    bob "MONTGOMERY" knight is THE reason kentucky basketball never gets the recognition it deserves. People drag Adolph Rupp through the mud because they hated what he did for such a small program and place. He should not ridicule those young men for not getting an education or their school for not making sure those young men are in class when in fact everything was as it should have been. Mr. Knight has been a strong advocate for young men getting their education for a long time and for him to do this to those young men who DID do their work and who DID go to class only to be ridiculed by him is a downright shame.

    He is THE "gold standard" for not cheating at basketball. Bob Knight was a role model to his players and too thousands of normal people. A role model is someone who every one of his players credit any success theyve ever had to. A role model is someone who graduated nearly 100% of his players. Jeez, I wonder how much respect freshmen can generate in one year for a coach before they leave for the NBA. Calipari is not a role model. Bob Knight was the greatest of all time and Indiana will always be good because there is no state that cares about basketball like that area. His comment about UK is true. The school and that fan base doesn't care about integrity or academics, rather winning only. If their attitude wasn't like that for so long they wouldn't have the poor reputation they have today. Nobody "hates" the program. It's just the way most non-UK fans view that program and school.

    People keep wining about one and done and staying in college and all that. Instead of hating on the sport and coaches like Cal, tell the NCAA to change the rules, u can't tell the #1 pick in the draft to stay another year and then he tears his ACL or gets seriously injured and then his stock goes from 1 to 20 and instead of being a starter your on the bench. The coaches now have to work with the rules and allow the young men to accomplish their dreams.

May I also point out that last year's UK team recorded a cumulative GPA of 2.025, which was the lowest out of every UK athletic team and the lowest for a UK basketball team since 2002. Even if the players went to class, they sure didn't try that hard.

    RMK says it well. I agree with his sentiments and people who view him as irrelevent need to rethink that position. His way was to provide the student athlete with a solid foundation - as a player and more importantly as a productive person. That always will be his greatest legacy. That he won more than 900 games - eclipsed only be his protege also speaks to his legacy. He is more relevent now than ever.

The thing the bugged me about this is Coach Knight's assertion that "Kentucky year before last started 5 players in the NCAA tournament games that had not been to class that semester". @agish2002 I think you can look at it from both standpoints when it comes to a coach's legacy. In Cal's case, his record may be tarnished from an outside, media influenced perspective, but in the eyes of the governing body he has done absolutely nothing wrong and frankly that is all that matters regardless of our position. As far as players, I think it takes a hell of a coach to take a Freshman laden team to the Final Four beating the likes of OSU and UNC in the process.

      True. However, you left out one major fact about Kentucky win (a tournament thriller). The best player in the country, Scott May, was playing with a broken wrist. That would be the equivalent of 1978 Kentucky team playing with Jack Givens having a broken wrist. Had May not been injured, they would have been undefeated and national champions in 75 and 76. Would have been two undefeated seasons. Just because Knight is trash doesn't diminish the dominance of the 75 and 76 teams. Kentucky was not in their class in 75 and 76. Neither was UCLA. They were a powerhouse for two seasons.

    A coach can't "push" anyone out the door. The decision is theirs whether they leave or stay. When you consistently recruit NBA lottery picks, it's hard to get them to stay more than 1 year. When they have the option of jumping to the NBA to make millions and continuing their education at a later time if they choose to, of course they will take that option.

    @jcnunnink You can't argue with what the General did for his student-athletes.
    The reason so many people are upset is what he said about that team is not factual. As many people have pointed below, one of those players (Patterson) already graduated. Another (Miller) will graduate this year. A third (John Wall) had over a 3.0 GPA. If he had said "only 60% of that team went to class", he may or may not have been accurate (depending on the other two starters).

If Mr. Knight wants to just flat out say he doesn't like UK basketball that's fine. But, if he going to preach about the lessons of young men getting an education while in college (which we have all heard him do a million times) then he should acknowledge the ones who do.

    One of many reasons why I love coach Knight. I been saying for years the NBA needs adopt the MLB philosophy, either you enter the draft out of high school or committed to college for 3 years, I don’t get why that’s so hard? And let the guys who don’t want commit to college for 3 years go play in the G-League, every team I believe has an affiliate, just stop making a mockery out of college basketball. And college isn’t for everyone, I just think the NCAA needs get on board, or continue expect more scandals like at Arizona, Louisville.

