My introduction to VOR navigation was in the air. My instructor started with "VORs are really easy to use. Here's how..." I find them a lot easier to use in the air than to explain on the ground.
Having just flown across the country from IAD to Dallas to Maui then home to SF to IAD I was able to figure out runway markings thanks to you. I too love the music at the end. Thanks for keeping us safe in the skies
Hi Joe, what a perfect timing, Im half way in my PPL theory course and VOR is current topic! Your explanation made such a difference to understand VORs! Thank you!
Thank you Joe for that great video on the importance of classic navigation. That remembers me when I was young lieutenant in signal troops in the 80's and I had to conduct my section through hills and valleys with the only help of map and compass. That was great time.
Our Captain Joe has returned. The moment I saw the notification I immediately clicked on the video without second thought and it was worthwhile😎 Keep it up Captain❤️🤘😎
@@amaraziz8131 In many countries we affectionately call them both as "Captains", and sometimes refer to the four strip captain as "Commander" or "Commandant" in attention to his/her seniority and experience, but both pilots are called "Captains"... calling a first officer as "First-Officer" is simply not usual!
This Is The Best, Clearest and Simplest Explanation of how to use VOR for Situational Awareness and Navigation That I've Seen on TH-cam! Thank You For Sharing
Captain Joe, I'm a student pilot and this is truly the simplest and best explanation of operating the VOR. This has helped me so much and it's stuck in my memory. Sincerely, Thank you Sir.
After figuring out that I was initially tuned in to a DME station, I was finally able to fly a short trip from Helsinki Malmi (EFHF) to Turku (EFTU) only by instrument and without GPS. Thanks a lot for this briliant explanation! (Flight was done in simulator, so I hadn't had any lessons/testing before.)
Wow! Probably the simplest and easiest to understand explanation out there. Thank you! As a rusty pilot returning to the air, this has helped me relearn VOR. With the new normal being GPS and flight apps, I still want to remember, understand and be able to use VOR until the day it goes away.
I've been studying flying, actually flying, and learning about VOR's for 2 years now. This is the first time I understand how to navigate using them. Your video is the best! Thanks!
Joe, I have read and followed several written and video explanations of VOR and this is the one that brought it all together with the basics first and great examples. Thank-you very much for taking the time to share your expertise.
Very true...as a professional Mariner I watch youngsters cling to glass screens oblivious to coastal navigation aids such as light houses, beacons etc. Failing to realise the importance of secondary/ back up means for cross check or GPS failure. Most unfortunate...the wind mill bit was interesting. Thanks Capt. Joe...!
Great video Joe! I fly around vfr relying on SkyDemon and had forgotten how to even use VORs but this was an excellent refresher and reminded me how easy it is. I’m going to make a video to see how I get on!
Nice Code Joe! Good to repetition of VOR navigation! My flight instructor gave me the advice that the radial I am on is always on the opposite side of the flag which makes it easy to determine the radial I‘m flying on when the needle is cantered.
Good video Joe. I remember my time fondly, flying around Lake Okechobee, refuelling in Pahokee, night flying to Sebring. All in the little R22 to build time. Florida is great for flying :-)
I love your videos I want to become a pilot when I have time as I am a locomotive Engineer and don't have alot of free time. Keep up the outstanding work
You forgot the most important part. After tuning to the VOR, identify it! You want to make sure you are actually tuned to the VOR you wanted. Also, if the station is undergoing maintenance or testing, the identifier will be removed. No identifier == don't use this navaid.
@@allthehandlesweretaken You listen to the signal. Here in the States and Canada, and, I think, everywhere in the Americas, every VOR has a three-letter Morse code identifier and most also have a voice identifier. Some, if not most, modern radios will decode the Morse ID and display it on the panel. I presume VORs in the rest of the world work the same way, but I don't know that for sure.
Great video mate, I'm studying my CPL in Australia at the moment and wrapping my head around NDB's and VOR's has been difficult, but you this video has definitely helped !!
Great two part video, Captain Joe👮 It do's me reminding on the tree part serie on How to fly a holding pattern, what I have watching manny times👍 I wish you all the best, Captain! And wé still allways learning😥👮
Hello Captain Joe, great 2nd video as usual. I appreciate your explanation of VOR. I think I asked before, but don’t remember. Can you make a video explaining Cat 1,Cat 2, and Cat3. Please and thank you. Love your channel and your enthusiasm explaining aviation. Great videos. Big ups from Toronto Canada.👍😎
Another great technical video Joe, keep doing more of these please mate! I can picture the faces of your casual viewers frantically trying to understand all this but they should get it, both of your VOR videos are explained as simply as they can be..... they're perfect for beginners. You should be an instructor Joe, you have a knack for explaining complicated things in an easy to understand way.
Great and educating video. Many years ago I wish I had a VOR receiver on board while flying VFR over Nevada. It would have make nevigating back to base lot more easier.
I have my PPL and never learned the trick to go to 45° to intercept a radial. Thanks for this :) I also learned to use two VOR to get the position, can be handy. I learned this on my exam day, we were VFR on top and he showed me how we would get to the airport with the two VORs, it was really nice to learn this way :)
You make complex topics simple and together with the humor you put in your videos make them so interesting to watch. Thank you Captain. Learning a lot from your videos.
You should do a couple videos on A.D.F. I know it is very old tech BUT some older aircraft have them and students should know how to use them properly. The only aircraft I have flown with glass panels, multi function displays or heads up displays are military. I don't fly them any more and the aircraft I do fly are old and simple like me. (Two com/nav's, an A,D.F. and a transponder with Mode C) If you really want to get into short lived nav aids do some videos on LORAN, That would really be a blast from the past for us old time stick guys..
Thankyou. Was on X-Plane and i couldnt figure out this tutorial level. it didnt explain things very well. Now it all makes so much sense. Very well explained.

Thank you soooo much sir... You rescued me from a lot of depressing about VOR... Thank you so much... You have so beautiful and frankly style of understanding ... Love from pakistan... 😚
I have heard on atc using the therms inbound radial and outbound radial. I wonder how vor's are powered in these remote locations like the Grand Canyon VOR. Tnx!
next time i have to use on of them before i get lost in the mountings ....VOR .you funny .never seen a pilot like you.well done .have a good journey where ever you go
This was a really good video. I’m sure there’s a lot more details to it, but the description and examples in this video made perfect sense. Thanks a ton! Personally I think it’s fun to run the calculations. It feels like navigating during WWII.

VOR in a nutshell
One of the best explanations of VOR navigation I've ever heard!
