Richie Sambora used a talkbox on this song, which gave it a very distinctive sound. A talkbox is an electronic device that allows a guitar player to make distorted sounds with his mouth.
A talkbox receives the guitarist's speaker signal, but uses a horn driver (looks like a speaker magnet but has a very small diaphragm) with a tube attached to the front, instead of the big 'horn' shaped metal sound director. Pure analogue - not digital. The guitarist's other speaker cabinets need to lose their signal when the talkbox is in effect, and a microphone picks up the sound.
There have been a few guitarists to have used the talkbox over the years.... Peter Frampton was known for it... It is just like putting the speaker for the guitar in your mouth and use that sound for "talking" after a fashion and shaping the sound in cool ways.
@@aslakrantakokko5347 I keep asking for that one in the hopes they will try it... The 80’s, fueled by Jack Daniel’s, a white powdery substance and the purple cans of Aquanet Hairspray. They were the best of times. Until they weren’t. I have a few vague memories that I’ll cherish forever, one of which happened on the way home from a Bon Jovi concert, but I don’t think my body could handle that life again. I traded the hairspray for beard oil and the white powder and Jack for really good single barrel bourbon. Side note, that “woah woah” sound is made by putting a funnel with a tube attached over a speaker which the guitar plays through, running the tube to your mouth next to a microphone and modifying your mouth shape as you play. The sound of the guitar reverberates in your mouth.

@Brad and Lex - one thing you guys dont realize that you're doing, you're helping make music more accessible for individuals like myself who have a hearing problem. You see, Ive heard a ton of these songs that you're now listening to when I was younger but never knew who sang them, and all the smaller details. Now with you going over the older stuff, Im now able to find who's who so to speak and dig em up to learn more. For perspective, for us deaf folks, we have a hard time even distinguishing a male from female singing voice at times let alone try to make out the words to the songs. And regardless of that, youll quickly learn that the music of yesteryear is miles better than whatever is being put out today, Tom MacDonald and a few other exceptions of course.
I love how you guys jump right into the song rather than going through all sorts of bullshit making us wait a whole fricken year to see the reaction, so thanks for that!
Many fans love the whole Slippery When Wet album, which I also think is pretty good. But my favorite Bon Jovi album came in the 90's... These Days. Love that entire album.
Picture.. A bowl cutted lil chubby Filipino kid screaming this to the top of his lungs -1986 New Year's countdown on MTV! Timeless. Jon Bon Jovi was my Freddie Mercury cause I didn't discover him yet.
With regards to the voice sound effect at the start "Uma Oha Uma" or something like that, check out their later song "It's My Life" which has a similar effect at the start. This song is actually early eighties. The album it's on is the first album I ever bought, "Slippery When Wet" way back when I was about 13 years old. I'm 49 years old now.
Ive been with my wife, then girlfriend since 1986. I made a list of about 30 Bon Jovi songs that literally tell the story of my life with my wife. Growing us as teen parents, military, college, careers, struggles, starting a business and on and on and on. He is one of the few acts from the 80s that has continuously put out new music up till today. IM not gay.. but he sure is damn looking back then. You want him today? hes out there. Check out ALWAYS for the love song. Beautiful song.
It’s so funny listening to your comment. I forget just how much time has gone by since “my time” in the 70s and 80s. I still feel like I’m in my teens until I look in the mirror and think, “who’s that old dude looking back at me”? As I get older Pink Floyd’ Time becomes more and more relevant. Great channel and great reaction.
