    Robert Schumann (8 June 1810 - 29 July 1856) was a German composer and influential music critic. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Schumann left the study of law, intending to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. He had been assured by his teacher Friedrich Wieck that he could become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury ended this dream. Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing.
    The Novelletten, Op. 21, is a set of 8 pieces for solo piano, written by Robert Schumann in 1838. The Novelletten were composed during February 1838, a period of great struggle for the composer. Schumann originally intended the eight pieces to be performed together as a group however they are often performed separately with great success. This set of pieces is an excellent example of Schumann's keyboard style.

    Stupenda, altissima resa interpretativa del Grande D.Ciani, caratterizzata da una finezza sonora, una capacità pittorica fuori dal comune, e rispondente appieno al fervore inquieto del Mondo Interiore di R.Schumann.
    Forse è retorico il dirlo ma grandi Pianisti così non scompaiono con la dipartita, ma rimangono qui, con chi vuol tendere l' orecchio ad ascoltarli, per Sempre.

    I can't imagine listening to this music in a set, Schumann had a special gift as a composer, but had no idea what people would be able to digest during a performance

      I totally disagree, there's nothing I love more than that feeling after being battered non stop for the best part of an hour and then finally sitting back and being like 'woah'

      @@hb3393 l can understand where you come from, as a performer myself, wanting to put this whole thing together is so tiringly hard, especially with few(not all sets) of Schumann's work. So I can easily assume what the audience would feel ftom what I can bd able to convey organically, and that is where my perspective comes from "if it's hard for me to put convincingly, how much harder would it be for the audience to grasp it"

      I cant agree more with you. This work is too much for the audience to digest especially for a non musical audience. Even for a musical audience a live experience of this work would be more enjoyable if somebody have already listened to it at least once. Speaking from personal experience i really had to spare much time to finally appreciate these novelettes.

    #s 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 are my favorites (although I love them all). These Novellettes are Schumann at his most colorful, most stream-of-consciousness, most demanding for the listener. But so rewarding!

    Oh my god finally 23:47! Been stuck in my head for a week. Finally found it. Incredible how such a short major switch can get stuck in your head. It remembered it as a lot longer.

    I love the last novelette! I love the melody 38:17 marked "Stimme aus der Ferne" (distanced voice), which keeps developing at 38:53. And then it reappears at 43:45

      Stimme aus der Ferne is an apt title for that passage because the first theme never returns after that as if it's completely lost; as you can see, the piece is ended by the waltz and not the first theme.

    As sonn as the first theme of the first novelette, we can see the perfect and natural use by RSch of what Schoenberg called "extended tonality".

    To compare it with Horowitz' late version is interesting.

    H. gets a bit tangled at the very end, but I find the whole is more assimilable than this lovely version, I think because Horowitz highlights a singular line of melody (or sometimes, unexpectedly, a line in the harmony), so that it's a combination of gracious ease and nervous expectation (what will he do next?)... Whenever everything is equally brilliant, and equally stressed, as here, it's a bit tiring.

      Henselt had been a long time friend of Schumann, although the last years of his life their relationship cooled. This work was a dedication to Henselt as a result of the tendency of their time. Composers used to dedicate their compositions to others out of friendship, admiration or even social reasons.

      It's actually not even that. "Mässig" doesn't mean "moderate" in this case - it means "Like a ball" or "ball-like".

      Mmm, are you German? Maybe it's a meaning of massig I didn't know, because I know that "ball-like" would be "ballhaft" (like Schattenhaft is "like a shadow" in Scherzo from Mahler's 7th).

      I am German, yes. The word construction Schumann uses is indeed a bit strange, I guess that is part of his poetic use of language. You are right, "ballhaft" is correct and to me sounds even better. However, both mean exactly the same thing. The only reason I can think of why Schumann chose "mäßig" is that it comes from the noun "Maß" (measure) and thus could give a feeling of tempo or timing. At the same time it could just be that he prefers the sound of the word. ;-)
      "Moderate Dance" by the way would be "Mäßiger Ball".

    I don't understand why Ciani sustaines the last note of the first piece. That is clearly not what is written.

      Sure enough the very last note is a quarter note followed by one quarter rest and that is how it ends despite the entire work is in 4/4 time and there is no "2 quarter note" lead in at the beginning. Just another Schumann peculiarity.

      Well, its indeed a heavily orchestral work and sounds complex thats why a one time listen is not enough to understand this work and generally this is true for the majority of Schumann works

Chopin is great to play to please an audience, and Liszt is great to perform on stage, but when I'm is sitting quietly pondering upon the intricacies of the universe or enjoying a fantastical journey through a world of senses (trippy as kids call it nowadays), I listen to Beethoven and Schumann
