How to Use a VIDEO or GIF to Customize Your Google Chrome Homepage

Convert your video to a GIF for uploading to Chrome at www.kapwing.com/studio
You can customize your Google Chrome homepage (the New Tab page) with not only images, but also GIFs and videos! Whether it’s a scene from your favorite movie, a great meme, or personal content, you can easily do it all. In this tutorial, we show you how to use a GIF to personalize the background for your Chrome homepage. If you want to use a video, simply convert it to a GIF for free using Kapwing first.
There are 6 steps. If you have already downloaded your GIF, skip to step 5.
1. Open Kapwing’s Studio www.kapwing.com/studio
2. Upload or link your video. Trim or add visual elements if desired.
3. Choose GIF output format in the settings (found under the Publish button)
4. Click Download
5. Find your downloaded GIF and change the extension to “.png”
6. Open a new Chrome tab, click “Customize” in the lower right corner, then upload your GIF!

For you Windows 10 users, you can change the file type by first going to Control Panel, then Appearance and Personalization, then File Explorer Options, on the view tab, uncheck the "Hide Extensions For Known File Types." Click OK, then refresh your explorer and the gif extension will show. You can then rename the file to anything you want with the PNG extension, and it works! Also there's a button in Kapwing to export your file without the watermark.

when you are downloading a file, it gives you an option to rename it. Rename it to whatever you want and then add a .png and save the file. Then you can choose it to be your backround in google

When renaming the file from .gif to .png it loses the gif properties and it becomes just a still image. How do i fix this?

A PNG is a single image file, so you can't keep the GIF properties and also change the file to a PNG. If you want to keep it a GIF and rename it, you should be able to rename the file, but type ".GIF" to keep the extension. Otherwise, it depends on your operating system. What type of computer are you using?

You should be able to define exactly what resolution your output file is using the "Custom Size" input boxes in Kapwing

How do you crop the video you want to turn into a gif?

You can do that in the Studio. Upload the video to the Studio, crop it, trim it down to the section that you want to convert to a GIF, then go to Settings > Output as GIF. We're going to eventually move our Conversion flow to the Studio to make this easier.

Right -- GIFs are smaller files than video files, so the duration can't be too long. If you make a GIF >30 seconds, it will be really grainy and low resolution.

This was so useful!
But here is an alternative way to make a GIF (an already existent one) your Chome Wallpaper:
1. Search up a GIF on Chrome
2. Save it under a recognisable name with the end .png
3. Upload it to Chrome using the 'Customise' button in the bottom right
Enjoy! (Although it undergoes a noticeable resolution reduction)
