Mr Chandler,l've spent the last months gathering info that could shed some theoretical light over tbe elusive, eerie, yet so hip and appealing style of guitarist extraordinaire Mr Holdsworth.. I'll definitely stick with ur clear-cut,down-to -earth explanation All the best, greetings from Havana.
Thanks for the interesting exposé. As a side note, Terje Rypdal used to make very good use of the Maj 7 #5, in a very conspicuous way, and also some of the other stuff described here (such as in "Silver bird is heading for the sun"). I find he is very much underrated. His stuff around 1974 to 1977 was stellar. You helped me understand a little bit more where he was coming from, as I used to think he was downright atonal...
Thanks Chandler. Great lessons. Here's 2 more scales to consider. Allan once called this 'Minor/Major Lydian' one of his favorites. 1, 2, -3, +4, 5, 6, 7. And the Double Harmonic, 1, 2, -3, 4, 5, flat 6, 7. As with all of these scale degree rearrangements, just getting your fingers to right address is just the beginning. The real fun comes in when you work through all their modal applications, and the 4 note per string/repeated notes on adjacent strings, string skipping goodies. Thanks again and best of luck to you.
That minor major lydian is really cool. I usually think of it as a mode of the Harmonic Major scale. That double harmonic looks like the harmonic minor scale to me, but I'll research it more. I need to practice both of those more. Anyway both are really cool scales that can generate some interesting sounds. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for watching. I haven't seen robocop is so long. I hadn't even started playing guitar when I last saw it. I'll have to watch it again and listen for that part.
Great stuff man! I did my fair share of transcribing holdsworth as well, but I always assumed these licks were diminished moving up and down chromatically, I never thought of them as being part of that synthetic augmented scale! Cheers for that!
@@philipshropshire5985 I don't like to give my name on the internet, but I do have some original music here on my youtube page. I a few peices of music floating around that I've sold as commercial music too that hasn't been posted and some songs with my band that haven't been recorded.
There are similar in some ways, but they aren't exactly the same. I believe Messaien's is a mode of limited transposition, so it doesn't repeat at the octave, but the augmented scale does. They also have different intervals.
not sure if you guys gives a shit but if you are stoned like me atm then you can stream all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of days =)
He mostly uses Dorian and a little bit of diminished I think too, but I haven't at it in a while, so don't quote me on that. He also uses some interesting sequences that move around chromatically.
I'm using a Schecter. I don't know the model name. I bought it at the custom shop here in Japan. Its really nice and its a shame they don't seem to sell them outside Japan.
Chandler guitar I really like schecters and their Strat looking models couldn’t find a 24 fret one for sale in the US. Damn shame looks awesome if you figure it out let me know. Great videos love Holdsworth nice playing man!
Sorry to hear they're not selling them there. In Japan they aren't uncommon. I believe mine is this with perhaps a few changes. www.schecter.co.jp/schecterjapan/others/bh1std24_ilb.html Unfortunately its the Japanese site, but if you look on there you can see they have a lot of strat style guitars with 24 frets.
Wow, I'm actually learning some of the licks I always wanted to... Thank you!

Thank you. I'm glad it was useful.
You have just demystified a big part of Devil Take The Hindmost, and I've known this tune for decades! THANKS!!!
No problem. Glad it helped.
Avi Jaman I was about to post the same thing. He uses a lot of phrases from devil takes the hindmost. Epic solo
An excellent explanation and don't forget Django did Augmented stuff with just two fingers!
Thanks. Django was really amazing. He has the best version of "Night and Day" I've ever heard.
@@Chandlerguitar Absolutely, and on Fleche d'Or he's pretty outside !
thank you thank you . You are such an easy teacher to follow and you solved the Holdsworth sound for me. Im blown away.

great stuff my friend I love the sound of this scale, practising now I can really hear just how much Allan used it........he used this sound a lot !!
Thanks. Glad it was helpful.
I think the scale is also used in the RoboCop (1987) score, when he goes back to what used to be his home. Thank you for this lesson!

Could this also be the very similar Messaien Mode 3? Someone on the FB Holdsworth group mentioned it

Great playing and info! I subscribed! What cheaper solid bodies will get the job done?
Thanks. I think any solid body with medium output humbuckers will get you close.
Thank you, i use to call this scale, half step /minor third .you sound alot like holdswrth
Thanks, this scale has a few different names, but the augmented seems the most popular. Thanks for watching.
I like the way you cut right true it. Not like... second strng, ninth fret, thing. Like. Not in a Holdsworth lesson.

Thanks. Cool video. It sounds surprisingly good over a blues. It gives it a nice bit of tension.
What gear are you using to get that fusiony tone?
Just Scuffham S-Gear. You can find a tutorial I did on it here. th-cam.com/video/Bpmc2jcAEdI/w-d-xo.html