    I think he is right about the "minor league" for the NBA. Hockey and baseball only have minor leagues and college shouldn't be a minor league. But with football, it is hard enough to watch, so many stoppages and no hitting the QB, but imagine watching that on a minor league level. That's why they don't want a minor league, because there are only a few good players and those would be in the NFL. As for winning, you always learn more by losing than winning. If that was the case he would have won two in a row in the 1970s. Also, look at how many double digit losses he has and how many 8 and 9 loss seasons. For a genius (BTW, He gives that nod to his mentor) that is a lot of losses. But he is correct about this minor league thing. I think sports in general send a bad work ethic message at the D1 &2 levels. It's funny, but the coach of Kentucky said that when his players don't make the NBA they sometimes call him up and want a job or a recommendation. They dont want to work. These are 20 to 25 year old kids that don't want to work, what work ethic is that. I think they see the money, notoriety and respect coaches get along with much time off and walking to work in sweats and regurgitating what they learned while playing and maybe a bit different input and that appeals to them instead of getting up at 5 every morning or 7 every morning and if they own a small business, let's say a pharmacy, they have to go there 7 days a week. Year after year for 20 or 30 years. That's out to them. But that is what makes the country what it was and could be.
    Thanks
    God Bless ✝️✝️✝️

    Yes Bob Knight may need to tone it down a bit. That said, he is one of the greatest NCAA basketball coaches ever. Indiana University has great Academic integrity, no question. Look at The team that defeated Michael Jordan in his final game with UNC at the NCAA tournament in 84. That UNC team also had Kenny Smith and Sam Perkins who went on to win NBA championships. Who on that IU team had any success in the NBA? Same with all of Bob Knight's championship teams: they didn't contain great NBA players other than say Isiah Thomas. Who else has been able to do that? Knight mentored Mike Krzyzewski. Knight had an undefeated team. Who was on that team? It's frustrating for programs that have integrity to have to compete with those that do not; though I'm inclined to believe Calipari has integrity. Anyway, just look at your facts on Knight before you judge him. If you like college basketball then you'll inevitably have a weak spot for him.

    Kids have the option of playing professionally in Europe out of high school. As long as they are on a university's dime, they have an obligation to keep up with their school work. I know the culture of amateur athletics is very different now-a-days, but these are schools we're talking about.

    In your own words, you said Jones was "not trying hard for a rebound" yet he averages more rebounds than anyone on IU and he's not even our main rebounder. So what does that say about IU?

    Coach K brings in some of the best players in the country too. Should he be investigated? Cal should be questioned for being a great recruiter? What about Bill Self? Didn't your coach bring in some good players too? Crean actually has a violation on his record. For the millionth time, Cal has no violations on his record because he had nothing to do with Camby and Rose! The NCAA never investigated him EVER! UMass and Memphis would have had their Final Fours taken away no matter who coached there.

    @GreenDay1981 No, but they have come closer than UK has recently. And yes, I think Zeller can make a big difference. Have you seen our team play? Our post players are awful. We finally have a legit big man coming. I don't think he'll be a monster in the paint, but I think he can make others around him better. And I agree that having Bracketology this early is ludicrous. But it shows that there is confidence that IU can succeed next year. That's all.

      Austin, you're an idiot. Camby took money from a sports agent when he was a junior. Rose had someone take his SATs before he came to college and was cleared to play by the NCAA, after the season was over he was declared ineligible.
      You're a perfect example of someone who reads the headlines, not the story, then tells everyone the "facts."
      I'm not even a Coach Cal defender, but, at least I know what happened unlike yourself.

    That's very true. You should play the hand you're dealt as best you can. With that said, it takes a lot more guts and integrity as a coach to do what is "right" for the player that you've recruited to become part of your family. Cal will never be remembered as a great coach despite his many winning seasons. How can you really be considered a great coach if you only end up coaching a player for a total of about 5 months (the course of the college basketball season - midnight to March madness?)

    I hate how people blame Calipari for the lost F4s. Camby deserves blame for the UMASS one, but he was still a 20 y/o who'd never seen the type of money these scumbag agents offered him. Blaming him for Rose is even worse. Every school in the country wanted the kid, and it would have played out the same at every school. If you want to claim he's making a mockery of the "student-athlete" tag that's fine. I see him as doing his job the best he can, but I understand why some people expect more.

    The one-and-done rule is an NBA rule, not an NCAA rule. Knight really ought to know that, for somebody who knows so much about college basketball. Knight also wants guys to stay 3 years. Unless you're Patrick Patterson or Kemba Walker, that doesn't get you a degree. If he's so proud of his graduation rate, how does going to school for 3 years do anything?

