Wether people want to admit it or not. That side kick is pretty hard to deal with. But of course Buakaw was too good and was going to win this fight side kick or not.
I'm not so sure if he's that good of a striker (by strike I assume you're talking about hands), but his kicks are and knees are deadly, he's strong as hell. He takes hits like an ox. Sun Tao was outclassed in this fight. He didn't have a chance. Great video! Thanks for posting!
Nice theory, but i believe that this was just buakaw trying to change his style a little, trying different things, and we can see he is pretty damn fast, but this is not his priot style.
It's like 6:49, Sanda guy throws straight right and -ducks- because he doesn't want to get hit. He has no capacity to throw punch after punch in combos, all he can do is one shot at a time. Banking on that after the 1st shot, he can land a takedown. Problem is it's really easy to predict people who only throw one shot at time and don't have power in their left hand. Look at 6:49 nobody thinks the sanda fighter is going to throw a left. He has no power in left hand.
I assume you're talking about the kick Buakaw threw when Sun Tao had his back turned? It's not like Buakaw went after him when he called a time-out for a low blow or during the glove touching, etc. It was within the rules. When the referee says 'fight' it's up to the fighters to be ready - if a fighter puts his hands down or turns his back without raising his hand for a time-out, he is asking for trouble..
4. Muay Thai never won San Shou in a single tourment, not before not ever. 5. all Muay Thai strikes were allowed in this fight in the last fight, but San Shou's offensive throws were banded, but that doesn't stop San Shou own muay thai assess 4. Muay Thai got beaten every single time by San Shou if you watch any professional fights like, pride professional fight.
Stamps to the supporting leg are not nearly as essential to Sanshou as elbows are in MT. There are many other throws available to counter the roundhouse. IMO, MT is much more disadvantaged.
Current muaythai sports rules don't allow grapplings and ground fighting but some traditional ancient muaythai styles have such matters but even thais don't even know. So every match when thais face sanda fighters under sanda rules they face some problem but they have learnt to deal with it now. Fairtex boxers are good examples.
agree. I was reading some people calling sun tao loser, but he's not as bad as you guys described. ANyway , his endurance sucks. Buakaw is experienced and better.
I wonder how Buakaw would do in UFC if he he would train Brasilian jiu jutsu too, UFC Guys are all huge roid users but they seem pretty slow as well and buakaw is really skillful and fast kicker and his stamina is really good too.
His clinch is good. I don't think that BJJ is something which can be learned in short time. Buakaw in muay is so good good because he spend that much time in muay thai. To become equally good in BJJ he need to spend about same amount of time
Sorry but that was domination. The reason Sun Tao didn't get up at the end was because he had been eating knees and middlekicks throughout the fight. If you'd seen Buakaw fight before you would know that he only goes for the kill like that if he sees that his opponent is hurt or not up to par.
I enjoyed the video however, I did not enjoy reading the comments below it. I was actually looking for some intelligent and constructive commentation in regards to this fight. Instead, I get a battle of: "muay thai is better/sanshou is better" debate. (geez, this debate is seemingly endless)
It is pretty impressive that he won there in their country. But it is more impressive that he has to fight under total different condition! Under different rules! But he won! And I think that this fight WAS EVEN before he entered the K1-MAx! That´s something to be considered, too! He wasn´as good as nowdays!
Buakaw is really worth the respect. A pity Liu Hailong is not in his weight class. Technically it's very hard to get a throw or takedown on Buakaw with that muay thai clinch denying the double underhook. That's why just being proficient in your own style is not enough, you need to know the right techniques and strategies in your style to counter your opponent. Too bad for Sun Tao, Buakaw is too powerful.
I hope you guys all know that Buakaw is just toying with Sun Tao. He never fought seriously in the first round. Notice how his arms are down, and he does what Sun Tao does (side kicks, hook with heel-he never does these in his fights). Then when he fought seriously in round 2 using his usual kicks and knees, Sun Tao got beat up in no time. I'm Chinese, but i still have to say that Buakaw kicks ass.
also Muay is the most popular choice of martial arts in any tournaments, fighters often learn and mix different fight styles, and majority of them learned muay in one of thsoe mix. if sanshou was so good it woulda been the most popular choice, after all these guys fight for a living lastly elbows arent allow in most tournaments and this fight. which put muay thai at a disadvantage
I dont think so man, although that sanshou guy had skills, Buakaw was just a more complete fighter. That's the pros of muay thai, they are specialist when it comes to elbows, knees and the clinch.
@N1ceV1d Buakaw won fair and square, but that wasn't a cheap shot. It's a veteran trick, I've seen it done in the ring in kickboxing matches before. In boxing, they said Jersey Joe Walcott liked to walk away then come back with a right hand. Bernard Hopkins does it too.
