Crazy fact I forgot: at the time, Acura also offered this car with a Comptech supercharger kit and a bunch of speed parts. Fast? Sure. But it raised the MSRP by $16,000, bringing the total to over $50k. - ZK
The Comptech parts were aftermarket, but man were they awesome. I had a 2001 CL-S with some of their goodies. Also, look for one with the factory spoiler. Makes the car look 300% better.
I couldn't agree more. Not having to worry whether it will start, leave you stranded, or if that pesky check engine light will pop up is the ultimate form of luxury in my opinion. For that aspect alone, 1995 to 2005 Japanese-made cars are truly unbeatable.
There’s a reason, it’s the same situation with the 2nd gen TL Type S (same engine and power output).. they weren’t fun cars to drive and everyone I knew back in the day regretted buying them. Even a base model Integra from the 90’s put a bigger smile on people’s face while canyon carving. The TL S and CL Type S of that era was just the dentists car with a bit more ponies to overtake a slow big rig.
*Correction: On the day of filming, Acura told me the car was a 2002 but after following up with them today (June 16, 2021), they confirmed it is in fact a 2003. Good spot by the viewers! - ZK
2003's had darker tinted headlights...everyone knows that. I had one for 12 years before my BMW 2-series. I only buy rare cars. ;-). I put 108,000 miles on that 3.2CL no issues whatsoever
Thank you for posting this. The Acura CL Type-S is one of the rarest Honda/Acuras out there. The 6spd features an LSD which totally changes the driving experience.
I drove a manual CL Type-S when I worked for an Acura dealership a while back, only ever heard rumblings that a manual was available and then one day, one showed up! Stupidly clean car, I kept telling the owner “do you have any idea how rare this thing is?!”
Yeah they're super rare I think they only made about 2,000 manuals and of the 2000 they made about 800 with nav so if you get one of the models with nav they're super rare
One time, I went undercover for Acurazine to a local Mercedes dealer who had a black on black 6sp. Test drove, didn't buy it. I told the salesman, do you have any idea how rare this thing is? He pointed to a CL55 AMG and asked me if I knew how rare that was...oh
I had no idea it was such a rare car when I stumbled across a six speed with navigation and factory spoiler I have had it for five years put about 15k on it now 128k simple, super reliable just a super car. Everything you want with no extra garbage I am a dealer, so I don’t keep much but this one is a keeper. My research says they made 3500 of them 211 with navigation.
@@StingrayOfficial Assume it'll need the transmission replaced and you'll be in the car for $5-7k. You can run the VIN on Honda's recall site to see if it's had the transmission fixed, If so I'd say go for it.
I have an 00 Accord with a 03 CL Type-S 6 Speed swap. comptech headers, comptech icebox intake, comptech strut tower brace, comptech front and rear sway bars and bunch of other goodies.
I consider these the begining of the modern acura. This was an anonymous blob. Yes i think its cool now that its nearly 20 years old but i see why these flopped exterior was bland blob and the interior looked plasticky.
@@CRAPO2011 Yes, they have boring styling... buy 2003 Acura should have stepped up their game. Looks to similar to my friends Honda Accord V6. I'd much rather drive my unreliable Alfa. At least when it breaks down I get looks.
@@des9655 Im a honda fan but i have to call them out when they fail. 2003-2007 Accord coupe was a better looking car than the 2nd gen CL. HAHA I do like me a 1990s 164 Quadrofoglio in green(reliability wise id run and not look back)
The 6MT version of this car was amazing (I had one) - one of the best handling FWD car at the time. But the AT versions had very sketchy reliability (bad Honda). The AT didn't even come with LSD. If you can find a stock 6MT, I'd get one in a heartbeat.
I had a total basket case of a 2002 TL Type-S, and even with a variety of small issues, none of them added up. The car was still great to drive, made all the power all the noise, and had all the comfort (minus none functional AC). Definitely a car I want to revisit one day.
My 03 CL Type S 6 speed is by far my favorite car and favorite of the 6 Hondas I've owned over the years. 5th gen Prelude 5 speed manual in Crystal Blue Metallic was my first car and came in close 2nd. I recommend any Honda/Acura lover to buy one before the prices skyrocket. Only 3,511 were built with a manual and I'm getting maybe half are still on the road today, due to being wrecked or parted for swaps :(. Fun fact, if u can find a White 2003 CL Type S w/ 6 speed and ebony interior w/ navigation, only FIFTEEN were made!!