  • @jruss831
    @jruss831 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seeing everybody graduate, probably the shinning star of Bob Knight's career a certain Isiah Thomas went to school for only two years. Once again the general is showing why its a general good idea for him not to talk. OHHHHH...C-A-T-S CATS CATS CATS!!! And by the way Mr. Knight, its the NBA not the NCAA that has the one and done rule. GO BIG BLUE!!!! Kentucky, where GR8NESS Happens.

    @wetwilly0 When I went to Indiana, I went to EVERY class, not just "very often". That's what a college STUDENT does. And I never had a tutor.
    Oh, and you named exactly TWO players who were both "great students". What about the other TEN or so?? I'm sorry, but I've heard Demarcus Cousins speak in public. Not exactly a nuclear physicist we're talking about here, the guy sounds like he couldn't tie his own shoes.

    @mrbobevans I guess you haven't seen IU's 2012 class which is already regarded as the No. 1 ranked class. And I never said IU was going to beat UK next season. I just said watch out because Crean is landing some big time recruits for future classes. And good luck getting both Knight and Jones to come back. Calipari will more than likely push them out the door like he did with last year's freshmen.

  • @walka24
    @walka24 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @BobbyDigital4242 I concede that is relevant in some cases, but when we are talking marquee programs like Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, Duke, and even Indiana, the revenues from the athletic programs cover all athletic expenses, including athletic scholarships, all while pumping millions back into the schools academic budgets. The whole Europe argument is valid, but the exposure from college basketball is almost invaluable, especially when you talk shoe contracts that are based on hype and popularity.

  • @GreenDay1981
    @GreenDay1981 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just heard that two of IU's freshman basketball players have been suspended 9 games for receiving improper benefits. I guess we can blame Crean for it since the IU fans/UK haters like to blame Calipari for stuff that has nothing to do with him.

  • @joshwheeler82

    Does he also realize that Patrick Patterson started on that team... who graduated in 3 years? I also believe that the APR that governs the academic progress of the team would penalize UK if that were anything even close to remotely true. What a true jerk.

    @hoofhearted4uk Why was Rose's brother getting free rides with the team at Memphis? Why did one of Cal's assistants make impermissible phone calls to Cousins? Why did he recruit so many players with academic issues like Rose, Dozier, and Bledsoe? Why did Rose have to drive to Detroit to take his SATs, which happens to be the hometown of Worldwide Wes? Why did Calipari take a new job not once but twice when his program was about to be hit by penalties?

  • @Meteorunner
    @Meteorunner 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Orton was the only one who didnt' attend class that last semester. I agree Calipari doesn't do a good job keeping tabs on the education of his athletes, but telling false information doesn't get you anywhere and especially believing it. I agree with his philosphy of going pro or staying 2-3 years, but really since the 80s there have been no scandals attached to UK Basketball, thats the facts.

  • @MrLcmcb

    I didnt even use the word lying? Rebounds do not equal wins. Points do. Rebounding well helps no doubt about that, but by your measure the team that rebounds more will ALWAYS win... come on, open up your eyes. Teams win games all the time being drastically out rebounded. IU wasnt a big rebounding school last year, may change in the future with more talent, but no were near the level of a school like MSU.

  • @walka24

    @agish2002 I think you have to look at a coach's success in terms of how his/her teams perform in conference and in the NCAA tournament, not necessarily the players involved. Take Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens for example, they had some experience on their teams, but not much big time talent. UK and UCONN both had little experience but loads of talent. I think it takes a great coach in both scenarios to see success.

    NOTE: Mr knight repeats the term kid. these kids, those kids, them kids. Folks were talking about 18-23 year olds. They are considered adults, They must do whats best, for them! 1 year, 2 years what have ya. I could see a mandatory 2 years in college. If they leave after only one year, they must set out 1st hafe of NBA season. Theres your answer, let the kids and their families do whats best....for them, not whats politacaly correct. GO CATS!

  • @GreenDay1981

    @jw870206 How is it Calipari's fault? He doesn't make the rules. If the one-and-done rule is so wrong, write to the NCAA and demand that they change the NBA eligibility rules. Besides, it's not like Calipari is the only coach to have one and done players. He's not. Coach K and Jim Boeheim did. A lot of teams do. College football players aren't allowed to jump to the NFL until after their sophomore season. I wouldn't mind if they made the same rule for college basketball but I doubt they will.
