You just sold me the HX Stomp. I figured this should be possible, but wasn't sure without any prior experience of the unit. Your video went straight to relevant things like the basic idea around the concept, the physical signal chain and the how the patch should be set up. Also great explanation how and why everything had been done the way they were. Thanks for the video.
I have and use this exact same setup and not only does it sound amazing, you have LOADS of headroom. I can't believe how powerful the powerstage 170 is - playing with my full band I'm at maybe 30% volume and am loud, present, and cut through the mix.
wow men. now i know why i sounded good to FOH but crappy on stage sound. i was sending L output to FOH and R output to stage cabinet through the return of the amp in there...both with IRs. really helpful videos. thanks men!!!
Tried this out really quickly with a Deluxe Reverb model in the Stomp, York Dexlue Reverb IR, 170 PowerStage into a closed back 1x12 and it sounded amazing.
Thanks!!! I have an Hx Stomp... and in kinda of struggling with the sound. I'm going to play a gig in a couple of weeks and i have no idea how to set everything up. This video helped me a bit!! Thanks again!
Dude. Just bought my Helix floor yesterday. Already pretty happy with my crunch tone thanks to your tips on tightening the palm mutes. You saved me so much time!
Nice job, actualy i realy like ur micd Sm57 take On the IR usualy i low cut at 80hz and high cut at 12k hz by default. I would love to get the Seymour Duncan Powerstage and do the same with my 2x12 ENGL to have the Volume on stage and sending the IR to the Soundguy. Now im running the Powercab with the 1/4 cable in FRFR mode, it's good but still miss the Stage Volume to a Live setup. ( but through a Pa sounds killer) And when i can, i use the PRS MT15 with my ENGL2x12 V30... with only a TS808 or a PrecisionDrive is amazing.
Another great video! Some great tips in here! You will also find an EQ last in the chain will help greatly when running to an actual speaker cab. Keep um coming brother! Good stuff!
Is there any reason why you would use the Stomp’s “Send” to the Power Amp and not the 2nd output on top? Is it about keeping that free for Stereo options or something?
Informative big time …is is possible to send FOH signal stereo into two frfrs for stereo, I guess you’d need a mixer ..yes ? I’m super newby thanks fir any advice ..learning so much from you sir
Thanks for the video. I use an Orange Pedal Baby with the HX stomp. I found that using an EQ and cutting everything past 10 k or 12 k makes the HX stomp and cab feel and sound much better. I almost cannot discern the difference between that and my little mini rect 25. Rock on 🤘🏼😎
Do you think it’s necessary to put an EQ after the AMP BLOCK so the signal that goes to the cab cleans up of unwanted frequencies?... or the cab does that work?
Good video, very clear explanations. The mic'd cab sounded very scooped to my ears compared to the IR going direct. I would have liked to have heard your take on it as well in the video.
Great video, but you forgot to mention your input and output settings, are they mic or line level? I’m interested to know if you could have done the same setup, but used the main right output instead of the effects send, if so how would the end of the signal chain look?
Dude this is Super Helpful! Just got an HX today! (Not sure I like the tone I get with a QSC power amp though- Might grab that Seymour or an Orange pedal baby)
Easy to understand video. It’s tough to tell on our end since either method essentially simulates a close mic cabinet. Does the power amp into a guitar cabinet sound more “amp in a room” for practice sessions? I’m thinking of running the stomp into a 170 into a cab would give me a great low volume practice setup at home.
With the Powerstage, you can run a cab much quieter. I've used this setup on a live/practice situation and it was loud! So you really have the best of both worlds.
Nick Hill thank you. It seems like the ideal solution. Practice quietly at home without IR’s without bugging everyone and just run foh with ir’s live. Seriously well put together video mate.
Common thing to do. Send your processed guitars to front of house so people can hear it because your just using the can for stage sound. Also, this setup was to demonstrate a proof of concept for different setups. As an example, I run my sounds to front of house through a splitter so I get an in-ear mix. I also have a cab on stage for some stage sound. Lots of guitar players do this so they can “feel some air moving.” It also works as a good backup in case one’s in-ear monitors stop working.
@NickHillMakesMusic I do not use in ears and the venue mics up the cabs so the front speaker moniters gives me what i need to hear. I'm more asking in my instance, would I still need to put it to front of house? It doesn't seem like I would but I'm still new to modelers hence why I ask
Try and test both. There’s no right or wrong answer. The AMP block is also simulating power section saturation but these clean, solid state power amps typically are just that, clean. Meaning they aren’t doing any or much “coloring,” of the tone/sound. I use an AMP block. Cheers man. Do some experimenting
greetings ! consultation . Is this configuration possible to use on bass? with 2 Hartke Hd410+ Hd115 boxes? I have no experience with this type of pedals but I am quite interested. excellent channel!
