If seeking a Manta-Ray experience in the future, you might have better luck with a night snorkel! My daughter and I did one in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, it was amazing! The agency setup a lighting system in the water with piping for snorkelers to hold on to. The lights attract krill, and the krill attract the Mantas! Mantas swim right under the lights inches from the snorkelers! Sounds scary, I know, they’re HUGE creatures! But it helps to recognize that Manta-Ray have no teeth or stingers and they’re incredibly gentle 🥰 For those that have the experience they offered the option of diving under the lights to be right in the middle of it all. 👍🏼 I hope it works out for you in the future!

You guys are amazing and the best Malihini's EVER . It is rare to see such intuitive appreciation of Hawaiian culture, and the language, and as I said before, I love that you've been to both of my hometowns and pay them such incredible respect- Monterey and Lahaina.!!
My next statement is very very important. I SOLD activities and my best friends were captains on boats that "went to" Molokini. The FACT is that not only do you not normally see manta rays, you VERY SELDOM EVEN GET TO MOLOKINI, because of the tides out of a possible and I'm not exaggerating 100 sails to Molokini, have been there two or three times, most days you end up going to an "alternate snorkel site." Molokini has sharks, I've never seen a manta ray there in fact I've rarely seen a manta ray in Hawaii, except at night when they are plentiful. I used to go watch my friends surf off the Lahaina harbor and the manta ray wings would look like shark fins and I would be terrified, , until I recognized what they were, I've seen a few in the daytime, but hardly ever and I literally grew up ( off and on) in Hawaii from age 1 to 35 off and on multiple trips after I moved back to California, when I would always try to get out on the water for a sail. I no longer even lived there when I finally got to a Full blown Molokini snorkel on a clear water day, and again -many of my Maui friends were captains, my roommate was a captain, and we always ended up at alternate snorkel sites, when I say you were lucky to even get to Molokini, I mean it. It was absolutely false advertising to promote seeing manta rays I think it's false advertising to say you're going to Molokini at ALL, because it actually seldom happens.
You two are the best, and I absolutely love the Aloha you showed my Island, you seem to have an intuitive understanding of what my island is all about, I just love you for it ❤️!! ❤️🤙

    • @kgawlik
      @kgawlik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is so interesting to know! I did make it out on a snorkel tour to Molokini and saw a Manta Ray there. It feels even more special now that I know how rare it is to get to make it out there. The water was ROUGH though and I got really sea sick

    • @mercedesrodriguez9991
      @mercedesrodriguez9991 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kgawlik What I'm learning is that early morning sails almost always make it, Hawaii is SO expensive, I worked 2-3 jobs, on days off I generally slept in and went midday...those, apparently , are less likely to make it..
But since my sails were all comped , afternoons were easier to grab, too.!
There are plenty of manta rays in Hawaii, I personally have seen more at night than in the daytime.. I had no desire to get super close.
Don't worry , Tim and Fin it WILL happen!!

I have done pretty much everything they did in 2019 on Maui. To tell you the truth some of Maui the North West side is like Vegas a fake paradise with very high cost that takes away from the fun. The center of Maui is very average not even for tourist but the living area for all the blue collar workers. The road to Hana is awesome but when you get there the food options a very very limited. I packed a car load of food and rented a Cabin. 3 days I see why Mama Fish House is expensive but the prices are very high. I had to get more food to eat 3 hours later in the center of Maui. I am not a all you can eat person. I would only recommend Maui to USA citizens not willing to travel all the way over to Asia. Maui has stunning areas but with flying easy to most areas of the world I would save my money for someplace else

You’re 100% justified in feeling how you did about your Manta Dive.
You can have the same quality of dive for much cheaper and easier just renting the gear and diving the first three beach sites you went to.
Mala Pier (the boat harbour) being the best. Especially for turtles.
Kanapali Beach (right at the public spot) is where I have only ever seen 1 Manta Ray and have never seen one since. Great reef to dive there.
    Lastly the cliff jumping spot.
Dive around the cliff and it is amazing for wall reef and fish; turtles too. Would even recommend snorkelling around that entire cliff (except the jumping zone ofc)!
Much better diving for much cheaper.
Easier to rent the gear and just walk in off the beach.
I’ve had too many bad experiences boat diving however beach diving has never done me wrong.
    Thanks for the great video!

Loved the video, we are going to Maui in a few weeks so I was very happy to stumble upon your channel. Complete side note, it is actually pretty normal for Jeep people to park next to each other, kind of part of the jeep 'culture', which is probably why they parked next to you with an empty parking lot.

I'm halfway through your 2 bour tour. I've been going to Maui since the 1980s and there's always something new to discover. I hope that next time you visit Maui or any other Hawaiian Island, you will partake in a luau.Luau. The Luau is an ancient Hawaiian ritual and is meant to bring the people of a village or town together in celebration of an important event or achievement or to celebrate the victory of a battle. The Luau is really a very much a part of the Hawaiian culture where specific types of food are cooked and eaten. If you go to a Polynesian type Luau, you will eat food and see dances from 4 specific Polynesian cultures: Hawaii, New Zealand (Maori), Tahiti and Samoa. This type of "touristy" Luau will include fire and knife performance. A Hawaiian Luau will feature strictly Hawaiian food and go through the history of Hawaii. Both are wonderful and much about the Hawaiian and Polynesian culture can be learned from attending them. You will also get authentically prepared food.

