- Red Alert 2 is 20 years old this year - and it's still regarded as one of the best, if not THE best Command & Conquer game in the series history. While we all hope to see it remastered like it's predecessor, that may never materialize, so we might be stuck with what we've got. So, let's see if what we've got is still worth playing in 2020.

Unit veterancy was actually first introduced in Tiberian Sun, not Red Alert 2. When playing through the campaign, you will notice some units have two bars or a star at the start of the mission. If you can micro your units well enough, some of your units will eventually get promoted. But the game doesn't notify you of this in anyway and the bonuses are not really something you would write home about. I believe at max rank they get passive health regen and a small damage bonus but I could be wrong. I never explored how veterancy works in TS extensively.
When RA2 rolled in, the veterancy system was streamlined. It was easier to rank up your units and bonuses were much more rewarding compared to TS.
Ah my bad! For some reason I don't remember it from TS, maybe it had less of an effect. Thanks for pointing it out!
Zade It does have less of an effect in TS there’s might be subtle different there but in RA2 it a lot more noticeable especially the elite rank
RA2 is the one where they have a passive health regen. Tib Sun's vet system is... weird. They get specific perks at elite, but never elaborates what they are. Some of them are helpful, such as infantry auto-scattering (and thus rendering them nigh-invulnerable to crushing), to objectively usel, such as the Wolverine, whose perk makes them immune to Tiberium veins! ...a feature it already had regardless of rank. (Also some elites explode upon death. Because that's what you want your hard-earned elites to do.)
Also they have to kill x10 their unit value as opposed to RA2's x3 (or x6, I can't recall). Not an easy task.
The answer is yes you should. It’s still a great game and hopefully will be the next remastered C&C games will be Red Alert 2 and Tiberium sun and the firestorm expansion

Although I’d never do well against another person due to having to have my base look nice I still love playing it against the AI.
Also it led me into getting mental omega which if you haven’t tried you should just leave the foehn alone until you’re familiar

I'm exactly the same! I also love to take on a few hard AI at once and take my time with the battle, I just feel like I'd get absolutely trounced online haha
yay! a fellow individual who gets into good looking bases. I enjoyed making a gauntlet for my enemy AI to get through. I wish I could have a brutal AI that would allow me a head start though just so I could really put my defenses to the test.
I never play against other people too. I've always been a casual player. But I do love playing against Hard AI in any RTS games. Currently playing Company of Heroes 2 PvE (players vs AI)
Same here! I never want to rush when playing Red Alert. My campaigns always last an hour or so. I take my time and i don't want to lose a unit as much as possible. :)
Anyone playing this, please note you can go into the games folder and edit ini files, entering 1280 x 720 or anything else you feel suits best your monitor and you are golden.
It's painful to watch the video in 4:3 because the game supports wide screen from the box.
Same goes for Tiberium Sun.
Just type hires in the main menu, and they will open up the option for high resolution
I have a problem that the cutscene will go to the bottom right side of the screen on normal resolution and on 1920 x 1080, It will be on middle of the screen but tiny af. Any solution please?

@@theeyeofmonitor6841 There is a line beneath the resolution that should read StretchMovies=yes, but I found it works only in Yuri's Revenge while the vanilla game just centers it while in the original 640x480 resolution.
The mods and map editor were a blast. I used the map editor to create 'The Ridge.' I raised elevation from top to bottom of the map then populated it with neutral units from all factions. Then I covered blank spots with trees. On each side of the map were on place to deploy Con Yards. To help were massive ore fields. There were con yards to capture. In order for the players to attack each other they would have to cut through The Ridge. It took masses of troops on each side to get close enough to start taking units out, especially since there were a lot of snipers. It was just like watching Pickett's Charge. You just saw you troops melt away. Frequent saves were necessary because computers of the day weren't powerful enough. I wish they would update RA2 and Yuri's Revenge because computers now have the power to handle that map.
I would have paid 20 dollars just to play this game again. Most of the bugs of the first game are fixed in this outing. It surprises me they didn't remaster this over the first one, as they ported the pathfinding and lack of attack move in the first one into the remake. This fixed all that.
Wait, what is an attack move? I keep seeing it mentioned all over the place.
@@CaveyMoth Attack move is giving an order to an unit to walk/drive across the map and let it attack anything along it's path. This is frequently used with Attack Dogs in RA2 so they scout the map while still attacking enemy units to protect itself.

They need to release a "Command & Conquer Remastered Collection 2" with Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 with Firestorm and Yuri's Revenge. I can't believe it still hasn't been announced yet.
I would love to see a remaster of the RA2 games. While I agree that the style holds up very well today, it would be so amazing to see the same treatment given as with its predecessor.

Still the best campaign in the series. I can still remember playing this on my old potato home pc, back in the day where getting a legit pc copy was next to impossible in my country.
9:25 Attack dolphins are very much a real thing, although they are mostly used for reconnaissance with detectors attached to their fins. They were used for clearing mines back in 2003 Persian Gulf too. They were developed during the cold war and have been in service ever since and Red Alert 2 is all about cold war vibes.

