This is the problem with our education system. We teach kids that failure is bad, and should be avoided at all costs. But failure is important for learning - you don’t learn anything from success. It teaches you to change, to grow, and to understand what you can do better.
Rather than punish kids for doing badly, we should be helping them to understand what they missed. We should be rewarding them for what they got right. And we should be reminding them every single person makes mistakes, because NO ONE is perfect.

DeathByReeses Kids don’t care about learning because we haven’t done enough to encourage them to care. Society emphasizes schools as a “thing to get through” so they can graduate and get a job, not as an important place where you learn skills. Kids complain about how things like history and math will never be useful to them, and we do a bad job of showing how they are.

Bart's reaction in this clip is so realistic. Imagine for a second you have worked your ass off to try to understand something you find difficult, boring etc; it is exceptionally mind numbing if you are disinterested. And when it comes to disabilities such as ADHD (which Bart is often quoted to have), not understanding something goes hand in hand with disinterest and apathy to the topic. In the episode, Bart displays major disinterest in the history lesson, and when studying struggles to read the textbook without daydreaming.
Thus his response to being told if he fails the make-up test he will be held back a year makes him commit to studying the text to pass the test. This is all he does for the remainder of the episode - study. And in the end, even though it is one of his best scores, it still isn't enough to overcome the dreaded "F". His reaction to yet another F is what sells it. He has done everything he can, everything he can think of to do what is expected of him, and he still failed. And the thought of never being able to succeed on his own terms crushes him. He can do so many different things; play sports, skateboard, come up with elaborate and convoluted schemes and pranks. He is by no means dumb, but he just doesn't get school as an institution. As a result he is labeled an underachiever and a slacker, when he just doesn't get school like others do.
His breakdown is not played for laughs, comedy or even for a bit gag from earlier in the episode, it is 100% drama: he is crushed by the fact he can never be as good as the other students and perform as the school expects him to, and Krabapple's reaction is one of genuine concern. Originally full of sarcasm over having to spend another year teaching him, she quickly switches to a caring authority figure trying to comfort him. And once he demonstrates his applied knowledge on George Washington, she realizes just what the issue is; it's not him, but the school and education in general. He doesn't learn like everyone else, but has his own methods. And because SHE failed him and not the other way around, by not figuring it out sooner, she gives him extra credit because he has the knowledge, he just doesn't test well.
And ultimately, this is the whole issue with the education system, all the way back in 1990! Over 30 years ago they were saying that tests don't work for everyone, ultimately some people learn in unorthodox ways. The ultimate moral here is not for students to constantly try to succeed in schoolwork for the purpose of testing, but rather succeed in school for the purpose of learning material. A student demonstrating their abilities is far more worthwhile than a test paper.

Good explanation but ADHD ain't no disability

    • @TelaniGrey
      @TelaniGrey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

@@Wizardaron On the contrary, it is.
ADHD, while exceptionally common (8.4% in kids, 2.5% in adults), presents itself differently and in different degrees in various individuals.
I should know. I have a diagnosis for ADHD. For me, I am much like Bart. The difference being, I test exceptionally well. But I can't focus on anything I don't care about. I just kinda tend to passively absorb information.
This led my parents to medicate me for about three years, before I decided to stop taking the meds. Because I didn't view it as a disability, although it was affecting my ability to concentrate on things I really didn't care about (e.g. school and homework). I got into college for HVAC anyway. Struggled in the academic courses (Math 101, English 101. Interpersonal Communications actually interested me, so I didn't struggle there.) but thrived in my lab classes. I knew my shit. I just hated the paperwork.
Got my degree, and am working to get out into the field.
ADHD is a disability. And traditional schooling isn't for everyone. I could see Bart going into a trade school and thriving there, as it would allow him to work with his hands, actively doing something considered worthwhile to him, instead of being stuck at a desk doing papers.

    • @ron4tron
      @ron4tron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@TelaniGrey I also have ADHD and wanna say that I also tested very well, for everything that remotely retained my interest (all literary based subjects more or less fell under this umbrella, but none of the arts or math).
The thing is, I never knew I had ADHD until my last year of highschool. My ability to focus deteriorated as I had depression for a while and my motivation for everything was lost, my ability to think clearly largely nullified-like cloudy thoughts. School didn’t work out, and I’m still trying to get back to where I was. Felt a lot like Bart near the end lmao.
ADHD is a “disability,” but I think it can be a strength in some ways. It’s just a differently wired brain. The main thing to me, and for many with ADHD, is the urgency of having to understand yourself. For some less so, but for me, I really needed to know why I was the way I was. Some can bring out their talents in ways others could hardly imagine, some lag behind overall, and some are very capable in only particular ways. But ultimately, all are far more capable if they could only learn to understand and manage their minds.
Bit of a rambling here lol, but I think Bart could very easily be capable of performing exceptionally in tests. Does he necessarily “need to,” to get by in life, no, but I see it as more than likely had he found ways to pull it out of himself.
      *Oh, and grats btw!

