Thanks for the video. I did some of this testing with a 2006 Prius. I shifted into neutral with my foot on the accelerator and the car behaves perfectly. I don't know if there is a bug in the Prius software, but there are three ways to stop the car, 1) brakes, 2) neutral, 3) turn off. These points are often not covered well by the media.
dont turn off your car you lose power sterling > breaks > and air bags with safty equipment. Its recomended that the first thing you do is change your car into [N] then apply breaks when power is dissconected. Turn on your harzards and pull off the road safty. No car will ever take off on you if you just change to [N] and break
Sad part...is the people driving by watching you do this are probably thinking...OMG a Prius that's freaking out!!! LOL!! Looked at a '10 last night. Loved it. Might just have get it. ;)
Good video. Obviously your Prius is not malfunctioning. It is interesting to note that the Prius has an electronic gear shifter and is probably controlled by the computer. Software failure could disable the ability to shift into neutral. The same goes for the ignition switch, brake control override with the accelerator pressed and downshifting. "Flying by wire" is a leap of faith that all systems will function properly, especially those that are meant to over-ride acceleration.
Brakes were spent and he stayed on the road for 20-30 minutes. It is unlikely that a control system would be designed to rely on one computer for all functions. More than likely there are override systems that serve as safety cut-offs in the event of a failure. The best system is a real trans shifter and a true keyed ignition switch. As it turns out this Calif guy has motive to falsify a report anyway, but most likely something is going wrong with some percentage of the reported cases.
There's no track where I live. The traffic was pretty light. I assure you no motorist was inconvenienced fron the filming of this video. I posted on youtube for the people that own these cars.
A Toyota spokesman stated that light pressure on the brake pedal won't activate the brake override. So when the CHP officer approached this Prius and saw brake lights, was he seeing a Prius under heavy braking or light? What about the brake smell? Some may ask. No one knows how long Sikes was 'riding' the brakes before he called 911. Could have been all morning.
@hinspere It is not blinking. It appears that way because the frame rate that the video was recorded with is close to the refresh rate of the instrument lights.
The acceration problem was caused by a faulty american made accelerator pedal. I witnessed a news broadcast that mentioned the prius has an american made accelerator pedal that sticks. This same pedal was installed in GM models which were also being recalled for the same problem. It was determined that moisture causes the contact points in the pedal to stick. A faulty american made pedal was the problem. I haven't lost any faith in the quality of craftsmanship that goes into Toyotas.
your right about the power button and the neutral thing, but if the ecu had a problem the brake over ride wouldnt work like it did on yours, hence a malfunction. but i still cant believe that those brakes couldnt overpower that tiny 93 hp engine on march 8
nice video! everyone should watch this to see the truth. I have faith toyota will get over this, they are quite capable to say the least. Afterall, we're all human, we make mistakes
Exactly. What i was thinking was that maybe the shifter is also electric, meaning there is no actual physical connection to the transmission, but instead it sends a signal to the computer which then sends a signal to the transmission.
I live in southern michigan and it depends where you are. If you are in ann arbor, its mostly hondas and toyotas downtown area. If your in Brooklyn, about every1 in 15 cars is foreign. I think 95% of the people out there own american. about half of the vehicles are 20 years old and still on the road. I have a house out there too and someone in town has a old 80's f150 with 675 thousand miles on it. Its how you take care of it
Thank you for posting this. Any person who cannot control their car, even if it really does have a malfunction is an idiot. I laugh at those people who were so stupid when they couldn't stop their car's acceleration. I believe this is some mass hoax or public scare. I have yet to see 1 Toyota with this problem in Europe. Something fishy is going on.
No, definitely not a "mass hoax", and why would Toyota or any other manufacturer want to scare the public away from purchasing their cars? What this boils down to is two things: 1. A scared brain is a brain that can't think clearly 2. A population that is vastly uneducated about the mechanics of the two ton chunk of steel their driving. The person the guy in this video mentions is a perfect example. He wouldn't put the car in neutral because he was afraid of losing control. Neutral = disengaging the clutch, ergo stopping power delivery to the wheels. Neutral = a free spinning driveshaft, thanks to how transmissions are designed. You are not going to lock your rear wheels up by shifting to neutral. And at highway speeds, shifting to park is likely to destroy the parking brake notches/tabs in the transmission before it locks your drive wheels. In short, this is a product of fear and ignorance.
@stephenBquick Right, hard to know how he would benefit. Some thoughts are, 1 he was speeding and trying to get out of a ticket. 2) Fame for some reason, think balloon boy. 3) He was going to sue and his lawyer informed him that he could wind-up in jail if he was found out.
