    Brubeck would hold Rodrigo y Gabriela in the highest esteem - he would have enjoyed your brilliant take on Desmond’s TAKE FIVE. An inspired choice. Muchas gracias. 🌹

    These two took Ireland by storm around the turn of the century. They started off busking on Dublin's Grafton St and very quickly grew to playing some big venues. I was the lighting engineer for them ca. 2002/2003/2004 at The Half Moon club in Cork and saw them a few times around that period. Incredible musicians.

      I was visiting Ireland, Dublin and Cork, and was amazed at the level the street musicians play at. There are these two for example and one I bought a beer after listening to him for an hour. He had played back up guitar for a bunch of big names. And, side bar, I worked in technical theater for 30 years here in the states. . . Lighting, T.D. Carpenter. . .
      But this woman in this video "Plays with the blood", as Rodrigo De Souza says in Mozart in the Jungle.

    Well done. A lot of mentions of Brubeck here, but let’s not forget Paul Desmond wrote this beautiful piece.

      There's an interview with Dave Brubeck where he talks about the composition of Take Five. Apparently, Brubeck wrote the chord sequence and Desmond jammed over the top to try to work out a melody; eventually, Desmond hit on the tune we all know. When it came to attributing composition, however, Desmond was insistent that it should be to him alone, and Brubeck let him have it! (I believe Desmond was a difficult man, and the relationship between him and Brubeck was often strained.) Of course, the tune is the really great thing about it, so perhaps it's fair enough.

    • @kjcorder
      @kjcorder 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brubeck has notoriety for "odd" time signatures. Especially like in Blue Rondo a La Turk and take five was technically released/recorded as a Dave brubeck quartet song (of which Paul Desmond was part of the quartet)

    • @brochestedbs
      @brochestedbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MrBarney2107 The version I heard Dave tell was that he had asked Paul to write a tune in 5 and Paul said he had a couple of themes but could get no further. Dave then helped him to organise the themes into the number we know today. Dave let him have the composer's rights as he (Dave) had written the other stuff on Time Out. Incidentally there are tapes of the rehearsals of T5 for the album where they were having all sorts of difficulties playing it for some while until the mastered it - see Philip Clark's biography.

    • @gustafsone
      @gustafsone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I sadly never got to see him play and I'm not sure why considering he was very much still active when I was an aspiring jazz musician back in school.
      I also think he would be absolutely thrilled to know that probably one of the first charts that high school bands across the country/world play is "Take Five".
      It's a very accessible odd-meter tune to play and good for learning (albeit probably at a much slower tempo than intended).

    • @nakedhombre

      Excuse me, not timeless but 5 / 4 time. Also ironical that this song, “Take 5” first appeared in the Dave Brubeck Quartet album titled: TIME OUT

    Conocí a Rodrigo en 1997-98? en un canal de Tv donde los dos trabajábamos. En una sesión de trabajo él hizo una pieza musical para una secuencia que yo le pedí. Me impresionó su entrega y su compromiso. Después me invitó a ver tocar a su banda. Gabriela llevaba una playera azul y roja de “Superchica” (SG) y a mi me impresionó que tocaran Metal, lo cual no era muy lo mío pero pasé una agradable noche escuchando a R&G . Pasaron los días y Rodrigo me dijo que renunciaría al trabajo y que se iba del país “Nos vamos a Irlanda” y nos despedimos. Años pasaron y hoy ellos son Rockstars. Y lo más importante: son grandes seres humanos 🤟🏻🎶 Rock On!