Great comments and info.i have a red 6 speed with ebony and 125k.found it in s.c. with rebuilt title. Got it for cheap and put new clutch.gas tank.and few other things.great car to go along with my 4th gen 6 speed ti
Wow, what a pleasant surprise to see a video on a 03' CL in 2021!!! This has always been my favorite car. I owned one in 2005 when I was in my early 20's, eventually sold it and got a 08' Infiniti G37, which was also a ton of fun. Then I got a practical daily driver when I was getting married, but about 5 years after being married I had the itch to grab another 03 CL Type S like I had before. Found one, grabbed it up, been storing it indoors in a temp controlled facility next to Ferrari's and Vettes, and periodically take it out and restore and hook it up little by little. I love this car and plan to keep it forever! FYI, the one kryptonite with these cars is the transmissions. If or when mine goes, I will probably drop in a AV6. Keeping this car forever!
I had a 2001 Acura cl typeS from 2007 to 2020 i also got a 2013 Infinite g37 last year and i miss the sound of the 3.2 vtec way better sounding engine then the Infinite, best sounding v6
Got an ‘03 CL Type S with 160,000 mi on it last year for $750 from this older woman who had no clue what she was giving up. It’s in pure condition and runs like a newborn wildcat. Love it!!!
3.2CL with comptech headers was my first car....my favorite thing to do was [light turns green] floor it, burns rubber, THEN burns rubber AGAIN going Into 2nd Gear! Scared all the suburbanites. Good times.
The reason I specifically passed on the CL Type-S is because, for once, Honda dropped the ball pretty hard and their automatic versions both were limited to 5 gears, didn't get the LSD, and were so unreliable that there was a class-action lawsuit that actually stuck. Which sucks because they've always seemed like a great cheap daily, but I guess they're better as odd weekend cars.
I love my 03 CLS 6 speed, especially with my Comptech supercharger, Comptech icebox intake, Comptech headers, Comptech test pipe, and Comptech catback! Took a while to get the parts but its an absolute monster and rare gem with all these parts.
Dang you've got all the comptech goodies. I've been trying to find a supercharger but I've only been able to find one and it was crazy expensive. Do you have any suggestions of where to look for one?
Shooot man!! Mine is stock @241k miles. Got a true dual exhaust system utilizing glasspacks and magnaflows that im about to have welded up. I completely forgot about the Comptech catback though, I wish I could find some more parts.
Thumbnail got me on this one. In 2003 I was ready to buy with the Acura CL Type S or a 330ci. I read a Car and Driver comparison at the time where Car and Driver called the 330ci "The finest sporting 2 door on the planet" I picked the 330ci with a manual. But always loved the Acura
Spot on review. I had the 2003 CL-S with automatic. The engine was fabulous and everything worked. The rest of it was as you described. I put a cutback exhaust on mine and the engine/power went up a small notch. Sold it after 9 years. I miss it, it's too bad they didn't continue to refine it. It had the potential to be a lot better than some of the European competition.
That's a really nice CL Zack. This is the second time I've heard the forward upshift complaint from Matt and yourself, but forward upshift & backwards downshift has been around for a very long time. Alot of Old aftermarket performance shifters like I had in one of my cars in the 80's had this same layout. It has a much better feel to me than backwards upshift and forward downshift. I currently own two cars, one in each of these different layouts.
Coming from a previous owner, I promise you that finding one with a transmission that has already been replaced does not mean it won't happen again. I had mine done twice under warranty from Acura. I finally got rid of the car when the trans started failing again and Acura would not cover the full cost on what would've been the 4th transmission in that car. With that said, its the only car I have ever owned that I miss. If it had been the manual I would still have it 15 years later.,
The key to the transmission was having it rebuilt with aftermarket parts.mine cane with 24mth unlimited miles and ran up until i sold it with zero problem
Should definitely not buy one with an auto. Those automatic transmissions don’t get enough oil to the second gear clutch packs and they pre maturely wear out. I had a 2003 TL A-spec, had the trans replaced once under Honda’s extended warranty on the trans and got rid of it before the replaced one destroyed itself. The manual trans CL would essentially last forever.