That woman traded her Camry for a Tundra. She didn't mention the cars trouble to the dealership when she traded it in. The person that owns that car now has is aware of the issue now but has never reported the problem to have occured.
@Phelt54 it was never the pedal. Its the electronic throttle. Toyota just never admitted it was that because thats more expensive to fix and it effects both the japan made pedals and american ones. Its a software issue which is why the people who had their cars runaway also couldn't shift into neutral.
... but the brakes are hydraulic and the steering is mechanical. Also I doubt all of those systems would fail at the same time if it was even possible for them to.
Were you driving your Prius in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the winter? I would appear so. I recognize the road your driving on along with the road signs and the snow on the ground.
i agree with most of the people who own a toyota. They said there are nothing wrong with their car and in a very best condition. it looks like something is behind this case for some reason....
Great video. I too though it was ridiculous that he didn't want to shift the car in to neutral for fear of losing control of the car. I'd like to see how much of this is due to a smear campaign over the NUMMI plant situation.
@frankiej510 there is no acid in a NiMh battery. Nickel is precious so the batteries are recycled. There is more nickel in your big shiny rims than in a prius battery. mine is 6 years old and working fine. my care doesn't produce soot or nano patricles like your diesel does. and yes I used veggie oil in my diesel to.
@steve9509 Toyota is mainly American, despite their head office being in Tokyo. most manufacturing/assembly plants are in the US, which builds most of the Toyota's in the world as well as Lexus.
Every car that was ever produced has a neutral that does the same thing that the neutral does in the Prius. And so do the lawn tractors. A transmission with multiple speeds can not possibly be otherwise. Can anybody post a video with proof that any particular car model at anytime in history existed with a neutral that dont disengage the gears at any speed? That find will be worth watching. (And please dont say that the horse drawn carriages could not be shifted to neutral at full speed.)
There are definitely cases of unintended acceleration but as for the Prius case that occured recently it seems fishy but like most Americans they are sue happy and all they care about is profiting and hoarding all the money they can get instead of going out and getting themselves a job. As of today 60% of the recalled vehicles in the US have been serviced, Americans can continue to play sharades but it will be harder and harder to do so.
VIDEO COMMENT CORRECTION- All Prius are equipped with the over-ride that cancels acceleration when both the gas pedal and brake pedal are pressed. Nate
Find some people with 2005-2009 Silverado Pickups. See how happy they are with their American vechicles. I know several people with Silverados with bad ignition switches and wiring harnesses. Won't start if it's off. Won't shut off if it's running. All cars are bad, from all manufacturers. If I think back to the last good vehicle we ever had, it was a 1981 Ford F100. It had NO options whatsoever. We've made cars and trucks WAY too complicated, and this is the price we pay for it.
I would think once you notice your car climbing above the speed limit you would immediately do something, and hopefully you are not swerving, tailgating, or otherwise in a position where you cannot avoid being able to move over, stop or otherwise. Whatever happened to leaving space, driving defensively, and paying attention to the damn car?
That's right your car only uses nickel which kills the ground that it's taken from. Your car also puts out more greenhouse gasses. Diesels are 40% cleaner than gas burning vehicles. Soot? Whoa, get with the times. Go check out the newer diesel trucks. They hardly shoot soot from their tail pipe due to strict diesel laws requiring all manufactures to use DPF filters.
thanks for the video, still haqve faith in them but there could be issues, I hope this helps informationaly on how to deal with "uncontrolled" acceleration
I'm a huge Honda fan (love my 6th Gen Accord), BUT I think the newer Hondas don't live up to the former Honda standards. The Prius is hideous and the Insight is too small to be practical (for me, maybe not for you). Everybody has recalls on stuff, including Honda. Finally have one on my car, but for the SRS, not brakes, or throttle, or transmission (autos had tons of recalls, manuals like mine had NONE!). Also was built in Japan and never had a problem with it, unlike the ones built in Ohio!
About 15 years ago we had a spate of "unintended acceleration" stories hit the press. Much shock horror journalism. It turned out that they were all just punters who pressed the throttle when they wanted the brake. What they call "pilot error" in the aviation industry, they called "horror ride death cars".
@QuantumStates Which is better for the enviroment, bio fuel or nickel? While nickel miners are killing the land for your Prius, I can make my own fuel with used veggie oil. So tell me one more thing. Where will all those removed batteries go when they need to be replaced? Where will the acid go when you replace the battery? Good job at being a tool and buying into the hype.
You are in Madison and there is a racetrack just south (about 15 miles) of Madison in Oregon (no, not the state but a town near Madison) called Madison International Raceway. Next time...
