Palram Harmony Greenhouse Growing Tips

  • If you're going to start seeds in a greenhouse like this one, here's some things to keep in mind:
    1. Temperature- Make sure you have appropriate heat in the colder months and proper ventilation in the warmer months. Temperatures will rise quickly once the sun is out, reaching 110 degrees fahrenheit within a few hours, if it's 60 or 70 degrees outside.
    2. Moisture- Make sure your growing trays are either deep, bottom watered, equipped with some sort of drip irrigation, or make sure you're watering at least twice a day. With temps rising quickly, it's easy for the trays to dry out.
    3. Shade Cloth or Cover- this is important if you started your seeds indoors and move them into the greenhouse. They need to be under some filter or protection from the sun so they have time to develop the photo receptors needed to process the intense sunlight.
    4. Stimulating Your Plants- an oscillating fan or ability to allow wind into the greenhouse or staging plants outside for periods of time is important so the plants get used to some resistance and are stimulated to strengthen their stems before setting them out into the garden.
    5. Nutrition- plants need a source of food. The potting mix needs to be mixed with fertilizer or worm castings to provide a food source. It is also helpful to apply a liquid fertilizer at least once a week.
    If you have any tips, feel free to share in the comments section of this video.

    Thank you for sharing this! It's helpful information. A solar-powered auto fan in the apex could help when it's extra hot, if it gets too bad, one fan out at the gable, one fan at the louver window may help. We need to get creative with climate changes.

      Yeah- typically, we just leave the door open in the summer during the day to mitigate the heat. Between that and the window louvers, it seems to work ok. But maybe I’ll get a solar fan someday.

    Just taken delivery of same greenhouse here in Cork,Ireland. Not looking forward to building it as it resembles a very difficult jigsaw! How many man hours did it take?? Also,how is it fastened to the ground...we get bad winter storms in Ireland

      It does seem daunting at first. It took us a few days to build it. I’ve got a couple of videos we made about it if you search my channel. The key is to not skimp on the base. We spent about $300 on base materials to make sure it was rock solid. The other key in assembling the frame is to leave it a little loose so you can slide the panels in more easily, then tighten it all down. I’ve had mine now for about 6 years and it’s still good as new.

    Thank you for the video. You didn’t have to do it and it was nice of you to show your work. C:

    I started using a ceramic heater in winters to keep temps at 70F at nights, but it caused the automatic vent opener to vent it. So I removed the vent opener. How did you handle it?

      Yeah- I ended up backing out the screw that controls when it engages and that seemed to work.

    You may want to get a 55 gallon drum of water or two in there. It will act as a heat sink and suck up the heat during the day and help keep it warm at night.

      Good idea! I might check into getting something. I do have an old pickle container drum at my old house. Might need to make a trip over to pick it up.

      I would highly recommend the Palram Harmony Greenhouse. My family pitched in and got it from Costco for my 40th birthday. It's really well designed, a lot of quality materials. The key is making sure your foundation is rock solid. There were some reviews that talked about how it didn't hold up to high winds, etc, but that's because they didn't have it secured to a good foundation. I've had no such issues, and it's in somewhat of a high wind area. We ratcheted down 28, 2" long, 1/4" thick lag bolts into the holes provided into 4x6x8 timbers buried in the ground. Also, it helps to keep everything a little loose so you can slide the panels in easily, and then tighten everything up once their in. Thanks for watching!

    I’m looking at an 8x20 to grow tomatoes all summer to keep the deer and other critters off them. Plus I would like to getting an earlier start and later growing season. Summer temperatures here (northern Arkansas) stay in the high 90’s to as high as 110 in July and August. Do you think I will be able to keep it cool enough for tomatoes? Thanks.

    • @ohhowhappygardener
      @ohhowhappygardener  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Last I think so. Other people have installed fans to keep the air circulating, if too much heat is a concern. We just left the door open during the day so there was plenty of ventilation.

    Hey Video is excellent , got the same greenhouse earlier this year , just putting it up now , LOVE your shelves . we are in the UK and looking forward to trying to grow tomatoes .

      will jones Thanks! We spent extra on the foundation to make sure it’s rock solid. I’ve got an earlier video on the actual build that you might want to check out. I put this up last Winter and it’s been great so far. Thanks for watching and subbing!

      I'm sure it looks great. We added an automatic side window louver this past summer to help keep the temps down in the greenhouse.

    • @ohhowhappygardener
      @ohhowhappygardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      will jones No, never got around to getting a Facebook account. TH-cam is my primary social media outlet. I’ve got a google + account that google required all TH-cam users to open a few years ago. I don’t really use it. I don’t have anything against Facebook but I think I’d be on it too much if I had an account lol.

    Thanks! Thinking about getting one but greenhouses do seem like a lot of work. I'll keep thinking about it.

      PC Henderson It wasn’t too difficult to set up. But you’ll definitely want to invest in a good base so it is sturdy. I would use it more except it’s at my Dad’s house and not practical for me to drive out there every day. But it gets pretty good use in the late Spring.

      @@ohhowhappygardener Thanks! I saw some tutorials on making poly tunnel like lids for raised beds so also considering that as an option.

      @@ohhowhappygardener I’m an amateur gardener, don’t need to use it during the winter, and thinking of building a greenhouse with the same clear roof structure you have but putting screens on all the walls rather than the plexiglass to let lots of air in and keep critters out. Do you think that would work as far as letting enough light in? Thanks

    Green house looks good and all the plants. Thanks for the review. Maybe one day I’ll setup something similar, my plastic 6x8 is giving up already. LOL. My problem is the other way, can’t keep the hot temperature in because the thing is so old and plastic window Velcro’s won’t hold up any more.

    • @ohhowhappygardener
      @ohhowhappygardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah... I had a 6x8 plastic greenhouse, and it held up for maybe 2 seasons. Hopefully, this one will hold up for years. It will be interesting to see what I can do with it this Fall/Winter.

    By the way the greenhouse temp does easily go in the 100s if only the vent is open. Even after using a 50% shade cloth. Now I just open the door during the day and close it at night

    • @ohhowhappygardener
      @ohhowhappygardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah- I’ve been doing the same during the summer and just leaving the door open and closing it at night.

    Where did you get your seed trays?

    • @ohhowhappygardener
      @ohhowhappygardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A friend at work made the wooden trays for me based on instructions found in the Mittleider growing guide. They don't look too difficult to build. If you google Mittleider seed-starting trays, there will be some links show up to LDS Prepper's channel. He's got a couple of videos on how to make them. As for the plastic 1020 Quad trays, I got those from a hydroponics store, but they can be purchased online too for about $2.50 to $3.00 a piece. 4 times thicker than the cheap stuff and built to last for a really long time. Thanks for watching ; ).