Cool story about the dolphins; they're actually based on a current military program - the US Navy Marine Mammal Program. Dolphins are actually TRAINED by the US Navy to hunt mines etc. These ones just have a sonar gun attached. The squids are mind-controlled because of Yuri.

While Red Alert 1, has a dear place in my heart, which I played over and over. Red alert 2 is probably my favourite of the series. All the fun ways you can "cheese" the campaign-missions and the incredible ham in the story are a immensely enjoyable.

Omega makes RA 2 even more of a masterpiece and what RTS could be
Mental Omega is the hardest RTS campaign iv ever beaten on hard, no doubt (at least to the most recent missons). That whole campaign is insane where they take the story. EXAMPLE (spoiler)
The Soviets winning RA2s campaign and rename Washington DC to Stalingrad. The Allies have basically lost exept for the UK.Yuris invasion begins worldwide and you have to get the soviet commander (You the players body) out of Stalingrad.
Hi, umm.... There are so many channels of RA2 gameplay, which have more detailed and broader resolution and does not show infantry vs elite tank destroyer (infantry always wins it) :D However, thanks for this video, it was nice to hear arguments shared by so many in CNCnet community
Thanks for watching - and yeah I totally agree. Inherently because of the variety of games I cover I unfortunately can't get as in depth as a lot of dedicated channels can. I hope I can maybe bridge the gap between knowing nothing, and knowing something! If people like it, they can find the channels that get more granular than I ever could
Dolphins make sense since the game unit roster if very much inspired by the more insane ideas for weapons that were actually in development. (as well as a lot of weapons that were never being developed but rumoured to be during the Cold War). And yes. USA actually did try to develop dolphin soldiers to mine ships and such. It is actually one of the more realistic units in the game in that way. ;)

we need a remastered version of RA2 Yuri's Revenge ASAP. this was my very first RTS game and still my favorite. GOAT. I hope EA will release a remastered version in 2022.
gameplay is very cool and the BEST part in my opinion are the tech buildings.
whenever you capture a tech building, you can actually expand your base very quickly and also defend them. tech buildings give you so much flexibility and perks.
hospitals heal infantry.
machine shops repair vehicles.
oil derricks give you cash.

There's actually a famade version of an red alert 2 mixed with red alert 3 units and new missions and a remastered campaign. I wanna say red alert 2 is great, but the community had an idea on expanding it even more and created 'Mental Omega'. I think I need to take a look at that. Hope it I understand all units and abilities. (PS. Played Red alert 2 for 9 years by now and I think it's beautiful as it is, no matter if it gets remastered or not.)

After some difficulties with origin and getting it to work I booted it up last year. Was so much fun.
The build progression and tech tree not being clear without looking at the manual is legitimate criticism. I mean not everyone keeps paper books for 20 years- things get lost and so on.Other RTS games throughout the years have made tech progression more clear with tooltips and other ingame means.

This is the best RTS game ever made, red alert 2 and it’s expansion yuris revenge can never be beaten. A red alert 2 remaster should be mandated to happen. Been playing this game on and off for probably close to 17 years now. It’s a game that never gets old, the campaigns are fantastic and the skirmish battles have endless possibilities. A remaster would sell like hot cakes and easily could be a top esport.

Man i played c & c and red alert since 1995. Although my favourites are red alert 2, generals, tiberium wars but i do like the other entries too. I also loved the fmw movies in tiberian sun and firestorm, Would have loved to see what the story would have been for C & C 3 if it would have been released sooner. Also its a little sad renegade never got the love from EA that it deserved. Imo if they would have done a joint venture between Dice and the Renegade devs the result could have been amazing for renegade 2.
AOE II, Starcraft 2, RA II and Supreme Commander are all worthy of the 'timeless' tag.

red alert 2 is way ahead of its time concerning graphics its simple amd soest rely on effects and visuals and all that stuff that most gamers don't care about. ra2 is by far the top rts game made till now. we ll c in the future if an rts can match it in its pleasant graphics and Simplicity.
Good thing about C&C: Red Alert 2 (unlike some other titles) is that game itself does not take itself seriously at all.
Edit: yes I'm looking at you, Homefront (2011, Kaos Studios, THQ)...
If you looking for a middle point between classic C&C sprite games and modern 3d ones, I think that you are missing the piece, which is Emperor: Battle For Dune -- it fits for a perfect middle better than Red Alert 2 imho. Not only 3d, but change of total vibe as well, with its experiments in implementing new game mechanics, etc.
Just FYI, Empire at War was done by a great part or the full team of C&C after they got bought by the slave masters of EA.
It is legit to consider EaW a heir to classic C&C, since it had the same guiding gameplay principles and dev team.
RA2 and TibSun +DLC remaster could be great, who knows maybe it will be competitive.
Would love to see Red Alert 4 with modern mechanics (like Company of Heroes).

