  • Having focus when we train is very important. Training on specific moves until it memorized perfectly grants you an edge. Professor Jack Taufer talks about his experience and why you should positional spar.

Totally agree. I have all of 3 months max of bjj training and felt like we were just test dummies for the more advanced students. I'd get caught by one sub then by a diff sub and another and so on. Maybe caught by same sub but in diff situation so all I learned was to stall. I asked the instructor what is the easiest way to learn since too many variations. He said just have keep rolling. I'd ask the guy how he caught me but he wasn't too good or interested in showing me since there was limited time and wanted to work on his game. Intuitively thought I should work and rework positions and was getting to that point once I got closer to certain students at same level. Unfortunately instructor decided that I should roll with a guy 60 pounds heavier and tore my ACL. That was the end of my short bjj career but still like the art by watching videos and playing around with the nephews. That was over ten years ago. Wow, where would I be now if I had a different approach back then?

      +Len Y, a black belt?

+Len Y, your story really bums us out. Part of the reason most schools require 30 new students at white belt just to promote one to blue belt is for that exact same reason you quit. An injury like that so early in your journey will halt just about every person's journey completely, never to be resumed. By limiting early injuries as much as possible through sound teaching strategies, we're able to promote 1 out of every 8 or 9. Most of our students who leave before Blue belt is due to scheduling conflicts they don't/won't work around. Those would've left regardless. We have very few white belts who quit due to injuries.

Kama Jiu-Jitsu , always felt like I should go back but just didn't think the situation would be different. Too bad TH-cam was as popular back then for me to know any better or different. Keep up the great work and hopefully can check your school out when I visit the Dallas area. Then I'll see what a good structured class/school looks like and dream what might have been.

+Len Y, absolutely. We also have a campus in Irvine, CA, where Dave Kama, Jack Taufer, and Fernando Costa are all based (I'm the only one here in dfw). You're welcome to join us at any of our academies, if you want to try lighting the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu 🔥 once again.

100 percent agree. Professor Ryan, you're giving the secrets for free. Jack is my favorite person to learn from. Great teacher, fantastic friend. Henry and Jack are the best. Henry would make us do positional training all the time. Thanks for sharing.

My academy has "spot rolling" where we placed in a particular position and must either maintain that position or escape it. For example our partner has our back and he have 3 minutes to escape. We reset once we escape or submit.

That's literally what this video recommended. Positional training with another name. In my gym we call it "specific" (específico in Portuguese), meaning we are training a specific position.

Starting out in a disadvantaged position will help with sparring. Good techniques!

Another Great video. As a spectator and parent of a practitioner I like seeing the differences in training approaches from different professors.

I've trained at several gyms, in many states and in both the US and Brazil. This level of freedom simply doesn't exist. To choose to just train a specific position for a day. And even when it does the chances you will find a partner to agree is low. Basically, this becomes an option for most after you are already a purple or brown belt. Then people respect you and just listen.

Although I agree positional sparring is superior, I disagree about what you said in the beginning about free rolling. Free Rolling develops all of your fundamental techniques (hip bumps and shrimping and keeping your arms in close and so on), rather than focusing on something very specific. Both have their place but positional is better.

Good stuff. I'm new to all this and really enjoying your videos. I don't train yet but hopefully soon. I wonder, why don't more academies have this approach of using positional sparring?

To be honest the usual reason is laziness. It's easier to just free roll and have a good time. Also that old school mentality of thinking you need to learn by getting beat up.

At our gym we call it specific training.

Should a beginner roll right away or wait a few months to learn the basics before doing so? Looks like the Relson academy I joined yesterday has newbies roll in their first class

Is Greg rocking a purple belt with a red bar ?
If so, it's the first time ever seeing such a thing

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

+subscriber10304, yes, he is. Our Jr Instructors (teachers in training) wear red bars on their junior rank belts to signify to other members they have a responsibility to be available to teach during class. We don't like to assume every higher rank member will be obligated to teach everyone lower ranked. So those in our instructor training program have a direct responsibility to help our black belt professors disseminate information. The black belts teach the junior instructors both jiu-jitsu (like every other member) and how to teach our Rickson Gracie curriculum and the Kama Jiu-Jitsu methodology.

      Thanks for the answer !
I praise Rickson as the Goat and i'm nobody in BJJ so this just an opinion :
As the JJGF goal is to unify Jui Jitsu, isn't another belt system/variation more dividing ?
I always tought the 2 white stripes around the black bar meant just that (instructor in training), at any belt level.
PS : 30 min of straight mount escape in every class is a killer idea ! Love it
Did you witness that type of training outside schools from Rickson lineage ?

+subscriber10304, you know, I really don't remember many (or any) other schools doing that kind of positional training. I just don't remember. Doesn't mean no one else does it, as well.
