Particleboard comes in either raw form with sanded surface OR with surface decorative overlay melamine, vinyl, or wood veneers. Common grades available: Standard, Moisture Resistant (MR) and Flooring. MR Particleboard has a much slower response to wetting than standard types.

Safety glasses (clear) at minimum. I'd personally use a pair of good safety gloves, hearing protection and dust mask as needed. If we're dealing with hazardous material, chemicals and gas emissions inhalation risks, then its a different ball game all together. Lord have mercy on these workers.