Actually, the statement around 12:30 is somewhat incorrect. I would say it is unknown whether parts of the soviet campaign are canon. All of the allied definitely is, however the soviet campaing ends with you becoming premier of the whole world, so that definitely isn't canon. It probably is possible that some missions are canon, as they don't really clash with the allied campaign. Same goes for yuri's revenge.
edit: unit veterancy as far as I am aware goes like this
veterancy improves all around stats, like damage, speed, armour, etc. , it requires I think three times the amount of the base cost of the unit (for example a conscript would have to kill units worth 300 credits, since they cost only 100 credits to produce
elite status improves these stats even further, also adding automatic health regen and completely changing the units main weapon, for example, the three factions battle tanks either fire two or three rounds when elite, the soviet ore miners machine gun changes into a cannon, the soviet dreadnoughts basicaly fire mini nukes. Some units change completely, for example, regular and veteran tesla troopers cannot fire over walls, however, elites can. Regular chrono troopers can fire over walls, elites cannot. It requires 6x the unit's base cost when promoting from regular tier and 3x from veteran tier (I think)

Edit: old games like RA2 are very hard to record cause they aren't windowed, which is why most recording software will show black screen when you try recording
How are you playing it? It was one of my childhood games and I would love to play the campaign again. Unfortunately whenever I load it up on windows 10 I get a laggy jittery mess. (Both an old disk copy and the origin ones)
I should also say that the multiplayer mod works fine just not the campaign's :(

You may need to download an external config but once you get RA2 at 1080p or your native resolution the graphics look so much cleaner.
The cia tried to train dolphins to deliver mines in the 60s.
But as a bizarre side effect, or experiment.
Dolphin beastiality happened.

I basically bought the C&C remaster hoping they'd remaster this one and Generals.

Red Alert 2 is really enjoyable from start to finish. While I do not think it is quite as unique as Starcraft in terms of different races and playstyles and that the story is not as polished as Starcraft's, Red Alert 2 still manages to be fun and hilarious :D!!!!

The 2D format is pure nostalgia, and I promise, if C&C red alert 2 / Yuris.. are coming again, remastered in there 2D format, with more missions, and more specials and more KI, I'm ready to pay 40€ only for this version, CD or download ORIGINAL from the producers!!!!

I just set the resolution of Yuri's revenge to 1080p and im very satisfied with the graphics.
So I haven't watched the whole video, but why did you only show 4:3 low res footage? You can easily play Red Alert 2 in full HD and it looks beautiful. I understand you were probably trying to capture the old school look, but this video is about playing it in 2020 and it doesn't do it justice imo.

There was unit veterancy in Tiberian Sun although it did not make much difference. It wasn't nearly as good as in Red Alert 2.
In my opinion, Yuri is THE BEST villain in fiction. Period.

Red Alert 2 was the best rts made back then. Two campaigns, skirmish, a killer soundtrack, different units and loads of FMVs. While RA1 was my first C&C, RA2 will always be on top for me.

I just watched a speed run and my anxiety was through the roof when he sold off construction yards and half his base every mission.

Having been born after the Cold War, this game was my first encounter with the Soviet Union. When I later learned they didn't actually have Kirovs, Apocalypse Tanks or the Iron Curtain Device I was sorely disappointed.

Fun fact: dolphins are used by the real US Navy, for underwater demolition, bomb disposal, and scouting.
They were used in my city during Soviet time when it was military closed one for very...intresting reason. Dolphins would approach enemy divers and hit them using there nose with a freaken poison needle!

Mass air and sometimes only uragan can bea't mental omega Al in skirmish...Even on mental...Never beat with Yuri on mental
@@Nuuk_Nuke_Nook I meant the Mental Omega mod, it literally takes the dial up to 11. AI has gotten several buffs and I cannot stress enough how difficult it is most of the time, I have times where I just slip by the level almost losing, Vanilla RA2 is *REALLY* easy though, I've gone up against 4 Brutals and won, still gonna practice to go for 1v7
Edit: Did I mention there's a *Mental* difficulty? Yeah, take the pain of Easy mode and crank it up to 50.

Red Alert 2. This is the VERY first game I ever played, and I was hooked on gaming ever since. Even the installation of the game was iconic, from the disc that is. I legitimately thought I had only like 20 seconds to input my game key in the installation screen lest I want to be liquidated by seals. (I was very young at the time.) I unfortunately misplaced the old discs... I did buy the Ultimate Collection from Origin, and personally, I think it is a GREAT deal. It has yet another game which shaped my childhood, C&C Generals and Zero Hour. Proud to say I am still playing both Red Alert 2 and C&C Generals til this day, but I have been running into constant display issues and random crashes with Red Alert 2 in particular.. I really hope that there would be a proper remaster for this game in the future.
Red alert 2 was one of the first games i ever played, i think my mom pirated it for me (i know, i know) i didn't understand shit because i couldn't speak or read english.
In one of the first missions as the soviets you had to repair some bridges, and you needed an engineer for that.
I had no idea what the word engineer meant and to this day i remember running out in our garden and asking my dad what the word engineer meant, he told me it was a guy with a yellow hat, finished the mission afterwards.