@pissjug04 There is no difference. 95 or 70, the mechanisms of the car still act the same. Shifting into neutral, either manually or by turning off the engine, is not affected by speed of the car. If you understand how the mechanics of a car works, it'll make more sense. Look it up, do some studies on how transmission works and you'll understand.
Another point to consider.. while driving at 94 MPH "out of control" .. Mr. Sikes was able to take the time to call the police but not able to shut the car off or put it in neutral. Bullshit. You can even see his lying in the video, it's ridiculous. I don't own a Toyota but it pisses me off to see someone bullshit so hard.
@nateriesen What D: If it wasn't for airbags or seatbelts, I would have died last friday. My friend slammed into some steel poles at 60 MPH and he rolled his car. I was in the passenger seat. The car landed on the roof, and thanks to the seatbelts holding us in the seat and the airbags stopping us from hitting the windshield, we survived without any injury. (It was a '97 Ford Taurus. Ironically, I hate Ford. Haha.)
@ prmars You know what I completely agree with you. Every car has its problems. But they are not nearly as dangerous as toyotas problems. ut I agree that cars are too complicated. I dont need bluetooth sync and all the little things they put in cars now. The reason older cars last so long is because they were basic and only had things that were neccesary. Today you see lots of cars that are from the 80's and 90's. All the crap they put in cars now, they wont last 10 years.
Hmmm. something tells me that your suggested manuever won't help when the Prius has already climbed over a barricade and killed the occupants of the Toyota! It won't help the driver who has already mowed down some pedestrians in the path of his Toyota! It won't help the Toyota owner who is going 100 MPH with a stoplight and traffic ahead as he/she will have already impacted another vehicle before the Toyota decelerates sufficiently!
Better yet, if your Prius is going 94 mph, just put the window down and stick your arm out the window, or turn the A/C on... that should slow it down considerably. LOL
I would like to know why instead of doing this on your local track (yes most large towns have one in some way (racing is huge in america assuming thats where you are) instead of doing this on the open road where there are lots of people trying to drive and your pulling off the road creating a major safety issue just so you can post somthing on youtube
Simple answer to a very complex problem----what is wrong with this picture? Is this Toyota once again trying to minimize the problem? Once again trying to finger-point and reprimand the people who were foolish enough to make the purchase in the first place? Such lovely customer service at Toyota, huh?
Haha yep. Tiny motor in those, but with a large electric motor, who needs one? And just like any car, when you turn off the motor (usually by turning to ACC (don't turn it to LOCK as it lock steering)) you still retain manual brakes and manual steering. Probably the result of a lawsuit as Hybrid cars were (and still are) misunderstood.
@apoxalypse swap a bigger motor i dont think so i dint swap anything on mu 03 cobra n from the factory it can handle up to 800 hp on a stock block so ur point is???the only thing i did was upgrade to a kb mammoth S/C n better internall to handle more power. u imports do motor swapt only to get 20 to 30 hp more lame
@Indigochild81 your right they will burn your house down.... dont know what i mean search carquestions on youtube and look thro all that show him working on cars or find the one with the windshield wiper heater
So you are saying, Toyota is not Japanese because they are manufactured here in the US? I honestly do not get what you are trying to say. Think a little.
Good job. Unintended accel. is almost all bunk. Sure, the throttle might, possibly, maybe, stick. However, even cars with three times the hp of a Prius cannot accelerate while brakes are fully applied. Anyone every brake-torqued their car? No car overpowers the brakes. So, what people claim would require simultaneous catastrophic failure of two completely unrelated systems - throttle and brakes. Check out the Audi 5000 bunk from the 1980s. Even the lib feds finally said car was fine.
No actually most Prius owners will see 45mpg. I know many people who owns a Prius. I use to drive my works Prius daily. They get 45mpg average. How clean is my diesel? Hey my diesel is plant friendly, your nickel is not.
What happened is Sikes took advantage of a situation just like everyone else and decided to pull that fake ride of his. Show me a video of toyota with a sticky gas pedal too, I think that was bogus as well. Nothing is wrong with these vehicles.
Bogus you say? Yeah you can say it's bogus but I've had to repair several Corollas because of this issue and the steering issue. Say what you want but I and several other men and women who works for Toyota knows what's real.
@bullpuky Agreed. We've had Fly By Wire controls on aircraft for decades with few crashes attributed to this control system (other than during testing). I feel a car could have an equal or greater safety record as well, but that requires adequate testing. Until then, I'll stick with my 2002 Accord with it's traditional cable throttle that if it sticks, sticks CLOSED, not OPEN! Inadequate shielding probably causes the problem anyway. Even modern ignition systems create tons of Interference.