I have an 03 manual type S and that thing is a unicorn. LSD, 6 speed manual, 260 crank HP (mine has 273 to the wheels) and the thing just WORKS. Lowered on stiffer coilovers and drives as good as it gets for a FWD full sized coupe.
I enjoy my 03’ 6mt CL type s. It is by far my favorite vehicle I have ever owned. I have owned it for 5 years now and I enjoy that hard VTEC crack above 5k everyday!
I wish I could find a 6sp of one of these. They were such fun cars for what they were. High school for me was all about Acura Type-S cars (CL, TL, and RSX) and the Prelude Type-SH. I'd love to find one not totally ragged out.
I can't imagine how rare an '03 CL is today. I was shopping in 2007 and wanted a low mileage CL. I looked and couldn't find any after 2002 and every CL I found had more miles than I wanted. Ended up buying a base 2003 TL without Nav, then added a Pioneer AVIC head unit with nav, CD, and backup camera. I did have to replace the transmission but the extended warranty from Zurich paid for everything including rental car. Best car I've ever owned.
I sold these new back in 2002 (2003’s came out early, this is a 2003 in the video) after o graduated college decided to sell Acura’s. Everyone was so excited when the 6-spd manuals showed up..... and literally NO ONE bought them! Lots of test drives but when it came time to sell them crickets. I remember the clutch being surprisingly grabby from the take off otherwise was a nice car with very little torque steer and a great sounding VTEC V6. The biggest negative was that it was an absolute boring design back in the early 2000’s and now it just looks homely ..... there isn’t a single line on the car that is even slightly unique or stylish. At times I literally thought I was looking at a Thunderbird, Mazda MX6, or any other number of wallflower coupes
@@TheSmokingTire I've also been trying to put my finger on what I didn't like about the exterior design since when you look at the elements that a coupe has (general proportions, how the rear of the greenhouse meets the beltline, etc.) , it would seem that all these elements are there on the CL and because it's a clean shape, it should look like a classic sleek coupe. But I think there are several issues that might explain why it wasn't a sexy coupe in the way that the 2nd gen Acura Legend coupe was: 1) the ride height is too high. I know car manufacturers needed to balance practical ride height with sporty looks and handling and that it was always a compromise, but the CL does ride a little too high even for a stock vehicle IMO. 2) wheels could be larger and tires wider (undersized wheels and tires was always an issue with 80s, 90s and early 2000s cars), and 3) needs more aggressive lower bodywork (not too aggressive that it looks like it's got a cheap ricer body kit on it, but just a subtle yet deep front spoiler, more substantial side skirts, a tasteful rear lip spoiler or molded-in rearward extension of the rear trunk (instead of a traditional rear wing that it normally could be optioned with) and a slightly more aggressive rear valance. But especially that front spoiler to make the car appear lower. I think if those issues were addressed, I think the CL would be a handsome coupe (still not on par with the Legend, but it would be a good-looking coupe). I always wished that the J32 motor from this car could be swapped into the 2nd gen Acura Legend coupe. That car is classicly beautiful and sexy. Always thought the legend was one of Acura's greatest achievements. Kudos to Acura for offering the Legend with a 6 speed in 1993 (5 speed prior I believe). Unfortunately, because the Legend's engine is longitudinally mounted like a rwd car, the J32 motor will not work with the Legend (not without some serious re-engineering at least). Oh well, I guess you can always find a 6 speed Legend (hard to find one) and supercharge the motor (but these would be high-mileage motors by now and may have a much shorter life with the added pressure of a supercharger, and I'd rather have the VTEC kick at high revs). Too bad Acura didn't give you a 6 speed manual-equipped CL type S to review. I haven't owned one but from I've seen in owner video's, the motor pulls very strongly with the 6 speed. Surprisingly strong. alot more fun. Nice balanced review though and I'm a longtime big fan of the channel.
