  • The sounds of a Grey Butcherbird making typical calls and song in the Australian bush. The Grey Butcherbird (Cracticus torquatus) is a common species of songbird found throughout much of the Australian mainland and Tasmania. Although not as musical as the song of the closely related Pied Butcherbird, the vocalizations of Grey Butcherbirds include pleasant fluty, melodies and also duets as pairs. This species also makes a range of noisy cackling calls which sound a bit like maniacal laughter!
The audio in this video was recorded in Carnarvon Gorge National Park, Queensland. More examples of wildlife sounds and bird calls can be found on my website wildambience.c...

After months of searching and wondering what this bird call is, I found your video. It’s so beautiful and a joy to hear, thank you for posting 🤍

Believe it or not, Anna, I first heard it’s call over 50 years ago and did not know the bird, wondering all that time. Today after 50 years I know where this beautiful bird call comes from. What a joy!

Another "you've stayed up way too late" bird noise.

I’ve just had a baby butcherbird start coming into my garden of late and I’ve been trying to distinguish their call (thank you). Such beautiful birds and incredibly agile, I think this one has maybe lost their family, so grateful they feel safe to come here to eat and play💛

I love butcherbirds, especially the grey ones! Such smart, kind & gentle little birds.

Yes, they are lovely birds. We had a pair raise three young this year near our home and they often hang out in the garden.

Beautiful music. My wife and I feed up to four grey butcher birds with mince placed in morsels on the railing of our deck every day in Brisbane. Their song is often rewarded .... and , of course , they know it. They add tremendous value to our lives.

The most special relationship I have is with a baby butcherbird I call "Little Scallywag". She got very interested in this video!
There are some vids of her on my channel. Great video- thanks from the Little Scallywag and myself 😃

They are lovely birds. A pair raised three young this season near our garden and it has been entertaining watching their antics and listening to the young ones as they have gradually learnt to sing properly!

Great recording. We use mostly ambient nature sounds in our videos and find that recording a good audio is more difficult then recording good images. Also editing the unwanted sounds out is sometimes more time consuming then editing the images. The hardest thing we find is to record a natural wind sound. It always sounds like, just noise. People simply don't realise how difficult recording natural audio really is until they try it👍

Thanks for your comment. Great to hear you appreciate the sounds! Yes, it can be tough to get nice clean recordings but worth the time and effort when you do. 😊

These seem to be much harder to get photos of than pied butcherbirds. I find that the pied will happily pose and allow me to get close but greys just fly off and are more erratic. Funny how different they sound

I suppose it depends on the bird. I have a local grey that will land on my arm and is very photogenic

Very nicely presented, with little to no fluff, the spectral image lined up with the seek, very well done. Too bad it's an image and not video, but it's still a great resource - thanks.

Is that repeated low frequency "piping" call during the first, third and forth bursts the same species also? If so, are there two different birds (different sexes?) calling in response to each other?

    • @WildAmbience
      @WildAmbience  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes! It's a duet between two birds in the foreground with at least one other bird responding in the distance.

I saw a guy running from one of these yelling magpie and laughed my ass off. Butcherbirds aren't notorious for swooping anything that moves.
