. They get in their stalls, they chew while you milk. When u get done u pull the pin swing the gate they go to pasture. With goats it's a mob, every day it's as if they've never been milked before. Goats all fight to be first. Great cheese but I sold every one.
