I know, right? Was it kind of a weak joke? Did they ask somebody who'd never been to the United States to insert some "buffalo" video? Did they just ask AI to do it? Did they leave it in on purpose? Was my view of the American west completely wrong all these years?
I grew up in Spearville, KS, which is located 17 miles east of Dodge City. Quite a few of my high school nights were spent cruising Wyatt Earp Blvd. In the very early 1980s, I moonlighted in the Front Street Replica as a "cowboy gunfighter". The last time I was back that way, they were still doing the tourist acts that we pioneered.
Sorry but this is terrible editing. As a native of western Kansas we're literally known for praires and FLAT ground. You used mountains and the desert to describe Kansas.
Well you might be surprised to learn that there are some rather sizable cliffs scattered throughout the state of Kansas. Most are east of Wichita. But I can't recall any around Dodge though
All that research into the rich, wild history of Dodge City marred by consistent images of Water Buffalo in place of American Bison. Now I'm left wondering what other images were wrong. tsk tsk tsk Perhaps the editor needs a good talkin' to?
That was fun! I love Wild West stories. They are so romanticized and exaggerated, it just makes the imagination go wild. It's no surprise why Wild West movies took off some decades ago.
Born and raised in Dodge, this cracked me up. They still did cattle drives when i was a youngster, even down 2nd, 14th, & Wyatt Earp. Also, Hoover opened the first bar in a tent until for the Ft Dodge soldiers in a tent until the bldg was built. The mtns, bro. The mtns! Hahahaha. There are NOT mtns in Dodge.
It's really hard to watch after *continuous* mentions of Cape Buffalo and not American Bison. Maybe it's worth editing scripts to the word Bison and not Buffalo.
Faro was a very popular card game in the old west. One reason it was popular was that its rules gave the dealer such a small advantage that customers in an honest game might play for a long time and experience many winning hands before they lost all the money. However, that feature of the game made it very difficult for an honest dealer to earn a decent living, so approximately 179% of the dealers cheated and made an awful lot of money. Wyatt Earp had started out as a bouncer in houses of prostitution, which was considered a proper apprenticeship for being a lawman, which was also very profitable. During the lengthy periods when he could not get elected to a juicy position in the constabulary, Earp spent quite a lot of time dealing Faro, which was also a profession to which a fellow who could control violent or potentially violent happenstances was well-suited.
Would have been better if the editor used video and still photos of the American Bison (Buffalo) as opposed to the African Water Buffalo. Other than that it was very informative.
@@paulherman5822 Yes, I have listened to a lot of Spike Jones, and I have that record. I was thinking it might have been him, but I couldn't recall any of his records that were in the period when Wyatt Earp was a ubiquitous myth.

If you are going to talk Buffalo in Kansas around Dodge City, then at least have videos of real American Bison and not African buffalo. That is very poor video editing to have done that.
Hire people who are paid a living wage and require actual qualifications instead of going on fiver or the cheapest option which it is clear you did. This channel isn't worth subscribing to if the people who run it clearly don't give a shit. Simon was right to leave.
this is so poorly written and edited.... the Sante Fe trail was for cattle driving not settlers, and the vastly bad selection of pics of water buffalo... Jesus who is doing the writing and editing now a the graphics site? fire the space what ever he is and bring back Simon; i couldnt even finish the video
great video but I always gotta wonder if "Wickedest City" etc is well earned? Back then was era of sensationalist journalism/headlines, pulp magazines, etc..."Any PR is good PR" comes to mind: they prob relished in the notoriety, as it was decent PR to get settlers. 'Major' rail stops in those early transcontinental rail days was also important. That said, I think there were prob a lot of mining towns/real frontier (and rustic) towns that were far more dangerous: from 'indian raids', to crime/iniquity, to "nobody will know" (cuz its a frontier location, and until they all had telegraphs, you could prob get away with a lot of serious crime fairly easily, w/o reprisal...Just travel to next town, say you're somebody else. done0.
I am skipping this video after 4 minutes because they are showing African buffalo. Sloppy work/lack of real knowledge of the subject. 2. Offshoring 3. Blaming underlings.

You need to re edit this video. There are no American bison (buffalo) featured. Kind of important.
lol showing water buffalo, when you really want the Bison
Do you know the difference between a buffalo and Bison?

They are actually Bison. Not buffalo. Ridiculous to show an animal that lives in such a different environment.
@kathyshaull3220 Agreed. Different continent.
You lost me with the water buffalo.
Our proofer must not have caught that. I'll talk to the editors.

Nice research. As a Kansan, please - It’s ABBA-lean not Abe-a-lean. I had to stop watching for a minute while I laughed. Keep up the interesting work.
Fun fact: The namesake for Fort Dodge (and, by extension, Dodge City) in Kansas is in no way related to the namesake for Fort Dodge, Iowa.
I hope they keep you on board for this series of videos, Eric.
Great video! Thanks!
Really? You don't know the difference between a Bison and a Buffalo!??? Far out. Written by someone else and not researched. Yeah, nah.

I think the idea of the "wild west" comes from the 30's, when the last of the named gunslingers were writing autobiographies.
Where were you born? That’s not US bison! Some people’s kids.

Boot Hill is a common name for fronteie cemetery. There's one in Deadwood. SD
