When I worked for AFP I so many front page shots with my 2 F5's!!! Washington Post, USA Today , Boston Globe etc. My F5 was bullet proof. All my overseas assignments all F5. Never ever failed!!! I have so many F5 stories. Love to share them one day
I recently got an F5, and have been amazed with it. It is so well built and has so many "modern" features, that put it way ahead of most other older film cameras. It is also quite cool that despite being made in the 90s, it can use most of the modern F mount lenses, along with the older ones including the manual AI-s ones. I look forward to seeing what you capture with the camera!
Never had the experience of an F5 as I had already converted to digital with the D3S in 2010 skipping the F5 entirely. Glad you had some nice words to say about this monster.
I remember seeing the F5 for the first time in the Lost Word: Jurassic Park. Really cool camera. Looks like yours was probably manufactured around late 2002/early 2003. Enjoy!
Oh Man! It’s so nice I recently bought a mint F5 from EBay Japan. Shot a couple rolls already and can’t wait to see results! Actually ZWade I use rechargeable Eneloop batteries. Am looking forward to what you shoot with it!
I own the F100 and it sounds like a manly camera when you press the shutter. It was the F5's little brother from the same generation. I love the way it feels in the hand.
Loved my F5 sooo much that I had two of them for editorial work with magazines back in the late 90's / early 2000's. One thing with the frames per second, alkaline or lithium AA's may only get you 7.4 fps or less. The dedicated Nikon MN-30 Ni-MH batteries will get you a solid 8 fps. I'm not sure about Ni-MH AA's. Happy snapping!
F5:owner here and I love it! I'm fully invested in Nikon Z but kept all my f mount DSLR lenses just so I can use them on the F5. Its crazy that I can use all my G lenses on this beast. Pop some Kodak Ektar in it and you'll likely capture the sharpest 35mm film images you've ever shot 😊
I love that camera so much, I managed a camera specialty store and a young lawyer came in asking me honestly what I would recommend. I sold him the F5 and a 105/ 2.0 DFC, I was so envious, decades later I bought my own F5 but had to return it the next day because of battery corrosion. I’m still getting another one soon, I do have an F100 and D90 and FM, as well as several other Nikon bodies f F3 F4 F90 F801 etc, previously
Still have my F5 and an F100, and that 1005 segment meter the F5 (and F6) have is the way to go with slide film. It's a reliable beast of a camera with all of the modern features, I love shooting it when I can afford the weight and its tendency to get fewer rolls out of 8 batteries than my F100 gets out of 4.
I always check on YT to see if anyone posts new videos about the F5, I have one in mint condition, but at this point am looking to upgrade it with a data back. You will love your F5. There is only 1 film camera I hold to be more valuable but for sentimental reasons, that would be the pentax k1000
I bought an F5 in 1997 and kept it until 2005. Truth be told, I preferred the F100 when it came out which I still have because weight was more important to me than the vertical grip. The F5 was awesome but I lost a fortune on it because it bridged the film/digital transition. 😁
I still use my F5 on the regular. While the FM3a is my favourite film camera in 2024, the F5 is right up there. The fact the focus points do not illuminate, like on the later F100, is something to get used to in using it. It is my black and white, Kodak Tri X beast.
One of these days, if you have time to play, I have a couple more of those legends. A pristine F2S, and of course the FM/MD12 and a host of Nikkormats and well worn F bodies. The F5 was an odd one for me. It was a leap forward from the F4/s/e in tech, but the amount of electronic integration was reaching a point that the modular system was going to have to go away. When I could use one, i couldn't afford it, when I could afford it later, i didn't need it.
@ZWadePhoto having that wider spread of focal points is genuinely helpful at times. I got used to single point and just pausing on the shutter button to focus and recompose. I guess old film habits are going to be with me forever. This is another reason true flatfield lenses were not always desirable in practical use.
I owned one back in the day. It is an amazing camera, but, it is enormous, and that put me off in the end. I use Olympus OM3/4Tis now, and I got some mint unused examples from Japan and love using them. Always was a Nikon guy before though
One of the two best Nikon autofocus affordable the other being the f100 it’s little brother which even put some shadow on the pro body. They are beautiful , far better built and finish than the f90x and more elegant than the f4 with all its knobs that I find not so easy to work with but got better compatibility with the old lenses . We can nowadays buy them for 1/5- 1/10 of their initial price so let’s go !!!
I take it in my strides @Orion. I already have the Nikon Zf, and will get the D850 this January (in the sales), because I have some Zeiss Otus lenses to go with it. Plus, I want one for its tested reliably. I return to Japan late 2025, and will go hunting for a mint F6 then. Slow and steady; stay the course and we'll get them.
I purchased my F5 brand new in 2006 from Ritz Camera and has been my main camera for weddings since, it's' even gone to Mexico with me a few times. I picked up an F6 two years ago, but doesn't instill the same confidence in the hands, even with the additional booster grip. I slap the 50 1.8G on the F5 and the 24 2.8D on the F6, soon to be the 24 1.8G.... again. PRO TIP: use an external light meter, the built in one is not that good. Tends to underexpose. In my opinion, there's a lot of bad work showcased on TH-cam of photos taken with the F5. My entire portfolio was taken with the F5 to give you a better idea of the images it produces. ALSO! If anyone knows someone who is selling the two front rubber pieces of the F5 hit me up!