Enjoyed the vid - lifelong Acura owner here for all the reasons mentioned. Premium experience without the maintenance or proprietary dealer service requirements. Approaching 500k miles driven across a number of products: * 87 Legend V6 5MT (white, sold it with 225k with an undiagnosed OBD1 code for $1200) . ABS/Airbag and a V6 was SAFE for my first purchased car; it also had a MPG computer and a flip-up lever on the passenger seat you could reach from the drivers seat. Helpful - because coupe and dating in HS. The CL-S didn't have either (but exceeded else ware) * 91 Integra 5MT (black) dirt track car runner (Budd's Creek, MD where rubbin's racin'). 4cyl class - durable outside read-upper controls arms. Only the Integra GSRs were more powerful in class *03 CL-S (times) 2 Satin Silver - story below>> * 21 TLX APEC SH-AWD in Apex Blue (daily driver, with plans to trade in for a '23 Type-S...but different story)....10sp Auto, LOVE the SH-AWD...but have missed the 3 pedals ever since the INCIDENT>> Fast forward 27 years, I have just procured my second '03 CL-S, a CLEAN manumatic 5AT with 186k miles and a spoiler. My first was an '03 CL-S 6MT with 265k miles (one of ~3511, +/- a few if you read the forums) which was well on its way to a half million miles. Bulletproof transmission - had regularly towed a Coleman pop-up and HF utility trailer in style, with much better MPG than a truck! Welp, in 2021 I had dropped the subframe to replace the PS rack and install a new clutch - it was at that time a tornado came through southern New Jersey and flattened it like a pancake - 8' tree at the base came across the cabin. We were crushed! Both in Satin Silver grey and '03 model years, been looking for a while. New one parked at a Dollar General 30 min away, 100k less miles on the body, only shows one rust area (wheel wheels where the bumpers connect are prone to rot) and included delivery (take that CarVana!). Plan is to enjoy the 5AT for a bit, steal the hood/FL fender, a few interior parts (drivers torn grey seat bottom), and prep the donor 3.2 JA32A 6MT (anyone have a line on a Comtech supercharger?) for drop in when the manumatic goes. Known problem as mentioned - this one has been replaced at 110k). That'll be a bit of an overtaking: 3-pedal assembly, gauges (possibly, need to overcome a one-piece odometer) and center console section.
I currently own a 2001 CL type S that I have owned for eleven years and have 338000 miles on it. The car still drives and handles great. With an updated Bluetooth Bose surround sound system. The comfort while spending around two hours a day to and from work and four to six hour road trips is nice. I did have to do a transmission swap four years ago but I felt the car was worth the experience. This car is heavy but that translates to good handling in inclement weather. 70 miles an hour in a downpour or rutted hyway it has been real stable. The reliability of this car has been awesome. Only other thing I had an issue with was a fuel injection sensor that was intermittent but a little research led me to the $20 part. Finding one from 2001 to 2003 with a lot less miles on it I would consider an update. I have been reluctant to move on from this car because comfort and reliability are hard to move away from.
@@TheSmokingTire I have seen five six speeds for sale in southern Wisconsin in the past 12 months. Almost bought one twice. Kinda blows me away because I think only like 1300 or maybe 3k came with the six speed nationwide.
@@thechillywinds5810 ~3500, but a lot were stolen, used for swaps, or totaled. Theres a whole breakdown of how many were made somewhere on the internet. White on black interior with navigation is the rarest at 14 made I think?
Good review! I like how you explain the form of luxury theory, totally true... Also I'd like you guys mention when cyclists are on the road, it's a good reminder for some.
Fun fact about this car. The J32A2 engine and 6-spd LSD transmission n this car can be swapped into a first Gen NSX fairly easily with an aftermarket kit. The NSX transmission even bolts up to the block perfectly.
Just bought one today, it has 342000 on it . Dealer maintenance all of its life . 3 timing belt services . A true testimony to acura quality. Will be my sons first car this may. It is still solid , zero rust . Very happy with it
I had a 2001 CL Type S but I hated the slushbox auto tranny. When the 2003 6-speed manual came out I traded up to that. It had the Comptech headers & exhaust, but I didn’t get the supercharger. FUN CAR, I miss it sometimes. Had it for about 5-years
I bought the '03 CL Type S back in 2016 and it's been my daily ever since, and parked next to my '98 CL Premium until I sold the '98 to my buddy. I do know I was fortunate at the time of my purchase, and I'd always intended to keep and maintain this beauty knowing that the market would eventually take notice and I'd never get a shot at one again for less than what I paid. TST has validated my instincts and that feels nice. If you're one of the lucky few with the Comptech package; I salute you! You're the rarest among the rare.