Jon pays tribute to Gina and Tommy in "It's My Life" recorded decades later. Seen these guys multi times, great times!! ❤🥳👍🏽 Richie and Jon slowed it down for the 911 concert, remaking an acoustic version, great vid. Jon's son has YT channel and he often appears...Lex can check him out. 60 now, he's aged like a fine wine. 😉
I was watching VH1 when Bon Jovi was inducted into the Hall of Fame. And all the while shaking my head at the incredulity of such a concept. Now, bear with me a little here. The festivities proceeded along, with every member given a chance on the podium, until their segment was finally over. Directly following their ceremony- and this is when it gets really interesting- Steven Van Zandt comes out apparently to announce the next segment of the proceedings. The first thing I notice is a clear sh*t-eating grin on his face. I mean, he had the proverbial 'cat that swallowed a mouse' type of smirk plastered across his face. Then he revealed the flowing: that the Academy of Music has decided that they will begin, in the upcoming year, to allow songs to be inducted into their prestigious hall- even if the bands themselves are not considered to be suitable for such distinction. BAM! There it was. Oh, the irony! Scant a breath passes between the induction of the same type of band he had just described, this announcement takes center stage. Bon Jovi could have two songs in the hall: 'Living On A Prayer' and 'Wanted Dead Or Alive.' They are not a hall of fame band. Little Stevie knew this. That's why he was smiling so hard. He's from Jersey. The irony was not lost on him. You think he ever played any of their fluffy pop soccer mom anthems on his radio show? God forbid! The fact that they got in at all speaks volumes about the art of politics and of green mail. And that they got in before YES is all you need to know about what a joke the Academy truly is.
Bon Jovi was the biggest band on the planet in the mid to late 80s. Seriously, they were HUGE, and great. Check out "Wanted Dead or Alive", "I'll Be There For You", and "Bad Medicine"
This and "You Give Love A Bad Name" are off of an album called 'Slippery When Wet'. I'd love to see you guys react to "Let It Rock" from this album. It's the album's opener and kicks all kinds of ass. Richie's guitar solo is awesome!
Love me some Bon Jovi!! If you want some serious "belt it out" ballad magic, check out "Always" (it was released 8 years after this one - when they were starting to be less relevant - but it's my favorite sing/scream along song ever!)
Hey Guys, Bon Jovi has a ton of great songs. I seen them in the Meadowlands in New Jersey that’s where they’re from. John Bon Jovi the singer has a great voice THESES FIVE WORDS I SWEAR TO YOU , BED OF ROSES, DEAD OR A LIVE JUST TO MENTION A COUPLE. GREAT REACTION AS USUAL FROM JOEY FROM THE BRONX
Love this song. It's actually the first of several songs either about or referring to Tommy and Gina. The others are called "Born To Be My Baby", "99 In The Shade", and "It's My Life". "Born To Be My Baby" is a sequel, but doesn't mention them by name. "99 In The Shade" does mention them by name, but isn't about them. "It's My Life" is dedicated to them because they "never backed down".

Mom drops you off on a Friday night movie and hanging at the mall talking up chicks and playing video games in the arcade . You guys missed a great era!!!
You haven't lived till you're in crowded club/bar and the DJ is cranking this and turns it down during the chorus. Bunch of drunk people singing"Whoa-oh livin on a prayer"!!.
This was a definitive rock song of the late 80's. It was everywhere. At the time I was into Metallica and Anthrax and pretended to hate Bon Jovi...but I think every metalhead secretly sings the chorus at the top of their lungs when it plays in their car.
I never pretended, I was unashamed of the music I liked. I got so much stick from my metalhead mates for listening to rave music at school, one day I'd have Metallica's Kill 'Em All on my walkman, the next DJ Vibes with cheesy happy hardcore. But I didn't care what they said, music is a subjective experience. There were a whole bunch of happy hardcore covers of some of the power ballads from the likes of everyone from Foreigner to Savage Garden.
Wow have you guys not actually heard this one? Iconic track. Wonder what Tommy and Gina are doing now haha. Another great track by bon Jovi is it's my life.
@@markullyett I made the comment right at the start when they said they weren't sure if they've heard it. Brad said he recognises the song from somewhere by the time the chorus hit. This channel is easily the most honest channel out there.
