My mom used to be 4-H friends with the husband’s wife who owned this bull! We were just talking about this at home. Awesome job!

Charlie not likely. They need to sell around 20k straws of semen to break even. The bull has to produce 20k straws. Which will take a long time. Best bull collection I had on any of mine was 419 straws in one collection.
Whoever bought the bull just got a hell of a tax write off. I don’t know the Schaff’s personally. They seem like really good people and their cattle clearly work or people would not return year after year. But Herbster Angus is a write off for Conklin. Each year tops the previous year high seller. Herbster has bought most of the high sellers. It seems to me that it’s now just a pissing contest for the elite who need to hide money.
Don’t get me wrong, the elite could show up here and buy any damn critter on the farm for that kind of cash.

I doubt they'll $80 per straw. World class bull straws sell more like $275 or more per straw, 5,490 total to get his money.
I know they are selling for $80 a straw at the sale. I was there.

That is great for Kelly his family and program but how does that represent the entire cattle industry.. it is really hard to pay the bills with $1.50 calves let along spend that kind of money on one bull or sell the semen. Question is what is the average cost for a bull in the Angus herd? I own Angus cattle and this is not a good representation of what the herd is about.

I called about semen on him. It was 80 dollars a straw minimum of 10. 80 dollars a certificate minimum of 10. It wouldn't take long to pay for him. Plus his heifers will cost you 10,000 at least. So don't feel too sorry for them. It's a business decision and a gamble like any other. Sav sold a bull for 800,000 a couple years earlier

His EPD papers are like nothing anyone has seen before. Only problem I see is a bad case of line breeding.
To put it in sports terms this bull is like have Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Bill Russell, etc all in their prime playing on the same team for the next 20-25 years. No injuries and no missed games. Just keep him healthy and keep producing straws ( that is what a individual semen extraction is called) multiple straws in a single ejaculation.

Then he should be fine, they use a steer, a castrated male cow, to excite the bull before they collect the semen.
Most bulls this expensive don't phisically mate with any cows they collect and freeze their semen to be used for artificial insemination.
