Repairing Old Fiberglass Screw Holes In a Classic Boston Whaler Montauk - Part 7

  • In this video I go over how to repair old screw holes on a fiberglass boat. This Classic Boston Whaler Montauk came to me completely stripped down so I honestly had no idea in what condition the original screw holes were in. With that in mind, I go ahead and repair all of them (the ones facing downward).
A key element of the repair is coring out an area underneath the deck so that the epoxy resin can expand, in effect providing a solid platform for attaching items to the deck. One thing I do different foam others here is to use a bent nail rather than an Allen wrench to core out some foam. When the time comes to add rails, the leaning post z-legs, etc, I'll re-drill the holes in the epoxy filler.

So if I'm gonna take the z-legs, console and rails off to refinish boat I should not re-use the same holes without filling them in completely first? Also would you still use epoxy if I'm gonna re-spray gel coat on the entire boat? Thanks!

That depends on the condition of the holes. When I got the boat it was already disassembled, I assumed that they were all bad. If I had dissembled it, I would have made note of what holes were bad and repaired those. To be Honest, I think using the original holes as much as possible is preferable.

@@jasonsmith7809Your welcome! FOrgot to answer the second part. I think you should be fine with the epoxy if you use a high build primer first. Check with the folks at Jamestown D/Total Boat first. Their tech staff are pretty awesome!

Hi Jose, another informative video. My dad tried fixing a wooden transom on an old boat. It worked but looked like crap. At least he wasn't afraid of trying and watching him taught me how not to do it😂
