    A lot people complain about oil conversions, but don’t understand that it is more complicated than just buying the source of fuel upfront. Fire risk can be a large reason as to go with oil as well.

      Yes! Also, more railroads would be interested when a steam locomotive burns oil. Of course, some “know-it-alls” always be smart alecs and ask “where are you going to run it?”.

      Greetings! Yes, there were many factors that came into consideration for our decision to change to oil, including the ones your mentioned. I think it is very commendable the level of transparency that you provide. With just a single video a month you provide everybody with the information about how the money they contributed is begin spent and it builds trust that the money is begin spent properly. In my opinion too many organizations, railroad related or not, ask for money and provide next to no transparency about how that money is being spent. What your organization does should be a standard for any non-profit asking for donations.
    Keep up the good work!

      Hello! Thank you for your encouragement. Back in 2018 ASR made the decision to provide monthly video updates to the general public, as well as mailed quarterly newsletters to our membership providing updates to the restoration and what the donations had funded. The newsletters mailed to our membership provides additional details and photographs of the work performed, plus interesting T-1 stories and profiles of our members. Soak that wood in the tender with oil before putting the bunker in. That will make the wood last longer and prevent corrosion that will happen from moisture in the wood being held against the steel causing corrosion.

    She's gonna run beautifully fellas! Hopefully your oil conversion will convince other providers to do the same, I know the friends of the 261 are heavily looking into doing so but it's my hope 611, 765 and even 2716 will do so as well. Coal is getting more expensive to burn in steam as you've stated and it'd make it possible for those engines to run the nation over.

    • @AmericanSteamRailroad
      @AmericanSteamRailroad  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your encouraging enthusiasm! We know 2716 will be going to oil as well per their web site. For a traveling steam locomotive, it opens up additional opportunities and has a lower cost. Thank you for your interest!

    Something tells me that 2100 might make a visit to the RBMN, since it contains a lot of Reading’s original lines, and 2102!
    Also, for people who’ve bought a staybolt and has already gotten it, how long does shipping typically take? I bought one about a couple weeks ago before they sold out.

    Here are a couple more questions I have:
    1. If or when the booster is installed on the locomotive (whenever that may be), does there need to be any modifications done to the booster due to oil burning system in order for the booster to work, or does the booster function the same whether the locomotive is coal or oil burning? (I'm guessing the latter).
    2. Does ASR or any ASR volunteers own guest whistles that could be put on the locomotive?

    • @AmericanSteamRailroad
      @AmericanSteamRailroad  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! Thank you for your good questions, I have replied below for you:
      1) The 2 cylinder booster engine runs off of steam, so no changes need made for it to operate whether the 2100 is coal or oil fired
      2) Yes, we have several members and donors with a variety of other steam whistles. We will pipe the 2100 to allow for guest whistles, however while being operated as the AFT 250 we are only planning to use the brand new Reading 6 Chime that was generously donated by one of our members.

    WHY NOT 2101.. BUT I'M STILL EXICTED !

    • @AmericanSteamRailroad
      @AmericanSteamRailroad  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, the 2101 is owned by a different organization, the B&O Railroad Museum, which is performing a cosmetic (display) restoration.
      When considering a return to operation restoration, other factors need to be considered such as (A) what will the costs be; (B) where can it be run; and (C) can it generate enough money to support its operation, among other items.
      We had the opportunity to get the 2100 under a lease agreement, so that is the locomotive we selected. Thank you for your interest!

    • @AmericanSteamRailroad
      @AmericanSteamRailroad  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Dave, one of our members also mentioned this, and while we won't say "never", it would hold water which could lead to corrosion issues as well as take some additional time to create. We would also need to have to do some redesign of the dipstick and filler hole as they are located on top. Thank you for your interest and support!

    ASR do you have plans to reunite 2100 with her sister? Are there any plans to run tests for performance and fuel consumption as 2102 and 2100 will be the first of any class I believe to have both a operational variant be powered by both coal and oil. Would love to see results for that and another question has Union Pacific have any interests to invite 2100 out to it's rails for operations with UP 4014/844?
    keep up your great work and dry rails to you all.

      Not a member of the society but 2102 does have her booster, if you look up the video of the engine nearly stalling while going to Jim Thorpe they use it to give it the extra power. But I’d imagine once they get 2100 running and have the time and funds they will add the booster back to it to also allow them to do longer trains and tackle more steep grades

      Hello, we will be applying for grants to have the booster restored (approximately $40,000), and would install it soon thereafter. As the T-1 has 68,000 pounds of tractive effort without the booster (as compared to 64,100 pounds for the NKP 765 which we all know is a very capable locomotive), we have plenty of power for the trips we are planning for the next several years.