Regardless if there is a way to stop a prius with a full throttle, no car should have these problems. If My car even did that once I would be done with it. Cars are not supposed to do that. Mine doesnt do that for 2 reasons. 1: It doesnt have that stupid electronic throttle, just a cable to the throttle 2: its an american car. American cars do not malfunction like toyotas do. They dont have all of these cheap japanese components that were probably not even tested before sold.
@chevontiac Even Ford, Chevy and Dodge have foreign investors that get money when someone here buys a vehicle.. There is no such thing as Buy U.S. Stay U.S. maybe 20 years ago you had a chance.. All you can do now is buy an older used car and thats about as close as your going to get to keeping it in the US..
Thanks for the video. I did some of this testing with a 2006 Prius. I shifted into neutral with my foot on the accelerator and the car behaves perfectly.

Very informational even for someone who doesn't own a Prius but heard of the event. Does make me want to get a Prius though.
nice vid, im glad im not the only one who thinks the story has a few holes
Even today in 2022 Toyota Hybrids are still the best cars ever made. and in a emergency, we even can stop them like showed in the video.👍
Nicely done Nate!
OMG your review makes the car safe! Let me buy three!!
Charles, don't fool yourself.
@hinspere
It is not blinking. It appears that way because the frame rate that the video was recorded with is close to the refresh rate of the instrument lights.
My 2004 Toyota Prius doesn’t accelerate faster no matter how hard I depress the gas pedal. Please what should I do to fix that? Thank you 🙏

I agree, I do not think that story is correct. The police did say they could smell the brakes and that the brake lights were on. I'm not really sure.

@apoxalypse Dude, I drive a Celica GT-S. Yes I am aware most car companies make slugs and I am not calling all Toyota's slugs.
i weep for the future push button start fly by wire throttle systems traction control slowly the cars we enjoy r becoming less and less exciting

I would like to know why instead of doing this on your local track (yes most large towns have one in some way (racing is huge in america assuming thats where you are) instead of doing this on the open road where there are lots of people trying to drive and your pulling off the road creating a major safety issue just so you can post somthing on youtube
Wild speculation on my part. lo-blood sugar induced late afternoon rant. sorry.
Simple answer to a very complex problem----what is wrong with this picture? Is this Toyota once again trying to minimize the problem? Once again trying to finger-point and reprimand the people who were foolish enough to make the purchase in the first place?
Such lovely customer service at Toyota, huh?
Nice video, but next time i recommend you test your car on a road with little traffic just for your and other peoples safety.
@frankiej510 - I know right. Building a new car does not save the planet either .
Geez ... they should of called it the Toyota Slug not only does it look like on but its as slow as one.
Haha yep. Tiny motor in those, but with a large electric motor, who needs one?
And just like any car, when you turn off the motor (usually by turning to ACC (don't turn it to LOCK as it lock steering)) you still retain manual brakes and manual steering.
Probably the result of a lawsuit as Hybrid cars were (and still are) misunderstood.
definately. Lets also do-away with seatbelts as they can trap you in the car. Away with airbags, they can kill you.
downshift your car 2 gears while full trotlle and see what your car sound like.
( not counting any tuned model, sports car or big v6/v8 engine )
I love all the copy cats that are doing the "nice" version of my video. LOLOLOLOL
People do just about anything to win a potential lawsuit
@apoxalypse swap a bigger motor i dont think so i dint swap anything on mu 03 cobra n from the factory it can handle up to 800 hp on a stock block so ur point is???the only thing i did was upgrade to a kb mammoth S/C n better internall to handle more power. u imports do motor swapt only to get 20 to 30 hp more lame
@Indigochild81 your right they will burn your house down.... dont know what i mean search carquestions on youtube and look thro all that show him working on cars or find the one with the windshield wiper heater
I thought that looked like Wisconsin
Fuck yes.
Bogus you say? Yeah you can say it's bogus but I've had to repair several Corollas because of this issue and the steering issue. Say what you want but I and several other men and women who works for Toyota knows what's real.
the brakes are mechanical.. they'd work even with the engine off.
You missed the point.
They dont have all of these cheap japanese components that were probably not even tested before sold.
manual transmission and throttle cable ftw.
hide yo kids, hide yo wife, prius is gonna end yo life
@chevontiac
Even Ford, Chevy and Dodge have foreign investors that get money when someone here buys a vehicle..
There is no such thing as Buy U.S. Stay U.S.
maybe 20 years ago you had a chance..
All you can do now is buy an older used car and thats about as close as your going to get to keeping it in the US..
i think whit those kind of shoes you can brake every car whit no brakes at all lol