Great video as usual, sir. The last bit about the luxury of owning a car that simply works all the time was brilliant. I've explained this same thing to people over the years and get unusual looks. Until their German car is in the service 3 times a month and I have to pick them up on the way to work in my Acura. Then it sinks in.
I just bought the 2003 type S today for a steal of a price and it runs amazing. Everything but the front overhead interior lights work as expected. Car does have that FWD steering pull, but it's very manageable once you get used to it (took me just a few turns). I don't think I've ever seen one on the road before in LA either and man. Everything you said was exactly why I bought it. It's reliable, fun, moderately fast, and luxurious. Edit: Drove it from California to Tennessee and back, thing didn't hiccup even once. Great car.
These cars are amazing... I’ve had my 2003 CL Type-S 6 speed for 2 years now... It has 308,000 miles as I’m typing this and I’ve abused it a lot... Only 2 problems I’ve had with it was snapping my right axle shaft twice (once after doing a reverse donut) which is a Honda problem and something that can be repaired in your driveway and the catalytic converters clogging so that gave me a good excuse to straight pipe it which made it legit sound like an NSX and turns a lot of heads... I recommend this car to anybody who has any sort of enthusiasm towards Honda products... You will not be disappointed!
I got the manual on a standalone full exhaust hybrid racing shifter detent springs bc coilover clutch masters flywheel and fx whatever clutch kit making this car as modern as I can afford for now and love all of it and it surprises all the vq boys around my house this thing I love everything about it pearl diamond white on a tune from my local shop has a Cia not doing to much with that I love this car and the j platform the tlx type s is homage how great and slept on our community is 95 to 2024 almost 30 years of advances and everything is still pretty interchangeable!!
The TRUE rare version of the 3.2 CL Type S is rather the 2003 model year with the 6 Speed in which it was the only year it came with it and the final model year of the CL
I have an '03 CL Type-S 6 Spd Manual that i've owned since '03 :). it now has 165,000km. It is in that same Aegean Blue(love that colour) but with a spoiler. Best car i've ever owned in both luxury and sportiness. I've had very little to no issues with this car over the years, still love it today. i appreciate this car for what it is, a luxury sports coupe. If you want to make it "sportscar" like, change out the struts/shocks(had to at 160,000), sways bars to something aftermarket and better tires, It drives and handles amazing now. :)
@@PremierAutoMan86 just because something is modified, doesn't mean that it's in worse condition. I've got a rare '06 Accord Sedan V6 6MT. It's high mileage and I've been replacing all the worn rubber (seals, bushings, etc), replaced the carpet, headliner. Should I spend $1500+ rebuilding my original, J30A5 that has almost 300k miles? Or should I use this J35A8 engine with < 100k miles that I just pulled out of a wrecked RL and bought for $325? Gee, I wonder.
Good point at the end Zack. Luxury isn't just about ugly quilted leather. I was helping a lady friend car shop way back and drove a 2nd Gen and a 3rd Gen TL and was shocked at how good the older 2nd gen TL felt to drive. The later one has a good look but was video gamey by comparison. I can sort of see why Hondas around the year 2000 have this following as being their modern golden age.
Just obtained a 2003 Acura TL Type S with 280,216 miles on it...every component works flawlessly and it drives like new. Never considered an Acura, but I'm sure glad I got this one!
Bought one of these for 3.5k that had 100k miles on it all original. bad trans but the dealer rebuilt it when we realized it was slipping. had no problems for 60k then the transmission problems came back. The car carried me from my labor job making less than min wage and community college, through university, and a desk job until I could buy my first new car. Financially it was the best purchase I've ever made. Literally not a single problem for 5 years.
You don't need to be drifting or tracking an E46 to appreciate it, all the inputs are so much better, and it doesn't feel nose heavy or torque steer like v6 accords do, all things to appreciate at 5/10ths, not just drifting.
