It's crazy to hear how much he detached himself from the culture... I looked up to guys like him growing up and in that era we never got to really hear the skaters voice, we'd catch a puff piece in a skate mag once in a while but it was rare if anyone ever asked a serious or meaningful question, so every time a new Heath video pops up it's like finding a rare gem. Thanks for tracking him down and putting this little piece together!
I think the point he's making is that he didn't detach himself from the culture. The culture of skateboarding that he loved, and that I loved, it totally dead. Skate parts and videos are all free to watch now, and you don't have to wait long periods of time to get more content, so it kind of loses its value. On the other hand, there is some super amazing stuff being done today, if he would just watch some of it he would definitely be amazed.
Nicely said. I remember reading a Top 5 list in a Thrasher Jerry Hsu interview. Number one was 'Tight, hairy pussy'. I was a conservative Catholic kid at the time but couldn't stop laughing. Miss flicking through those pages.
His videoparts were always top notch. From the trick selection, his style, his clothes, the music, the companies he rode for. It was all top notch. His parts had a certain type of vibe.
the music you have cities in dust in that hookups video. Right down to mindfield...his parts were always a higher notch from the clips/editing to the music
Idk why but Heath's parts always struck a chord emotionally. Music and night skating. And when i skated i was trying to be Heath too. Now its like a sad nostalgia looking back.. life didnt go as planned. Wish i could still skate
Heath is my absolute favorite skateboarder who has ever walked this earth! The way he sees and executed his vision on skateboarding has always awed me. Thank you for posting this!!
Hit the nail on the head. Most parts nowadays are forgot about after a week. I rather watch a well put together part then a part that took a couple months to film.
Heck yeah! Heath has a unique style. Got hooked on his part in The End, him and Klein had the best part!! And This Is Skateboarding, he had the intro part and still blows my kind after all these years. Him, Klein, Thomas, Muska, Reynolds, are legends...too many to name. Wish I could meet this guy and get my copy of The End signed
Seriously one of the goats to hear him talk I grew up watching this guy skating I started skating in the summer of 96 and I still skate to this day. and to hear how he detached from the culture today. things today withsocial media and everything is so much easier for skaters not saying that they don't put in hard work and time and dedication because they're dope. But how he said that back then OMG! Skateboarding the skaters back in the 90s and early 2000s made a career off just a video part back in the day and he's not lying I've seen so many skate videos back in the days straight Nostalgia is like going back and looking at old videos it just brings a Warmness to my heart because I understand where he's coming from this is one of the best interviews I've ever seen of him.
thanks heath, i grew up around one of your friends, kynan, man im like 22 years in, and just recovering from some knee whatever. its nice to see this. I really grew up around humble dudes like you, and man, skating is just an obsession, do other shit, its freeing. Lots of dudes need this.
This is sick!!! This is rad in the aspect and insight. Thanks! Oh ish defo I forgot .. ..mad love Heath Kirchart! Im still watching your clips figuring how to skate handrails. Also in the end the van scene🤙
Heath is a very down to earth dude ... I ran into him once when I was a kid. My buddy and I were skating this underground parking garage in Del Mar. He drove in with Ronnie Creagar. After they skated around with us for a bit , they popped the trunk of their car and gave us two blank decks. What an impact that left on us ... Six years later , while hanging out at Brian Young’s house , Heath shows up. He was still the same humble dude ..
"Skaters built their career off of their video parts...competitions didn't really matter."...paraphrasing what he said but THIS is why skating isn't what it was when I was growing up. Nowadays there are damn training facilities that dude's practice at non-stop before an SLS comp...they have SLS training facilities built at their HOMES lol. I remember when Dyrdek started building the skate plazas and we were all hyped...then he announced that he would be bringing in SLS and we all HATED IT because we already had the X Games and Tampa Pro/Am...we knew that SLS would turn skating into a different kind of thing, something that it wasn't meant to be. Everytime I see a skater wearing a Monster/Redbull hat it make's me cringe...big corporations like that stomping out the little skater owned companies make's me sick. Nike, Converse, Adidas, New Balance...I own a pair of O'Neil SB's just because I'll support Shane but alot of these companies KILLED the SKATER OWNED companies. Watching some of these skaters these day's they look like they are a walking billboard like Nascar jumpsuits. This is why I stick to brands like Baker, Emerica, Bones, and Venture...brands I grew up skating.
My favorite skater of all time. I always had a heath kirchart birhouse deck and then went to alien workshop. Lol i remember when birdhouse the end came out and CCS had heath kirchart on the cover skating the blockbuster sign.
Always used to say that Kirchart was cursed with the ability to skate. The guy was like an enigma! hlHe almost drowned off Southern California in a tiny boat.
Im here right after watching the BeagleTapes of him filming Beagle. Here it shows him holding an HD camera, and Im likee "i hope they know what theyre in for!" LOL
I agree with pretty much everything he says. Been filming for a video for the last few years and had always planned to do 2 versions of the video; one with skaters choice for song, and another where I (the filmer/editor) choose the songs (this one would be like an alternate edit). Doing this because 1/2 the people want to pick their song, and the other 1/2 don’t. But felt it was a good “meet in the middle” type deal
Thor let me have a mixtape of all these skate vids on vhs when I was a kid in 96, one of them was tentacles of destruction I watched that video so many times was my favorite on the tape, there was also a scsvm Santa Cruz video kinda makin fun of 411 and a think video with Phil shao and wade speyer and it was in black and white and they were shooting guns at a firing range. healths part in tentacles was my favorite tho with Josh beagle the song rules too winners blues by sonic youth
Dinger Magna billy marks is so gross. maybe the worst style ever. if you want a good double flip, see Kerry getz in mosaic or even heath himself in mind field.
Great skater Just seems like he dislikes were skating has gone ? Highly doubt he will ever be on nine club . Doesn’t even look excited for this interview didn’t even look excited when the homie said thanks for filming .
@@thomasrainbow And that's okay. There are plenty of flippety variations to be a fan of or not. That's just one of the many reasons skating is way better than, say... baseball.
Okay. Okay. Hold the fuck up... I can't believe after 30 plus years in this shit I just witnessed the first (maybe second) varial flip that wasn't doo doo. Gianni Vianna does one in the Primitive video off a ledge and over a railing that looks pretty dope. Wow. I'm stunned. It almost looks like an inward heelflip but I think that's the frame rate fritzing out. Shit is bangin' either way. I stand corrected. But that's two out of thousands I have seen.
Heath's Sight Unseen part is probably my favorite video part of all time.
That back noseblunt...

The great Heath Kirchart. Thanks for the inspiration in the 90s and 20s.
The film stock looks great, and the editing is reminding me of great cinema.

I happy he said Pat Duffy's part in Questionable
Heath is my top 3 all time. Heath, Reynolds, and Jamie Thomas.
Heath was special though because he skated 100 miles an hour and went big.
