NORTHSEAKAYAK - Sea Kayak Training Camp Lumbarda, Croatia Edition 2018

- A few months ago, I got an email from Ivka and Boris. They introduced themselves as enthusiastic beginners to sea kayaking, telling me that they want to start up a sea kayak business in Lumbarda, Croatia. They asked us if they could attend to one of our well-known Training Days to learn a thing or two about sea kayaking and safety. While getting to know each other the idea of coming over to Belgium changed to organizing a whole training camp spread over several days. I could feel that these people were on the same page as our NORTHSEAKAYAK team, eager to learn, enthusiast and friendly, so I said yes! I could organize my classes as I pleased for five days. Although I had never met Ivka and Boris before I could immediately feel a connection, my feeling was right when I arrived there! When I said to them that the “magic” would happen when my team arrived they couldn’t believe it at first. We made a schedule for the coming days, way in advance, so we could teach a large number of techniques, sharing as much of our own knowledge as possible. Safety is a priority so rescues, self-rescues and whole doom scenarios would be included. Now we look back to a successful Sea Kayak Training Camp in Lumbarda, Croatia. I would recommend other people to visit the area, make sure to contact Boris and Ivka, their business is called “Spirit of Korkyra” (website spiritofkorkyr... ) and aims at the sea kayak enthusiast and hikers who want to explore the beautiful island. I can honestly say that we have made new friends who welcomed us as if they have known us for years! I had the honor to work with a great, friendly and motivated crew who I consider family! I hope to go back there one day! Big thanks for the whole crew who attend this first Sea Kayak Training Camp in Lumbarda, and let’s not forget our lovely photographer Sylvie, for filming a lot! As a Army Sea Canoeing Instructor in the UK, I'm intrigued to know how you overcome the limited effective instruction time associated with teaching kayak rolling in cold water, especially with the instructor standing alongside the pupil boat.
I was lucky enough to secure long-term access to a small heated pool, where sessions of two hours were normal, but I wouldn't try that in ambient UK open water.

Hi Bob, That is a good question! We do it this way: we limit our session to one hour with a maximum of 2 participants per coach. We dress a bit thicker as a coach, since we stand in the water. We switch between participants, the one that isn't rolling paddles to get warm. We do this kind of training on the slipway in the local harbor around high tide. Sometimes we do it after a regular training. Benefit of this is that the paddler is immediatly trained for cold water. Hope this helps? Thank you for your contribution as well!
@@Northseakayak Bless you, thankyou for your answer - it's always good to learn from each other. At 75 years, I'm long past active teaching now, but I retain an interest in the subject, and still take out my Everest Elite on reasonably warm days, but at a relatively pedestrian pace.

Hi there, Thank you for watching. Yes, the water was very clear indeed, not much sand over there to trouble the water. The downside is that there is more salt in the water than over here. We felt it immediatly in our eyes just after the rolling (it stings). But, a very beautifull place over there with lots of possibilities. Cheers, Dimitri

Great video! Sorry I didn't join... I had a lot of work in Split. I have some question but I can ask Boris about some rescue techniques scenarios (person not moving and than use more kayaks while person is laying on top). :-)

Hi Stefan & Rik, Yeah, you missed something, it was really great both the environment as the people! They mostly used their own boats. They have 3 Venture kayaks (really great boats) and they will buy some more after the season. The Prijons are temporary boats. PE is great when exploring the rocky coastline. Cheers, Dimitri