He probably saw Tao's walking away with his back turned as a sign of disrespect and wanted to punish him. It wasn't the most gentlemanly gesture but I wouldn't call it a cheap shot either and Buakaw is definitely not a 'punk'. When Buakaw floors a guy, he sometimes feints a kick but always pulls short, he always touches gloves and shows good sportsmanship before and after a fight. Have you seen Norifumi Yamamoto's episodes? Now that's a punk..
Hate to break it to you, owlshour, but styles don't fight; people do. This is not a fight between two different styles, this is a fight between two different people. (it may be worth mentioning that many boxers can throw an effective jab out of a sideways stance).
"baukaw didn't got advantage on sun tao... just luckily a knee and ko" He got that knee because he was overwhelming sun tao with strikes the whole time.
As I mentioned in the other Buakaw vs Sun Tao comments. Buakaw is fighting limited to Sanshou moves. Essentially its Buakaw trying to do Sanshou versus a Sanshou fighter. Still wins.
Sun Tao did his job well, remember Buakaw is the No.1 Thai fighter, Sun Tao is only a 2nd class fighter. I expect to see a real fight between a top chinese kung fu fighter and a thai champion.
gonzostyles, I'm at 6'0 123 lb an average university student without any fighting experience. what's the point to challenge me into a fight? is that the mental of Muay Thai fighter? pick on some1 without fighting ability after raped badly by San shou?
hey, did you forget that in the match sanda side made an agreement for muaythai not to use elbows...and i've seen both events...in ch and th...the sanda fighters barely won by points....they had to be hospitalized while the muay fighters went to drink up at their happy grill.
yeah but going after someone's back is rare. People stop all the time after the referee calls fight. They stop to tap gloves, they stop to wait like 1 second for the other fighter. It's sportsmanship. Buakaw didn't cheat or anything, it was just punkish.
oh, almost forgot, sorry to knock you with some news. last week, 22th of july, The 2006 muay thai vs San Shou tourment ended up with a 4:1 total vicotry for San Shou. Muay Thai just plain inferior,I don't see there's any reason could disput this.
GroinZooStyles, there're more than 10 matchs that thai's top ranked fighters destoried by nameless sanda amateurs. 1. Sun Tao is lack of lethal strikes and stamina... Actually most Chinese fighters have the same problem. Liu Hai Long doesn't have much stamina too, but he's punches and high roundhouse is so powerful and it covers his weakness. Maybe Sanda fighters should train as hard as those MT fighters. I know Chinese don't need to fight 5+ lethal matches per week just for tens of bucks like MT fighters, but don't be too easy on yourselves! Look how hard they train!
... street fighting, ground fighting turned out to be the most effective when I don't want to take a change and get hurt... but my A game is stand up fighting... and yes more dangerous, but when you're about to pop someone's shoulder and they are in pain and you're telling them I'll let you go if you say you give up... everyone said they gave up, so I didn't break anything. majority of people think grabing someone and trying to throw them is effective, that's untill I'm ontop and with their arm
That's a younger and unexperienced Buakaw, he fights very differently now, his boxing is now superb and much more cautious without loosing his agressiveness. That Sun Tao is a dirty cheater, he is grabbing and trying to takedown Buakaw all the time because his getting his ass kicked, Buakaw's kicks are far more powerful, not to mention his knee techniques.
Muay Thai is a very strong striking art. But if u were to put a Muay Thai fighter against a traditional kung fu fighter/sanshou fighter on the street without gloves, the kung fu fighter would probably win hands down. Kung Fu is very restricted in the ring with gloves, taking away palm strikes, locks, chokes, and breaks, and alot of grappling as well.
@noksoocao so hav u seen shootboxing scup 2010?buakaw pretty much owned it & now champ, the mmafighter who beat everyone mostly from the clinch, takedowns, throws, almost winning the whole event when it came to buakaw he lost that game, forced to trade and ofcourse he gonna lose that 1 too. im not sying he has groundgame, im saying is its still good grappling, the thai clinch is highly underrated.its no aikido or BJJ, still effective.MT fightrs need 2 practice dis prt of d game like saenchai & buakaw

Good strategy with buakaw. He changed his muay thai style to be more offensive to defeat Sun Tao

Thanks a lot bro. It is good to see people willing to exchange in the martial arts without ego.
Sun Tao ate too many knees trying to throw Buakaw. Buakaw is just too damn good.
Best part is when Sun Tao goes down and the commentator is like 哎呀!
Es el mejor
Buakaw doesn't fight his usual MT style here (whats up with the low guard on both of them) guess he was told to fight differently
Nice theory, but i believe that this was just buakaw trying to change his style a little, trying different things, and we can see he is pretty damn fast, but this is not his priot style.

Atleast Sun Tao once shared the ring with the legendary Buakaw
Can you name me some good names from Thailand so I can look for them?
what are the rules in this fight? Buakaw fights without using his fists, and his stance is so different from his usual one