I watched this video last week (your 2 hours ones are great and it takes me a couple of sessions to watch them all the way through). I wanted to come back and address something you said about wanting to honor the Hawaiian people and their culture. You mused that you weren't exactly sure how to do that, but wanted to acknowledge both, but in a respectful way. You mentioned that one of the ways you chose was to not go to any commercialized, 'touristy' things, ie: luaus. I have to tell you, I totally understand where you are coming from, but I have one comment to make. My husband and I met, and married, in Hawaii 46 years ago. He was in the USAF. When he left the military and we returned to the mainland, it was 30 years (with kids, jobs and all that entails) before we could return to the islands. Since then, we were shocked by how things had changed. On one of our subsequent trips (we've been back many times in the past 16 years), we decided to search out an authentic luau. We found it on the island of Oahu. It is a (intentionally) small, family run and totally an immersion experience. Of all the luaus we have attended over the years, THIS one gives you the true feeling of Hawaii and Polynesia. No Hollywood show here!! If you ever back back to the islands, please go to Toa Luau, www.toaluau.com
Love your channel, and the opportunity to travel the world with you. You are a delightful couple!

I grew up back and forth between Monterey and Maui I was what they call a summer kid visiting my cousins in Hawaii and then I moved there as an adult for a very long part of my adult life I love Maui so much, it is my soul's home.. I wish I'd known I know some very Exquisite secret places I'm watching now so jealous I haven't been there for 7 years which is the longest I've been away since I was like 11....
I'll see if you found the Red Sand Beach I think I stayed at the condo you're staying at when I was there the last time.... Kaanapali and Kapalua are all still Lahaina, they're just little coves.. it is so funny because I have friends that own those whale watching boats, and I tried to get some of my old schoolmates to go out whale watching with me after your video in Monterey, and they're like 'I'm afraid' of both or "I get seasick" but I'm going to do that next winter, I don't care if I have to go myself.

I am so looking forward to this trip! Greetings from Nuremberg/Germany and again THANK YOU for sharing your travels with us.

LOVED this guide. Headed to Maui for the first time in March of 24'. Bucket list is whale watching (using the company you did), The sunrise viewing and the road to Hana. Learned so much from this guide. Very excited to have a better idea on how to plan! Thanks!!

I lived in maui for three years really enjoyed watching your experience there, My wife and I go back to the Islands every year, we love all of them ( This year will be our 28th trip) . In all my time in maui I never saw manta rays either. If you truly want to see them go to the big Island. You can actually see them from the shore line at night at the outrigger hotel (former Sheraton) They are about a hundred yards from the rail. They also have night time dives where you can be in the water with them. New to your channel and love it so far will be watching it from now on! Thank You for the enjoyable content!

This is about the closest I will be to anywhere to going Hawaii ...I have been binge watching your channel these past two days and have to say the REAL travels no sugar coating just went through New Zealand with you and realized BUG SRAY should be top of the list and a desire for dreary rainy days 😩 not necessarily on the top of my list...also been to a few of your Greek Isles now that has always been on my bucket list ...thanks so much for sharing the realities of travel life... a bit of Mexico ....Maybe one day ....stay safe and blessed ,,,unless they remove the shot mandates this girl will continue being a simple country girl and enjoying what ever nature I can find close by

Totally living vicariously through all your videos during this pandemic. My 6 year old looooooves Maui and while we’re not comfortable flying with young ones right now, I’m so happy I still get to experience it through y’all. And really with a 6 and 2 year old who gets carsick, we ain’t doing any dives or road to Hana, even without a pandemic 😅.

My favorite island. Just the range of things to do. Top 3 beaches on the planet are on this island. I will not name them 😂. Off shore snorkeling is insane and plentiful. Man…love it.

And last comment - we did the sunrise gig up the mountain too but got their early enough for the ceremony where they chant in hawaian welcoming the sun. It had also snowed the night before so we got to make a little snowman. We really enjoyed your video and are about to go back to get more Whale shots! (PS Aunt Sandy's just off the road to Hana many feel is the best banana bread on the island. We spent the night in Hana so stopped at Sandy's on the way..... it was awesome!) We grabbing a few loaves in a few weeks on our first day then going to check out the Eden Arboretum -which we missed last time. We enjoyed your segment on that too :)
Now if I can convince the other half about the Molokai helecopter ride!
Got to order the collapseble daypack too - that looks sweet!

Loved the video, we visited Hawaii on our honeymoon back in 2018. We didn’t visit Maui but we are hoping to visit Hawaii again and will definitely be going after watching your vlog. With regards to manta dives you could do this at one of the hotels we stopped at in Kona on the big island they were also viewable from the restaurant.

Maui, known also as “The Valley Isle,” is the second largest Hawaiian island. The island beloved for its world-famous beaches, the sacred Iao Valley, views of migrating humpback whales (during winter months), farm-to-table cuisine and the magnificent sunrise and sunset from Haleakala.

Thank you for all the great tips. I found your videos a couple weeks before my family's trip to Maui when I was deep into researching all the activities we wanted to do, your channel was super helpful. We just got back a few days ago and wanted to let you know that on our snorkel tour with Calypso we saw a manta ray in Turtle Town along with a couple turtles. Sorry you didn't get to see Manta Rays on your trip. Our captain did say that was a rare thing to happen, another rare thing was whales were still there a week after whale season was over. We had two sets of mama and baby whales during the same snorkel tour. We've done that same tour on our honeymoon just to see turtles 2 years ago and no turtles then. So glad we got to see so many wildlife this time around.
