What I would do to have the genius of a David McCullough. He embodied wisdom.
It's a shame Charlie Rose fell into disrepute. He lent his name to quality TV programming like this. Now we have practically nothing like it.
McCullough is an American icon. His book on John Adams is classic genius.
David should have read the placards at the Wright Brother’s Memorial. Their sister would ride bicycles with their sister. They would watch birds together. She helped them stay on target. Their Mother was the inspiration who gave them the tools and knowledge to pursue Science. She gave them a toy as children which inspired them.
John Adams is my favorite mini series ever. After I finished it, I told people, "I dunno what to do with the rest of my life now"
Don't forget Leonardo Da Vinci, and his flying contraptions ...hundreds of years, before W. Brothers 🐾🐔

Leonardo conceptualized flying machines that he never made real.. in fact, the designs weren't air-worthy

@@MapleSyrupPoet They studied Otto Lilienthal and his mathematics and physics. They found some of it to be incorrect.
This video is not correct - Gustave Whitehead was first in Bridgeport Connecticut in 1901.

There is a conflict ongoing about who was first to "fly". In Connecticut, a fellow named Gustave Weiskopf (Whitehead) is reported to have flown more than a year before the Wrights. Tests of reproductions of his "model 21" have proven the design can fly and is in some ways more advanced in design than the original Wright Flyer. What sets the Flyer apart from other, earlier attempts is that the Flyer was controllable in a practical fashion and that the Wrights could duplicate and did improve their designs. Whitehead, even though he may have flown and controlled his machine, was unable to duplicate his initial success. The Wrights, through the scientific process were able to correct mis-steps and build on successes. The only problem I have with the Wrights is their sitting on their laurels and trying to patent ANY flight. Their actions set the US several years back in innovation behind Britain, France and Germany.

It was the Brazilian Santos Dumont who for the first time managed to lift and sustain a flight with his own means of his 14 Bis device.
He sure did fly....in 1906. Unfortunately he was late to the party. The Wrights were flying at Huffman Prairie in 1904-1905 in front of hundreds of spectators.

@@Marcos5pb I don't have to prove anything! History proves it! They took off with a powered engine from a level surface in 1903.
@@Marcos5pb --The Wright Flyers from 1903 onward were powered aircraft, not gliders.
@@sharonraizor2839 It wasn't a level surface, and they had a favorable wind. Whitehead, and possibly others, flew earlier but did not have the "pub" that the Wrights got.