As a 16 year old boy with ADHD, I genuinely relate to Bart here:
Once online classes began, I stopped taking my meds, thinking they wouldn't be useful anymore since I wasn't going out as much, as a result my attentiveness dramatically dropped, I would often open other tabs to watch anime or see memes while the teacher was explaining.
Eventually, I was in an arabic class that I had a realization, I barely knew anything about it, as an Iraqi, I had to know Arabic, but I was never able to due to my ADHD
Seeing how easily the other classmates spoke compared to me and how far behind I was in Arabic caused me to have a complete emotional breakdown, I spent the rest of that online class crying.
Before that: I had a science exam, and I once again barely knew anything in it, I also had to submit my work and equations, which made things more stressful, the moment the exam was done, I threw away the clearly wrong equations and spent the rest of that Thursday completely miserable.
Eventually, I had another science quiz, and once again I flunked it, I then asked my mom for the meds, and once she asked why, I broke down in front of her, telling her how much of a failure I was, and how I have so much trouble concentrating, she gave me my meds and told me to take the day off for now, so I did.
I am so lucky to have such supportive parents, and I have started taking my meds again, which have helped me a lot in school.
That feeling, the feeling that you are a complete failure, is genuinely painful, it feels like a large rock on your heart, it's choking, and it's excruciating.

it sucks the most because i try so hard to finish whatever she wants me to do but i can't because i cant focus, i cant do work, i cant pick up more than 5 things in my room.
i'm impatient, and my attention span is worse than a fly. my mom has the chance to help me with it, but she doesn't because it 'doesn't matter', if it doesnt matter then why does she keep on yelling at me about it,,???

I relate to this right here. I struggle with adhd too. Similar things would happen to me even in public school even with meds at times and I'd beat myself down for it. I might honestly need to see a doctor for my experience at school. I had some teachers telling me stop being lazy or try a little more. How could I do that when I was clearly depressed and had to deal with 3 deaths in the family at once. 2 family members I was extremely close with. 2 of them were on the other side of the country and one I felt I didnt do enough for. Even after getting over it sorta I still struggled with the amount of homework that was given + the work I never finished in class. You can guess how bad it got. Not only that but I had my phone taken for a year. Was yelled at by my dad each day who didnt understand why I was failing so badly and at points said very hurtful things. A friend took me to their house near the end and started helping me but i was still pulled and transferred to another school. I was so angry at him but i feel it did help in some ways. It was online school and i genuinely did better because i could replay the classes and also listen to music during class. Now I've graduated and living life i guess. But I'm glad i made it out of school.

I was like that for my high school physics class. I was terrible in STEM topics - for some reason, I just didn't find them interesting, or perhaps I was better with words than numbers and diagrams. For that physics class, just for taking the final - all you had to do was show up and get marked in - you got a slight curve on your grade. And even with that curve, I ended up with a 46. Admittedly, I might not have studied as much as I could have. But I've been on both sides. I took a college math class, and it was the hardest I had ever worked in a math class, perhaps in any class. And I pulled off a B. That's one of the grades I'm the proudest of, because I know I actually earned it.

A D is considered passing up through high school in most places.

It's crazy when you go back to the early seasons of the Simpsons and see Bart and Lisa characterised as actual children instead of undersized adults

The simpsons really was at one time one of the best shows on television. Scenes like this were why

As a kid that grew up with adhd in school and my downfall in grades was through middleschool and highschool I know exactly how Bart feels. Failure became so much for me that I just gave up, fell into a depression, and stopped putting effort. I was constantly called lazy. It was like why try if i fail anyways? Nothing will change. I cant focus at home in such a loud noisy house, and at school theres too many things going on in class anyways. My IEP teachers soon found that sitting there and watching me and reading the questions to me keeps me engaged. Not only that but I'd zone out so much and couldnt keep focus cause of it leaving me in this sort of paralysis state in real life. Sometimes i needed the questions asked in a different way and then I knew the answer. I'm not dumb, my brain just works differently than others and I've come to terms with it. Plus, once an adhd episode starts it's so difficult to stop. I really think schools should do more for those with mental disorders.

No one gets how awful this feels until it happens them. I failed 3 papers and 9 tests in my first year of uni and studied 8 hours a day after quitting my job and all my sports to focus on it. Watching this makes me cry because it’s such vivid flashbacks of checking scores and feeling so dumb

Having been there countless times in my school career and almost being held back 3 times between middle and high school, despite studying for hours and hours a day for weeks and trying my hardest but still failing, the hoplessness of feeling youll never be good enough. This just hits increadibly close to home for me
If by chance anyone sees this and is going through the same thing. Don't let your grades tell you how smart you are or define self worth.

As someone who never knew what it felt like to get higher than a B in school until college, and someone who got so many F’s that I’d legitimately thought the “F” in my name was just a summary for my report cards, this hit WAY too close to home.

Hits harder when you experience something like this in real life, you try so hard and don’t do well