@@markullyett but they were. Did you watch the video? It gets to the chorus and they say they've heard it. That doesn't happen to you? There is a song in a commercial right now that is only the hook. I never heard what the verses were until I looked up the song and discovered it was Imagine Dragons. My kids play Roblox and there parts of songs. I hear it over and over, but I wouldn't be able to recognize the rest of it until those parts. It's not believable that they would have only heard a part of this song?
funny that you say it's relatable to the pandemic. Some neighbors in the Roger's Park section of Chicago were said to have been singing this song together nightly. Check out "Raise Your Hands" and "Let It Rock". Those are only 2 of a very long catalog of hits
You should definitely check out "Stone In Love" by Journey. It has one of the best outro solos of all time and chronologically, it is right there between "Living On A Prayer" and "More Than A Feeling".

“99 in the Shade”……that’s the next Bon Jovi song to do. The energy & vibe is thru the roof. I really think you 2 would dig it.
Haha and then follow it with the drunkenness of Love For Sale!
We used to run out to the dance floor singing our heads off to this one, lol! Long long time ago!
Picture.. A bowl cutted lil chubby Filipino kid screaming this to the top of his lungs -1986 New Year's countdown on MTV!
Timeless. Jon Bon Jovi was my Freddie Mercury cause I didn't discover him yet.
This song and Prince’s Purple Rain are probably the two most sung songs at Karaoke bars. Karaoke classic.
When Brad said 'rockers of long ago' i died a little.
Long long long ago....we're so old (cries in 76)
Best thing to do while it is raining at work and im sittin in the truck. Yall freakin rock
Still rocking out at his age and killing it.
Desmond Child wrote this song. He also wrote Living La Vida Loca for Ricky Martin, & I Was Made for Loving You for KISS.
Cowrote with Jon and Ritchie.
Richie and Jon slowed it down for the 911 concert, remaking an acoustic version, great vid.
Jon's son has YT channel and he often appears...Lex can check him out. 60 now, he's aged like a fine wine. 😉
My favorite BJ song
I've always loved the talkbox (the thing in the beginning that make Lex oooh!) in this song.
They are definitely older today but still rocking. They don't have the same hairstyles but they all look great.
This and "You Give Love A Bad Name" are off of an album called 'Slippery When Wet'. I'd love to see you guys react to "Let It Rock" from this album. It's the album's opener and kicks all kinds of ass. Richie's guitar solo is awesome!
A smile is an amazing thing that not enough bands or people use. Smilers never lose, and frowners never win!
An anthem for the 80's. Love that talkbox. I'm still in love with you, Lex!
You guys are great ! Always so positive ! So much better than the other reactors out there! Thank you1
As a metal fan I’m supposed to despise Bon Jovi, but I have a secret passion for this music. Love this song and I really love the song Dead or Alive.
Wwwaaaannnntttteeeeddd....
No lie, my favorite part of Dead or Alive is the line "Seen a million faces, and rocked em all". Cause love or hate Bon Jovi, that was truth.
Lol, I know that feeling. Dokken, Bon Jovi etc. Had to hate on them...but...still.
I got the "7800° Fahrenheit" in -85 by my aunt. Was disappointed then as I never had heard about them back then. I still got the record.
bon jovi gets a metal pass for a few songs because some are just phenomenal. mainly this and dead or alive.
Bon Jovi still rocking and have a modern rocker look.
Love you guys and love your channel. Much love and big respect from the UK.
Jon Bon Jovi acts also. He played in the movie “U-571 “ he played Emmett!
This was definitely the song wich I first fell in love with guitar solos🤘🏻❤️❤️
Bon Jovi still making music today, you can easily find recent videos of them. Probably one of favorite recent songs is When We Were Us.
GREAT REACTION AS USUAL
FROM JOEY FROM THE BRONX
Love this song. It's actually the first of several songs either about or referring to Tommy and Gina. The others are called "Born To Be My Baby", "99 In The Shade", and "It's My Life". "Born To Be My Baby" is a sequel, but doesn't mention them by name. "99 In The Shade" does mention them by name, but isn't about them. "It's My Life" is dedicated to them because they "never backed down".
