I myself had to catch one of these today! I was coming home from Middlesbrough after celebrating my 60th birthday - got a train from Darlington, ostensibly to Taunton - the one I was scheduled to travel on should have left Darlington at 12:15 approximately and arrived here at about 6:15 - I got one that came an hour earlier - with the issues that the trains are currently having, I didn’t want to risk my train being cancelled - so I couldn’t sit in my reserved seat, as I was, effectively, on the “wrong” train - it was going where I was going, so I took the risk of having to play musical chairs, only without the music - didn’t have much of an issue with that - when the train got to Derby, it changed direction, for some reason I was not sure of - somehow, it made it to Tamworth - only when it got to Birmingham did the main problem kick in! Quite a few passengers had boarded at Birmingham New Street - only for the train manager - what they used to call the guard - to announce that, due to a signalling error at what I later learned was between Cheltenham and some other place I didn’t quite catch, this train had been cancelled - all of us who had travelled down on it from all points north and even those who had boarded at Birmingham New Street, had to disembark and go up to the concourse at the top of the lift, where we were offered alternate arrangements - those people going to anywhere between Cheltenham and Bristol (both Parkway and Temple Meads) I wasn’t 100% sure of - but, for anyone going to any stations beyond Bristol Temple Meads (Taunton, in my case, or beyond Exeter St David’s), the best offer that they could make was to put us on a train to Euston - like the one featured in this video - then get a Tube to Paddington and a GWR service to Somerset and Devon from there - for my part, I went as far as Coventry on it - as we were approaching Coventry, a woman approached me and suggested that I got off at Coventry, took another train back to Birmingham New Street and another service to Plymouth (of which one of the stops was Taunton) would be waiting for me - and she ultimately turned out to be right - whoever you are, I am deeply indebted to you - you saved me a nightmare journey! Euston, indeed!
geoff marshall inspired me to do train videos, specifically tfl services. then simon poole and gloves trains later inspired me to do videos on non-tfl services. i'll definitely do a video when i go to amsterdam from 16th to 23rd august
the context behind that is back in march (this year) when i travelled with lner to leeds for the first time, i walked into the standard class area of coach k on the class 801 azuma and said "this is standard class". a fellow passenger responded "this is where the peasants sit" and i've still found it funny ever since 😂 sadly i didn't record that
i still find it difficult to not say it when walking through standard class whenever i travel with long distance train operators in the uk with standard and first class areas, especially avanti west coast and lner. i'll probably do the same when i eventually travel with gwr, grand central, hull trains and transpennine express
if i travel on another fast train, i will only resist if it's lumo or southeastern high speed as neither of the aforementioned have a first class cabin available
