John Muir Way: Balloch to Croy with a summit camp

  • My last two sections of the John Muir Way before completing the whole trail involved a 31 mile walk from Balloch to Croy with an overnight camp.
Searching for a good place to set up camp not too far away from a water source took me along a small path which headed uphill.
To my surprise I ended up on a popular small hill with a trig point…a perfect spot for my first summit camp. The only downside was a 45 minute walk down and back up again to collect water.
I was treated to a beautiful sunset and settled down for the night with the smell of smoke from wildfires in the air. I woke up during the night to the smell being replaced by whisky being made from nearby Dumgoyne Distillery.
    Another memorable trip. 😊

Well done on finishing the J.M.Way. I did this section in 2017 with 2 pals. The route has changed since then. In 2017 it was mainly road walking to Croftamie and then joined the West Highland Way to Strathblane. I always meant to go back and do the new way but I'm too old now and one of the pals I did it with has passed away so it wouldn't be the same without him.
On another theme, met a friend today who is just back from 3 weeks on the South West Coastal path. His wee border terrier was bitten by an adder on the walk and had to be put on a drip. He [the dog] made it up and down Dumyat twice today so has made a full recovery. Dogs being bitten by adders is a very rare occurrence so no need to worry about Brora.

After seeing that dead adder or adder skin I kept her mostly on the lead. It’s far from the nearest road at points if she was bitten & I needed help. I hadn’t realised the route had changed, so glad some of the road walking had gone, nothing worse than tarmac! Thanks for watching. 👍

a great wee adventure, the long walk back for water really hurts, i've started taking my stove and just having a coffee while i get some legs back.

Thanks Robert, I didn’t visit The Whangie this time but have been a few times before. My first time up the hill though. Shame the smoke spoiled the views a bit. 👍