This song was in heavy rotation on classic rock and pop stations for years
They are around and were touring, until the pandemic. Jon Bon Jovi is still a babe! x
1986 was when this song became huge. Still love it till this day.
I love ❤️ Bon Jovi, great band great music 🎶 they go inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018! This came off the album Slippery When Wet along with other hits You Give Love A Bad Name, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Raise Your Hands and Never Say Goodbye! The whole album was great all the way thru! The lead singer Jon Bon Jovi has been married to his high school sweetheart all these years, has 3 soup kitchens and works in them does lots of charity work he and his wife and he is just a great human being! Thank you for showing Bon Jovi some love ❤️ please do more Bon Jovi, I listed a few but here is some more Bed Of Roses, I’ll Be There For You, Always, Keep The Faith and It’s My Life🤟🎶🙌🥰🎧
Awesome reaction! As for dressing, I dont often see modern rock bands have this look anymore, but I'm sure trying to get the look.
This song was released during my Sr year of HS just so many memories
Bon Jovi was from New Jersey and at least 30 years after this song came out you could be in any bar in the state and if this song came on and you started singing tons of ppl would join in
See that smile on your face Lexi? That was my 80s all the way through! We had fun. Great new music, great fun movies and we had malls where you didn’t get shot!!!! Mom drops you off on a Friday night movie and hanging at the mall talking up chicks and playing video games in the arcade . You guys missed a great era!!!
Sooooooooooo much energy in the 80's in the rock scene. Shhhhhht today!!
The lead singer is actually called JON BON JOVI. They used his 2 last names for the name of the band. i actually have seen them live in concert.
This song is everywhere played at a lot of sports games
Iconic song from the 80s, very very extremely big
Loving you two and the pure, honest reactions. 104K subs? Go get it!
FYI, Jon Bon Jovi runs a soup kitchen in NJ called JBJ’s Soul Kitchen
You haven't lived till you're in crowded club/bar and the DJ is cranking this and turns it down during the chorus. Bunch of drunk people singing"Whoa-oh livin on a prayer"!!.
The two of you are such a great couple.
Saw Bon Jovi as a youngin with cinderella opening. As Ive aged only one song still makes my playlist. Wanted Dead or Alive.
This was on the first album I ever bought. Thanks guys!
I still have it.
'Slippery When Wet' was the first record I ever got my mother to buy for me. I was 11 years old.
Wow have you guys not actually heard this one? Iconic track. Wonder what Tommy and Gina are doing now haha. Another great track by bon Jovi is it's my life.
Well, they did, but didn't realize until the chorus.
Of course they have heard it,wish they would be honest
Ok fair point ,but most of the songs they review are classics and 99% of people know them. In my humble opinion
This song is ICONIC. played in sports arena's. Just played everywhere 🤘
How is this played in sports arenas? This song doesn’t fit that type of venue at all. Lol
@@christianrapper what I said???????????? Most ICONIC song played everywhere? DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Think about it????????????????????????????????????????????????????? People down on their luck?🤪
funny that you say it's relatable to the pandemic. Some neighbors in the Roger's Park section of Chicago were said to have been singing this song together nightly. Check out "Raise Your Hands" and "Let It Rock". Those are only 2 of a very long catalog of hits
Pretty sure this is from 1987… I was between 12 and 13 when it came out! Great memories!
Heard this Album again and again, Slippery when wet, in my early youth. The first tiny steps towards Metal.
As a kid, I loved this song. As an adult I adore thiis.
A song filled with energy
You should definitely check out "Stone In Love" by Journey. It has one of the best outro solos of all time and chronologically, it is right there between "Living On A Prayer" and "More Than A Feeling".
One of the few great rock bands that came out past 1980 that was really good
Guns N Roses, Aerosmith, Whitesnake , Def Leppard, Motley Crue, AC/DC just to name a few great 80's bands