I have the 03 Type S 6MT with spoiler. Got it 2ish years ago. Glad their rarity is already being found. May have to flip it! Also the car on this video is the one you DONT want. MT ONLY!
How I describe the proper sequential shifting to non-car people: It goes with the forces. When you accelerate, you're pushed back in your seat, so pull the lever in the same direction. When you brake, you're thrown forward into the seatbelt, and likewise push the lever to gear down.
CL means Contemporary Luxury. I currently have an ‘03 Type S with the 6-speed closed ratio manual transmission and limited slip differential. Only 3,511 were made with manual transmission. It is more engaging to drive, and it is 200 lbs lighter than the automatic. Great car, I’ve put about 60,000 miles on it, and as you said, everything works.
Super stoked when I see videos with the 2nd gen cls/tls. Proud owner of an 03 Acura cl type s 6 speed and an 02 acura tl type s. Only replaced the auto once over the course of 10+ years
My 2001 CL-S has 300k miles and aside from the glass transmission that had a fragile 3rd gear clutch pack, it’s been very reliable and easy to work on. It has a good powerband all the way up to when the VTEC hits. Equipped with a set of 235 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires, it handles graciously around corners. The perforated seats do crack and rip, but the seats are comfortable. The most underrated thing about this car was the sound acoustics inside the cabin with the stock Bose speakers. If you upgrade the radio to an Alpine head unit that allows you to tweak the EQ, it really brings the Bose speakers to another level. The sound is better than my E60 M5 with logic 7 surround sound and surprisingly, I get more people asking about my daily driver CL-S than my M5. The downsides about this car are that being 20 years old, OE Honda parts are slowly getting harder to find and the 3.2L V6 does eat up a lot of gas especially as it ages. Compared to the 5.0L V10 on an E60 M5 that averages 11 mpg, the CL-S is a Prius but as a daily driver, I find myself at the gas pump more often than newer, more fuel efficient V6s out on the road.
I had one. Six speed. It was very comfortable but there was a lot I didn’t like. It had a lot of body roll in corners. I mean they are pretty heavy. Steering wheel didn’t telescope (yet an older Acura legend did). Weird steering. Felt like I was sitting too high. Sort of weird looks. It was an excellent highway cruiser. Very comfy seats. Great visibility. Quiet. Lots of power.
I had one too, and I agree with your points. It did roll a lot and understeer. It was heavy and pretty slow, frankly. And compared to modern cars you felt like you were sitting above the car rather than in it. But you didn't care because winding out the J-series V6 was such a pleasure, especially long pulls above VTEC threshold in 2nd and 3rd.
@@michaelchimenti4989 agree with everything you said. Though it was fast enough for a 21 year old. I’m 25 now. I think it’s a great rare car but I feel like it’s overhyped. The transmission, engine, sound system, and interior quality and comfort were the highs of the car.
I had a 2001 as my first car. Never an issue. Super comfy. Decent handling and decent acceleration. Great first car just wish I could’ve got the manual
I'm 63, I just bought one of these recently. Mine is the lowly base model but let me tell you it's a little screamer! Now my 'inner Motorhead' is thinking of such things as headers and a manifold/lower pulley swap! The car handles pretty well too and I love the bucket seats they have great side bolstering. Swanky spanky lil' Coupe it is!
I had a 2001 CL Type-S that was purchased third- hand. Despite some issues caused by the previous owner (running it on regular gas instead of the required premium, for example), it was such a fun car to drive. The automatic never gave me any problems whatsoever. What DID give me problems were the O2 sensors (kept on going out) and the fried CPU. 😭 I still loved that car; I felt like hot shit when I bought it.
My dad was going to buy one of these when they were new. Deal fell through and he ended up waiting a year and getting the new 04 TL instead. Acura made great stuff back then.
After 06 they held up better due to drive by wire. They started cutting power between shifts. Honda really screwed up putting the trans filters internal. If it wasn't for that there wouldn't have been a issue besides the 3.2 the shafts wasn't stout enough.
@@joshf1170 Same as mine. My only complaint about it is the excessive wheel hop if you didn't perfectly push on the throttle. Otherwise powerful cruiser.
Circling 200k on my 2003 TL type-a original motor and trans ! And I beat on it everyday . The key is do your service intervals and do your transmission solenoids, pressure switches and Honda fluid/filters and it will last forever !