Is it ok to use the full amp model into the power stage? I heard somewhere to use the preamp. Is the only use for the pre amp models for the 4 cable method?
I've never NOT uses the full amp. A power stage has no "tube power section." It's just clean gain so you'll want every bit of the emulation the model has to offer.
could it be possible to do everything you are doing, but have the first pre cab send feed left side of the stereo send, and then do ANOTHER send post cab feeding the right side of stereo send? still having the first path feeding main LR.
On stage, in a live setting, it’s never something I would even think to notice. I just need to feel and some volume. I’ve not used a FRFR so I can’t speak to that.
Hey Nick, love your videos. I noticed you used a full amp on the HX stomp going in front of the SD Powerstage, instead of preamp which would make more sense. Is there a reason for that ?
I run the same setup for band practice and live gigs except I just run the helix into the power stage into a cab. But I use the left mono output into the Seymour Duncan powerstage. Is that right? Or should I use the send on the helix?
I don’t see this particular powerstage being able to push a bass cabinet very well. Bad cabs typically need a ton of power through them. Most who use this setup would send the processes bass signal to front of house and then some type of in-ear monitor
Nick Hill thanks for tgr reply, i have gone down the in-ear route to be honest but wondered about these applications. Thought it would be limiting issue being able to push at this level. Cheers Nick 👍
I’d look into solid state power amps for bass. You can get a 1000 watt one for a good price. Check ohm machine on your can and you’re good. I’ve actually used this type of setup filling in for a band.
Hi Nick, thanks for the video! One question I cannot seem to find an answer for is whether to use line or instrumentt level as input for the SD PowerStage. What do you for your case and is this important for the sound? thanks!
If I wanted to have path 1 come out mono into a monitor, then a parallel path in stereo with FX coming out the Send to two monitors, can I do that in stomp??Basically I want a Wet Dry Wet rig...
Nick Hill I have a Helix Rack, but was thinking of getting the Stomp for something smaller.....so I don’t actually have one yet...I don’t want to buy one if it won’t do the WDW thing...
Thank you Nick. Glad I found this video and your channel . Super helpful. I was using the HX Stomp live for about a year pre pandemic. Still trying to dial in. IYO, is using an IR superior to a combo amp block, or amp/cab block in the chain when running out to FOH or when recording w HX Stomp? Would you use the send if feeding a powered FRFR? Would appreciate your thoughts. Cheers
I mean, it has a b7k model in it. There are people who use this for bass, run into a mixer system and then out to inner ear monitors and then front of house.
@@NickHillMakesMusic thanks Nick! I've just been using preamp models. But after watching your vid I've just this minute tried a full model and its sounds much better. If it’s a powered speaker, there isn’t a need for a power amp. I have the SeymourDuncan Power Stage 170 and use of with a 212 or 412. But the FrFr powered options make it so you don’t need a power amp. Cheers man.
Maybe a stupid question but why cant you just connect the Hx Stomp directly into a cabinet? Doesn't it have a Power Amp Sim in the signal chain? Why do you need a Power Amp like the Powerstage?
It can NOT power a cab alone. It MODELS power amp and tone stack within but does not output power. You need something like this to power an external cab. As is the case with all Helix models.
hiya, still trying to wrap my head around this whole helix thing, but it might be a good alternative for a tube amp considering i'm moving into the city area... Wouldn't a good (or possible) alternative be, using the poweramp in on a boss katana mkii? Or is this a different thing from that? thanks in advance :)
@@hugowasalreadytaken not a problem, to be honest if I had known earlier about the Katana MKII having that feature I might not have bought the Powerstage and just got a Katana to have a reliable good amp along with a modeler poweramp. But I love my Powerstage/Helix setup so I don't regret nothing. 🤟😁
Hi Nick, nice video! Question for you - if you've got a delay and a reverb on your preset and you split the path to go the the cab and to FOH, will those effects come out both FOH and from the onstage cab? I'm just trying to figure out where would be best to split it to get the effects on both :)
If you place the effects before the split, they will be present at both. If you place them after the split it will be present only on the output where you placed them.
Dude. Awesome video. Just got a Powerstage for Christmas and have been trying to figure out what works best through an Orange 212. Would you make all new presets for the Stomp/Powerstage/Cab setup, or would you just turn off the IR in each particular preset you have already? I only played through studio monitors until now and I noticed I had to dial in A LOT more bass on the power stage to get a similar sound out of my 212 that the monitors were putting out. All new territory for me. Thanks man, cheers from Texas.
