      Well also the problem with maze for measuring intelligence, is that it is just memory, no problem solving. You put a single obstacle like a door opened by pulling rope, and the raccoons would be only ones to get thru. Also, ferrets are sort of evolved for the exact purpose of going thru burrows, which is not much different than a maze.

      @@bicks420 How about a door with a snack on the other side of it that they have to step on a switch to open, but it is too far away to get to after releasing the switch. Leave something heavy enough beside it to hold the switch down. Might have to demonstrate it first, but that would be fun to see if any, especially the racoons could figure it out.
      I think cats are very smart, but they are so independent thinking it is hard to tell what they are going to do if anything. They might decide to take a nap a well as anything.

    Depends how you measure intelligence...
    Some would say the ferrets were the most intelligent because they found their way out fastest. But they also like to run around tunnels and explore, and would be bound to come across the exit quickly regardless of if they were even looking for it.
    Some would say the cats are smartest of all because they refuse to even play the human's game and know they will be retrieved and fed eventually without any effort on their part.
    I personally think the raccoons were the cleverest, as they were the only ones who seemed to understand it was a puzzle with a food reward at the end and got increasingly faster times through learning.

    • @zmerk253
      @zmerk253 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I also think biologics have a play, ferrets rely on their scent way more. Like an eyeball basically, so once the first ferret made it through he breezed through it because he probably smelled his musk still in the path! Along with the raccoon and cats too beforehand he seemed to know where he wanted to go. Now racoons and cats have a really good smell but also amazing eyesight, so they take their time observing and using all of their senses differently because they think entirely different than each other like you said. Cats are pretty content where they are, they just wanted to chill or weren't in any hurry like you said. Racoons are very tactile and need to really instigate before making decisions, un like cats. Where ferrets have no fear and know their nose will point them to where fresh air and goodness is. I think it's not so much as intelligence, instead how they're all predisposed with different things and are used to doing that differently and if they had more of what the other had they would all be similar. They kind of go in a way of (cats) most careful most careless (ferrets)

      Ferrets and other weasels are adapted to persuing prey down into its burrows. It makes sense that they are good at remembering their way around, both to not get lost and to remember which tunnels they've already checked for prey when searching inside a big interconnected rabbit warren.
      Though now that you mention it, ferrets most definitely leave a scent trail. Even a human nose is capable of following it! Perhaps their odor has more purpose than warding off predators and intimidating competition?

    • @Goldengirl48
      @Goldengirl48 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Keldor314 A ferret's eyesight is very poor. They depend on sense to do many things including recognizing a trail set down to find it way around its burrow. They are used in England and some European countries as a way to flush rabbits out of their burrows.

      @Keldor314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @Phil Jermakian Having two ferrets of my own, I don't think I'd call them "smart" persay (although admittedly one of them is a lot more clever than the other.) They are sweet and friendly, though, and they love exploring new places. In fact, I think my ferrets are the only pets I've ever had who LOVE going to the vet because they get to explore the exam room when they're there!
      They're very focused, and will completely ignore anything not on their list of interests. Sherman in particular takes this to an extreme. For instance, when he first met the dog, he was much more interested in exploring the room that he usually doesn't get to be in, and so *completely ignored* the dog sniffing him. For context, the dog is a large dog, far larger even than a big ferret like Sherman, and they were at this point strangers. But nope! The dog was not on Sherman's list of interests, therefore as far as Sherman was concerned, didn't exist!
      He did this with the cat too. Cat thought he was interesting and was following him around poking at him from time to time. Sherman didn't care! He was going to explore, and if the cat happened to be in his way, he'd just walk through the cat, who would jump out of the way, and keep going!
      This seems to be a thing with mustelids in general. I seem to remember a video of a badger encountering a *mountain lion* in the wild. The mountain lion was curious and was investing the badger up close, and the badger, for the most part, didn't care one bit and continued doing what it was doing, sniffing around for food, although it did briefly lunge and snap at the mountain lion when it dared to touch it. The mountain lion clearly knew better than to mess with the badger, and the badger was well aware of this!

      I don’t think it’s them being aware it’s a race. It their deductive ability, memory, and problem solving. The raccoons and ferrets seem to be sharper in those categories. That one cat kept going to the same way until it just gave up. It passes a path it had not explored but didn’t even stop to consider if had been that way.

    I think the issue with the cats is their motivation is different/not there. Cats are so use to living with humans that they saw the entrance as a door and they are use to just waiting for their human to open the door. It didn’t occur to them to look for a second entrance/exit because they didn’t feel the need too. Maybe if they were in their long enough they would then bother to look but with a cat that could be awhile until you saw their real reaction to actually trying the maze.
    I think the best way to trick the cat is to make them unaware of the entrance. Perhaps if they started in a box that was covered and the box was set at the entrance, then they wouldn’t be aware that the entrance and wait at it like a door. However, as cats do, you might have to wait a while for them to explore as some cats might be freighted from traveling in the carrier but then see the carrier as a safe place as it is the only location they know. Perhaps seeing the maze already from above and recognizing the room through the plexiglass they would be more comfortable at exiting Vs staying inside the carrier.
