  • ATF 'drain and fill' on the ZF22 (ZF4HP22) gearbox that was also used in 1980's cars such as BMW, Chevrolet, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Lotus, Maserati, Peugeot and of course the Volvo 740, 740 & 940.

    UPDATE! I decided to go a bit further and continue servicing the transmission, part 2 coming soon!

    Have done several drain and refill with my 940's AW70 gearbox. I cheated and used a 12 volt suction pump. Got out around a litre at a time. Done this twice in around 2 weeks. Will do again soon. Fitted new front suspension and shock absorbers. New SKF water pump and oil and filter change. Just a front wheel alignment and then MOT the end of the month.

    I did a complete flush and fill on my AW70 transmission 2 years ago now and have experienced zero problems since. (No more late shifts in cold weather with a cold transmission.) You can't go wrong with the occasional F&F!

    Just like my old XJ. The first time I drained fluid it looked just like yours, almost chocolate colour. It needed 3 flushes and several days and drives for the fluid to look decent again.

    Perhaps you also change the oilfilter in the gear box! Dirt Will come loose with the fresh oil , so with a fresh filter your gearbox will perform better! And i agree, that a slow change of the gearbox oil is better than a flush ! Nice job! 👍🏻

    It is something many people forget to do. But very important 👍

    Best way, change, add, run it and do it again. Unless you remove the trransmisson, youll always have some in the torque converter.

    Hello fella… I’ve just bought a 28 year old 940 low pressure turbo wagon automatic. 23 years ago I had the ultimate Volvo. A 760 turbo intercooler saloon. In metallic gold. But it gets better. It had a factory fitted aero design body kit and spoiler and was pre catalytic so 182bhp. Ive never seen another one like it . I didn’t know what I had at the time but I miss it. Hopefully this 940 turbo will come close when I’ve “adjusted the boost “ we’re still bonding. I’ve done the cam belt and seals which it approved of . Then I gunked the engine bay and pressure washed it donuts spotless…. It’s now pulled a face and refuses to start in protest of having is grubby bits cleaned…. Dizzy cap on order 🤣

    I like dropping the pan cleaning the magnet & new filter! Going to look at a 1990 740 Volvo with 4,000klm next week sitting in a garage for 10yrs crazy!

    I've done a 'drain and fill' of my 740's AW71 transmission every couple of years since I've owned it, and it seems very happy. I've never done a flush, as it sounds like a real hassle, and as you say, flushing can do more harm than good.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nice, glad to know it's working out. How much fluid do you normally get out?

    • @shepshepherd
      @shepshepherd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Involvod About 4 litres of fresh D2 is enough to get the fluid level to where it should be on the dipstick, so I'm guessing that I manage to drain that amount. I might get more out, as I'm in the habit of leaving the drain plug out for several hours before I do the refill.

    Saw a video once where the person did a flush. He disconnected the line that goes to the radiator, let it run and filled the same amount up with fresh as it kept running.

    The old stuff does look quite dark brown in comparison to the new stuff plus new stuff looks a lot thinner! Good idea to drain a few times.

    I do a complete flush on the AW71 in my '94 940Turbo every 60,000 miles with DexMerc III. It has had no side effects in my 14 years of ownership.

  • @Saaketti
    @Saaketti 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Color change is due to dirt getting in the oil and because oil is getting older. That red is still very good condition. The thing why it looks dark in the can is because in the can you have it lot more in the same spot. Instead of dropping it down from the drain hole. There is lot of kilometers to go with that oil to get black. And there is levels of the blackness and how it smells. 😆

    Great to see this job being done, did this job myself 2 weeks ago and ran into a problem the previous owner or mechanic rang the thread on the sump plug and when i got to it plug wouldn't undo once loosened and then would not tighten,had to remove pan and get it re threaded and new sump plug got that job done and now have a speed sensor problem in the diff 🙄🛠️.

    hello mate, just wanted to say i love your channel and also partly you convinced me to get a 740, which i'll be hopefully picking up next week. what engine oil are you running in these?

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Oh thanks, congrats on the purchase! I normally run 10w40, but in my current 2 I'm using 15w40 to try and alleviate the cold piston slap a bit! Liqui Moly brand as it's good quality but not super expensive

    Exactly what I do on my Aisin TF80 6-speed on my XC70, can get about 4 litres out the sump, then replace every year with the oil change. Bit of hassle though as you have to use VIDA to read the gearbox temperature to correctly set the level

      I'm always a bit put off by that and having to fill from underneath etc, it's quite nice having a dipstick / fill tube 😄

    I know nothing, but honestly I'd think changing the filter would be equally, if not more important than changing the fluid. You have no idea if its plugged full

    Hi @involvod. Great videos. I'm new into volvos. I bought a 960 from 1993 some time ago. The car was sitting for around 12 years. The transmission filter gets clogged with what appears to be clutch material. I cleaned it and after 100km it clogged again. Have you experienced something like this? can the transmission be saved? I've already changed the fluid one time (not full flush only the pan). Maybe I can use an additive? Any help will be much appreciated.

    Hi, My 1986 740 has a 5 speed manual gearbox, so would You know what is the best oil to use when I change the gearbox oil. That is assuming that You do actually change the gearbox oil as it is very vague in the Haynes manual. Anyway Hope You are well and little baby is being good. Best wishes Dee

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I personally used ATF type F in my manual car, but there are a few options and lots of conflicting opinions online, I did a video on changing the fluid in my 240 and here's what someone commented which sums it up;
      "Volvo used to sell an oil for M45, M46, M47 and M90 with part no. 1161645 (discontinued as of a couple years ago) which was a 75W GL-4 manual transmission fluid. Closest to this you can get your hands on today is Redline MTL which in it's specsheet claims is equivalent to Volvos 1161645. I use this in my M90 and it did improve the shift quality.
      That being said ATF works, that's what Volvo used to spec for these gearboxes according to the user manuals and Haynes books. However in 1982 they release a service bulletin calling for 10W30 motor oil except for in M46 gearboxes before MY 1982.
      So through the production of these cars the recommendation from Volvo has in chronological order been ATF > Motor Oil > Volvo oil 1161645, and thats why you'll find conflicting information online, because they were all right at some point."

      Well spotted! I'm trying to look into that, I can hear the (relatively new) main fuel pump surge in time with it so I might try another one just in case 🤔