Hey mate!! Another interesting video!! I have some doubts about the use of the powerstage, why is it necessary for live use if I can send the stomp with xlr directly to FOH? I mean, I have played live with my stomp directly and it sounds amazing that is why I don't understand the use of the powerstage. Could you give me info about that?
Hey man. It’s simple. Lots and lots of people, including myself, like to have stage sound. They like to hear and probably more importantly, feel some air moving. Plus, you can use it through your favorite guitar cab. Not sure what there is to not understand. It’s just nice to have these options. Many many bands who use modelers, AND in ear monitors will often still have a guitar can on stage for stage sound.
@@NickHillMakesMusic ahhhhh ok ok it's just because you prefer the air. I thought it was something like a mandatory to play live. Thanks for answering me! Keep doing such great job man!
There is no need for that path splitting. You could just use a „Send R“ Block right before the IR Block. Looks a little more clean in the signalpath. Or if you don’t want to waste one block, put the IR in the B-Path and pan the output all L/R, in case you just need mono signals.
So your criticism is how my signal path looks? Fair enough. I like they way I did it. It worked for me just fine. I didn’t even know there was a, “send R,” block. Although both ways use the same number of blocks. Anyhow, clearly there is more than one way to do this
Great demonstration 👍 I know this is probably off topic, but do you know if it's possible to use the HX Stomp to record drums with a keyboard? I know that it has MIDI connections so you can connect a keyboard, but can you play virtual drums through the Stomp via keyboard? Greetings from Lotasticland
I’m not sure how that would work with the Stomp. I think I the MIDI interface on it is for sending and receiving information to amps or MIDI controllers for patch changes. I’m sorry I don’t have a better answer.
@@NickHillMakesMusic it's fine. I thought that much, since I didn't find a single tutorial or video showing this. Now I have an excuse to not only buy a keyboard, but also an audio interface (for future Guitar plug-ins😁). Thank you nonetheless
Cool video, Nick. I'm thinking of picking up one of those HX Stomps for a small live rig. I've had a Powerstage 170 for a year or so and currently use it with a Fractal AX8. I really love how the Powerstage works with modelers. I need a modeler that is a lot smaller for some travel shows, though. Have you used the HX Stomp in a live setting before? If I've got a song with three or four different patch changes in it, how hard is it to switch through those presets with the three buttons?
Vito Marchese you get four snapshot changes with each preset. This allows for seem less changes. Taking into consideration, you only get 6 FX blocks, you should be good with that. Turning on and off delays, reverbs or boosts b
Very useful video! Question for you - how does the Powerstage 170 compare on terms of volume with a 100w tube amp? I'm guessing it's not going to be as loud. I play small stages with a very powerful drummer, and a second guitarist who plays a Dual Rectifier with 2x12. Would this keep up with the onstage sound? (I'd be using a 2x12 cab)
That may be the case. There may be some level of phase issue but the point was to capture the concept of sending the signal to front of house and also to a cab on stage.

It can NOT power a cab alone. It MODELS power amp and tone stack within but does not output power. You need something like this to power an external cab. As is the case with all Helix models.
@@NickHillMakesMusic ohh I see, thanks!!
Thanks alot, that just opened the doors for me
No problem man! Glad it helped
hiya, still trying to wrap my head around this whole helix thing, but it might be a good alternative for a tube amp considering i'm moving into the city area... Wouldn't a good (or possible) alternative be, using the poweramp in on a boss katana mkii? Or is this a different thing from that?
thanks in advance :)
Sorry man. I have no experience with the Boss Katana stuff. Not sure it would be the best use case for the helix. Unsure though
Running a Helix through the power amp in of a Katana works great!
@@Christian.Means. cheers
@@effektgeraeteinfo thanks for the advice!! 🙂
@@effektgeraeteinfo thanks for that!! 👍🏽
I've been planning this type of setup for my hx stomp as well. Very helpful & direct to the point! Just a question, would any guitar cabinet do?
What IR did you use in that preset?
Good question, I’ll get back to you

Anyhow, clearly there is more than one way to do this
@@NickHillMakesMusic Oh sorry, it wasn't intended as critics. I just thought it was a little easier to set it up this way. At least it was for me.
No man! I had no idea that send to L or R was a thing. You taught me something
Your cabinet signal is out of phase with your direct signal. Can’t you hear it?
That may be the case. There may be some level of phase issue but the point was to capture the concept of sending the signal to front of house and also to a cab on stage.
IR sounds better
