  • Hey gang and welcome along to another adventure out in the Australian countryside. This week I pay a visit to the eastern side of the Booderee National Park and in particular to Murrays Beach, Murrays Beach Boat Ramp and Green Patch. These are some of the most pristine beaches you'll find anywhere in the world and amazing locations to explore. Enjoy :)

I agree with you 100% on the nuclear plant. I live down here, in the Jervis Bay area and, we need to keep it pristine for future generations. The problem is, that quite a few people still think that a Nuclear plant in the area is a good idea.
On top of this we have developers moving in and only seeing $$$ signs while wanting to erect future slums. It's a shame, but I don't think that it is what is needed.

    Hi Andy
Great work on the videos - really well shot and thoughtfully cut together.
I'm also a keen amateur photographer and drone pilot. I just wanted to share some information with you. I noticed that you've used your phantom to get some great aerial footage over Booderee, Honeymoon bay, South Booderee, Hyams beach, white sands walk and a few others. They look fantastic. Problem is the whole of Jervis Bay (as far North as Gerroa, as far South as Milton, as far West as Kangeroo valley) is all No Fly Zone according to the Civil Aviation Authority. Mostly has to do with the presence of the NAVY in that part of the coast. As if that weren't enough, National Parks don't allow drones unless you have a written permit obtained in advance. I've checked, and these permits are only given out at a cost and almost never to amateurs. Unfortunately the Nay Sayers have suceeded in shutting down drones even when the pilot is flying in a thoughtful and courteous manner to all in the area.
Here is a link to the CASA drone flying map - you can use it to plan trips, to check if its legal before you go -

Here's is a link to the National Parks rules on drone flying -

Here's a link to details of a case where CASA used some poor buggers youtube channel of him flying his drone in the wrong place to to send him a fine -

In a nutshell - my advice is to set the videos of you flying your drone in those locations to "private" so only your friends and family can see them. I may even have been known to do something similar myself! Good luck. Keep up the great filming!

Hi. Thanks for the lengthy comment and I do appreciate the general thrust of your argument since there is so much illegal drone use going on. Unfortunately your information is only partially accurate, so please allow me to correct some of the inaccuracies. As someone who lives within the area of restricted airspace that your refer to, I did of course look into the subject (in detail) when I got my drone. As a result of that, I wrote an article about the very subject of drone flights in and around Jervis Bay which you can find here - andyhutchinson.com.au/illegal-fly-drone-commonwealth-park/ - please have a read of it.
However to summarise the situation. The restricted airspace you refer to (R421A) is not always active and the rather limited app you refer to (or indeed the more recent official CASA 'Can I Fly There' app) does not reflect the actual situation - something I have taken up with CASA directly on several occasions. Subject to NOTAMs, R421A and its surrounding airspace sectors are not active at all at weekends. They are not active before 8am in the morning. They are not active after 12pm on Fridays. I know all this because I have spoken to the tower at Albatross, by way of the military switchboard, but also because one of my good friends is a naval aviator who flies out of Albatross. So any sunrise is fine, all weekend is fine and all Friday afternoon is fine.
Commonwealth Parks have a blanket ban on drones (as per my article) but National Parks are a bit more relaxed about the situation. The rangers here have always been happy for me to fly my drone on the rare occasions when I am on flying on their land. However since I usually fly from a beach below the high watermark - it is nearly always outside their jurisdiction anyway.
Which brings us along to the question of how I shot drone footage legally within Booderee (a Commonwealth Park). All of the footage I shot was taken on a single day. An adventure race series took place in Jervis Bay last year and the organisers wanted film crews to be able to shoot with drones to capture the action. As a result, for the duration of the race, the airspace was completely cleared and a drone amnesty was put in place, alongside permissions for drone use within Booderee by the park authorities. As I was working for Shoalhaven Council at the time (photographing all 107 beaches in the Shoalhaven for the 100 Beach Challenge), I was told about this drone amnesty and consequently flew my drone (safely and completely legally) on as many beaches as I could get to within the time allotted. Since then they have actually relaxed the regulations slightly and you are now permitted to fly a drone in a Commonwealth Park with a permit - if I want to fly my drone there again I will of course acquire said permit.
So, as you can see - there is no need for me to set my videos to private as every thing I have done is completely above board. Happy flying to you too :)

Hi Andy. Thanks for all that - it's very helpful. You seem to be very well informed on the topic. One final thing - how sure are you of the situation around your comment " from a beach below the high watermark - it is nearly always outside their jurisdiction anyway". Have you read about this somewhere else?

That's the official point at which it become public beach - anything below the high tidemark is common ground, not park :)

I love your videos my friend. I am an Aussie living in Essex Uk and you are there enjoying my old stomping ground.. You sound a bit like a friend of mine from Colchester. I can't wait to come home for good. I am an artist specialising in paintings of translucent water. you should look me up.

HI, How do you go about using a drone there? Are there any restrictions or special permits required?

    • @barefootgeek
      @barefootgeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good question Rob - and the answer is that you don't go about using a drone there. They are completely banned in Booderee National Park (within which Murrays and Green Patch sit) and also in an area of military restricted airspace that covers the entire Shoalhaven (including Jervis Bay) and also within the 5nm boundary-ban of a nearby military airfield. The footage you see here was filmed on one single day about four years ago when the airspace was closed down for the filming of an adventure race series and I was given special permission by the park and Shoalhaven council to fly my drone there. It sucks, but it is what it is.

@@barefootgeek Thanks. Yeah I saw the airport and the restriction on the app but was curious incase I make it there. Unfortunately the way its heading we wont be able to fly anywhere soon.