Another slick thing is how you get to the back seats. You lift the seat belt holder and the front seat folds up & slides forward. Wish more coupes had that style, loved my CL!
I thank my dad for buying a 2003 Acura CL Type-S with the manual. The manual is the best part of that car: it's short, direct, and very positive. I never missed a gear. Unfortunately it had 300,000km+ on it now, and it's a little worse for wear. The engine isn't making full power (probably needs an EGR clean and valve clearance adjustment), and I now realise how heavy it drives and how poorly I fit in the cabin at 6'-1" tall. Great engine and transmission, and perfectly comfortable on long road trips.
Hers a great fact - these cars were all recalled and there was a class action lawsuit - I had one, I loved it - until the crazy transmission failures. I had mine for 3 tears and went through (6) transmissions.. I eventually traded it in for a TL type S 6 speed manual.. never again, ever!! I was so heart broken.. the TL type S was however trouble free (all automatic Type S were recalled)
I had an 03 type s 6 speed 1 of 3000 produced. Pulls a bit harder than the auto. 5.9 0 60 vs like 6.5 seconds. And the regular v6 manual accord 2 door is just as fast acceleration wise because it's 600 pounds lighter, top speed wise the cl is a bit faster I've hit 145, could've easily hit 155 160 and all I had was a aem cold air intake, which was awesome, came with instructions with pictures for my specific engine Tranny combo. Never had any issue with the car and I beat and I mean beat the cap out out of it Rev limiting it all the damn time. 200k miles never had any issue. With weight reduction and coils and chasis upgrades its a great FF car to autocross. Has more valves than the mustang gt that's why it's stronger. 24 vs 16 but less displacement more compression. I loved this car, but have driven very fast stuff like p100d, rs7,ctsv and sti because I was a valet so I got bored of the speed eventually because of my job spoiling me. "Owning a car that works all the time is a form of luxury" I wholeheartedly agree!
I couldn't agree more. Not having to worry whether it will start, leave you stranded, or if that pesky check engine light will pop up is the ultimate form of luxury in my opinion. For that aspect alone, 1995 to 2005 Japanese-made cars are truly unbeatable.
and this CL-S with that extremely unreliable 5spd automatic will not provide that experience

Another Acura that no one seemed to care about when it came out and is now finally getting the appreciation it deserves.

7k for a cl-s with 45k is a freaking steal.
Very very rare.keeping mine and my 6 speed tl 4th gen

Nice car, solid one take as usual Mr Zack. Another rare Honda that we don't see is the Legend coupe.
I been waiting so bad for this one! Excellent
What was done to the motor to get it to 273 whp?
Would you rock an Acura CL Type S?

I can't imagine how rare an '03 CL is today. I was shopping in 2007 and wanted a low mileage CL. I looked and couldn't find any after 2002 and every CL I found had more miles than I wanted. Ended up buying a base 2003 TL without Nav, then added a Pioneer AVIC head unit with nav, CD, and backup camera. I did have to replace the transmission but the extended warranty from Zurich paid for everything including rental car. Best car I've ever owned.
I don't know about "never break". The auto trans were notorious for almost routinely failing before 90k miles.
You're not wrong. - ZK
I forget, but they only made like 3500 6 speeds total in 2003 only
@@TheSmokingTire I've also been trying to put my finger on what I didn't like about the exterior design since when you look at the elements that a coupe has (general proportions, how the rear of the greenhouse meets the beltline, etc.) , it would seem that all these elements are there on the CL and because it's a clean shape, it should look like a classic sleek coupe.

Fast forward 27 years, I have just procured my second '03 CL-S, a CLEAN manumatic 5AT with 186k miles and a spoiler.

The comfort while spending around two hours a day to and from work and four to six hour road trips is nice. Even rarer than the automatic and good luck finding one in decent shape and not modded.
A few years back I had a chance at a sorta rough TL-S with the 6MT. I regret not buying it even though I like my Prelude.
I have a 2000 tl type s for a daily, has almost 200k on it hasn't had any problems makes a good comfy daily and somewhat fun to drive.
After market intake sound so good on those
I have the 03 Type S 6MT with spoiler.
