  • In this week’s episode of “Cocktails with a Curator,” join Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator Xavier F. Salomon as he explores a wonderfully curious elephant-shaped wine dispenser, one of the exquisite pieces of Du Paquier porcelain given to The Frick Collection by Melinda and Paul Sullivan in 2016. Although much remains unknown about this extraordinary vessel, it may be related to an elaborate object made for Empress Anna of Russia in which cup-bearing figures attached to a rotating tray pass beneath the trunk-shaped spout of a porcelain pachyderm. You can study the delicate grapevines adorning the Frick’s wine dispenser in the celebrated “porcelain room” on the third floor of Frick Madison. This week’s complementary cocktail is a glass of Tokaji wine, a favorite drink of 18th- and 19th-century monarchs produced in the Hungarian region of the same name.

What an absolutely delightful program. Thank you so much for sharing the wine and the interesting history of the porcelain. When the program started I said to the screen... my goodness, is that an elephant? (smile) and then Xavier answered my question ! Thank you again for this wonderful series!

Hello Xavier, how delighted I am to have just discovered your wonderful series which will keep me occupied for some time I'm sure. I am a retired (87) Australian Potter and Ceramic Artist, and also an avid collector of Antique Ceramics. I have several videos on the subject here on my TH-cam Channel. I did study Antique Ceramics at the Met way back in 1975 and have also visited the beautiful Frick Museum. Thanks so much for giving us the benefit of your superb knowledge ,presented in a remarkably friendly and easy to listen to manner...cheers........Les

"This is a truly extraordinary and bizarre object." How I love Xavier's wry comments and the perfect deadpan delivery of these nuggets of curatorial connoisseurship (o; Bravo, Xavier, for another highly engaging, edifying and diverting examination of one of the Frick's many treasures.

Great presentation! Many of these items were featured in "Fired by Passion", a book on Du Paquier porcelain. Did not realize they were part of the Frick collection. Was the Frick involved with the making of that book?

Xavier, each and every episode has been fabulous. Who would ever think we would end up learning about an elephant? I am already on "repeat", watching episodes from early on. All I can say is thank you from all of us for all of the fun Fridays, great cocktails and more importantly, the introduction to so many beautiful treasures. You have done a superlative job. The Frick is so lucky to have you. Thank you
