Buy a Blackmagic Atem Mini or similar. Apple will NEVER support anything but their own phones. They won't even support older IPhones, according to this video.
Thank you! There's a lot of issues with this too. So in a few weeks we'll show the tricky stuff and highlight some of my workarounds to get really good results out of this workflow.
Excellent video! Thank you for putting this together so thoroughly. Also, where can I find a rolling case with padded iPhone dividers like the one in the very beginning of the video.
Haha! GOOD EYE! That's just a Pelican 1510 with the foam cut out! We did it just because it was kinda ridiculous to fit 4x 4K cameras and lenses and batteries in something that small!
Episode 23 covers many of the settings with the Blackmagic Camera App but haven't done a comparison. For me, the BMC App is super pro (and complex), Apple native Camera is simple (and limited), and Final Cut Camera is in the middle!
Do you think apple will allow other types of cameras? Like mirrorless? I doubt they will allow other companies smartphones but it would be nice to use my Sony mirrorless camera. Although iPhone SE camera is quiet good and affordable 😅
My guess is no. I actually think they’re leaning more towards their own camera (not a phone) and I think tools like this are all part of a developing ecosystem that will one day be superior to mirrorless cameras. I actually think most mirrorless cameras are poorly designed for cinema shooting, but the lenses they offer make them worth it. If Apple allowed for removable lenses, it would be game over for the mirrorless video market.
You can export an XML from FCP iPad to FCP Desktop. If you want auto-transfer of footage, that only works to iPad today (but I connect an external drive to the iPad and so you can use the iPad as an automatic backup machine to a removal USBC drive and then take that to desktop.
Final Cut Camera can run on other model iPhones, but only ProRes is available on the 15 Pro models (and ProRes is currently the only access to log encoding through Final Cut Camera, tho you can shoot Log in HEVC using the Blackmagic Camera app)
That’s an Ambient Lockit Slate. I love them and have been using them for years to help my workflow. Check out Episode 21 because I do a breakdown of how Ambient’s ecosystem works. Thanks for the comment!
My biggest gripe with the iphone 15 is the autofocus. Shooting a real job with it would be a crapshoot if your footage was in focus or not. Manual focus only works if your subject matter is still, so using the iphone for professional shoots is limited. I like the idea of the multicam though.
If you were to use the Black Magic app for iPhone you ARE able to bluetooth connect a nucleus and pull focus that way! Black Magic also just released a multi cam to iPad feature, that might be a solution!
I think you have to use powered mics (I used Rode) and used the USBC direct connect through a dongle (so I could connect both audio and an external drive)
No LOG with H265 = Useless to me compared to Blackmagic Camera. I don't understand why Apple insists on only making LOG available with ProRes. Edit: More I'm looking at it, it looks much less capable compared to Blackmagic app. I have two 15PM already and was considering adding an iPad Pro so I was excited about the workflow (and figure out how to integrate that to Sony LOG footage) but no H265 LOG kills it for me. I hope they release an update about that.
Agreed. That's my #1 or #2 issue with this product. In a future episode I do a deep dive on the Log vs ProRes issues (which aren't just about dynamic range, but also involve concerns about image processing). I wanted to kick off the story here with the steps to make it work, which are admittedly really cool and easy considering 4 cameras! But Log should absolutely be available with HEVC because I agree with you that ProRes is overkill for a lot of use cases.
Apple has transitioned from providing professional video tools to a consumer-level brand, and unfortunately, their "Pro" products and services have been stagnant over the past few years. Specifically, Final Cut Pro, which has been updated infrequently and the updates have been inadequate and lack lustre.
Mind Blowing 🤯 WOOOOW! This is impressive.
Best video yet on the subject
Thanks for comment:) I have another follow-up episode that drives deeper into the gotchas and issues with this. Should be out in a couple weeks!
Amazing video. How does this not have a million views?...
Haha! Thanks for compliment:) We're new...and excited to share our workflow knowledge with the community! Thanks for the comment!
How to use final cut camera app, we can connect wifi dslr camera
Awesome video thank you!!
Brilliant. Thanks a lot, Michael
Amazing! Would be great if it could support non iPhone cameras as well! Like an insta360, go pro or a DJI.

your so underrated! love your videos very well made
Thanks for saying that! Really appreciate it:)
There will be a follow-up to this episode coming soon with even more details and insight!
Outstanding! Great video, Michael. Thanks, looking forward to the next chapter.

Brilliant Michael... thank you once again!
One of the most informative while entertaining videos I saw in a while! Keep going guys!
BlackMagic also has the same idea of making the iPad as a monitor an iPhone display recently, we want to compare it with the Final Cut Pro.
Great breakdown. Subscribed. Thanks 🙏🏽

Makes sense. Thank you! 🙏🏾
Can you make an experimentation with BlackMagic Camera App with multicams too? Vs Final Cut will be very interesting though

Is it possible to sync an iPhone with Tentacle time code? I know Blackmagic Cam app can do this.
You are the best 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Can we transfer the iPad multicam with the collected footage from the different phones into Final Cut on desktop and edit multicam from it?
You can export an XML from FCP iPad to FCP Desktop. If you want auto-transfer of footage, that only works to iPad today (but I connect an external drive to the iPad and so you can use the iPad as an automatic backup machine to a removal USBC drive and then take that to desktop.
@@Michael_Cioni excellent. Thank you
Does it exclusively work with the 15/pro or is it more for maxing out its capabilities?

Awesome & Thanks :)
what is the timecode slate model???

@@Shannon.Strada That's a great idea. I will check that out. Thanks!
True, if only they improve the cinematic mode because you can adjust focus after shooting.
Any option to conect mic by jack?? and power it?

add a DJI RS3 mini and you no longer need a cameraman

Yeah, long time FPC user, switched to Resolve recently. Not marrying to any software they need to up their game.
