I used to mix grape and orange kool-aid and it's by far the best kool-aid I've ever ever had. Looks like swamp water though.
We called mixing drinks in the fountain dispenser Swamp Water, I used to love doing that. Mostly had Sprite/IceTea (sweet tea).

My brain: i wonder if thats cause red an blue are opposite in wavelengths and so every other color is in between that in some way. So when you combine a bunch of them like that you get a combination of the more dominant combination of colors, red and blue for purple.
I can 100% guarantee thats not it. But thats the first thought my brain came up with