I feel great reading these comments in my 6speed 03. I promise you, it’s worth looking for a manual one. I got mine for $2800 last year
Also own one. Hands down worth it!
Omg I loved the CL type-S. great speed, nice interior and unique luxury coupe for the time. lovely time machine. thank you
Super stoked when I see videos with the 2nd gen cls/tls.
I had a CLK 320 for 10 years. I always secretly wanted this Type S instead of my CLK.
I had one.
Quiet. Lots of power.
surprisingly, I had a 2005 accord V6 six speed before and it drove much better. I drove them back to back.
The 6 speed is so different.night and day. still have mine.not getting rid of it
I've got an '03 six-speed manual as my first car and I love it
Currently have with the manual. And keep thinking I wanna sell it… but it keeps being a great daily driver
Good luck with those Honda years transmissions mated to the V6. 👍 get the manual.
Yep. One year they were a total failure might have been the 01 year
@@fredwilliams7893 I believe it was anything pre-06, mated to a V6.
@@evoheadshovel yea probably. It's a shame considering the rest of the car was pretty good 👍
After 06 they held up better due to drive by wire. They started cutting power between shifts. Honda really screwed up putting the trans filters internal. If it wasn't for that there wouldn't have been a issue besides the 3.2 the shafts wasn't stout enough.
I miss my 2003 CL-S 6spd sooo much. So mad at my wife for forcing me to sell it.
Miss mine too. Such a good transmission and motor. 2003 CL-S 6MT in Nighthawk Black Pearl here
@@joshf1170 Same as mine. My only complaint about it is the excessive wheel hop if you didn't perfectly push on the throttle. Otherwise powerful cruiser.
should be ex wife now
So she wears the pants in the relationship?
@@WTFVideos_4416 Eh, if you say so. I did end up with a manual 540iT instead.🏆
I bought one new in 2001. Great car! (besides dropping a transmission at 42,000 miles that dealer covered)
I understand that was the weak point in the car.
Circling 200k on my 2003 TL type-a original motor and trans ! And I beat on it everyday . The key is do your service intervals and do your transmission solenoids, pressure switches and Honda fluid/filters and it will last forever !
TYPE-S
Another slick thing is how you get to the back seats. You lift the seat belt holder and the front seat folds up & slides forward. Wish more coupes had that style, loved my CL!
I just traded an old van for one just like this one with 153,000 miles. Did not know this car had so much power. I'm the 3rd owner. Love it❤
Just sold my 2003 CL type-s 6spd mt after owning it for 15 years. It had 295000km. Great car, kinda regret selling it.
I have a 2001 Acura CL type S with just over 100,000 miles recently. In 22 years I only had to replace the fluid pump.
I hated automatic. I disliked 4 door, felt almost soccer mom. I have an 06 TL base…..incredible!!!
Most reliable car I ever owned never had to worry about tranny since it was manual
Totally recommend
I got a 2001 CL TYPE S & STILL RUNNING LIKE A CHAMP THANK GOD ITS BEEN A GOOD CAR TO ME
My dad bought a tl type s for $900 2 years ago has like 187k on it. Getting transmission replaced on it now because thats literally the only thing that broke on it so far and was expected. Great car, the rust will probably end its life before it dies
Good luck finding a manual trans CL type S
I couldn't even find any automatics! - ZK
I saw one on Craigslist a month or so ago. The dude wanted like 12 grand for it and it had about a hundred thirty thousand miles. Cool car, but I think I'd pass at that price.
@@TheSmokingTire High desert has a few autos. Lots of stuff sitting around on people’s land w/ for sale signs
@@tn18977 I got a 07 TL type S for around that price about two years ago. Manual w/ about 65k miles. Honestly gotta say, 6/6 Hondas are my favorite cars
Honda J-Series is the best V6 ever made imo. VQ is tied with the Toyota 2GR V6 that’s in the lotus
Amen
I have a 2003 TYPE S 6 speed with a 3.7 stroked motor it is one of the Best cars I've owned. You have to by the 6 speed if you can find one, they are night and day better than the automatics.
I have a 03 6spd. What motor combination did you build? Planning to do a project with my boys.
When he yelled “NOT YET NOT YET” I jumped alittle 😂
