  • This lovely traditional hymn was written by Civilla Martin on a Sunday afternoon while at home, having been unable to go with her husband to a preaching engagement due to illness.
When her husband was considering cancelling his preaching engagement to stay with his wife, their young son said, ‘Father, don’t you think that if God wants you to preach today, He will take care of Mother while you are away?’
When her husband returned, Mrs Martin gave him the lyrics to this hymn and he immediately sat down and composed the music for the song which was later published in a song book in 1905
I’ve sung this song in a gospel style, as recordings of the song in a Gospel style are the ones that most speak to me and touch my heart.
God is love. There is absolutely no doubt that He cares for each one of us. The Bible tells us that if God is able to clothe the grass and feed the ravens then he is able to look after us ( Luke 27:28) and that if an evil man knows how to feed his children, then how much more will our heavenly father provide for our needs? (Matthew 7:7-11)
The rain falls, the sun shines, crops grow and are harvested. One season follows another. The Bible tells us that God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. We enjoy a fertile earth in a habitable atmosphere and consciousness of self and of God.
No matter how problematic life may be for us, we can find a place of rest, refuge and restoration in God. The Lord has also sent the Holy Spirit to be alongside us as a comforter and guide.
Awful things happen in the world, more so to some than to others, but none of us are exempt from suffering and grief. May our Heavenly Father, the one who sticks closer than a brother give us comfort and courage to endure, even overcome the worst adversities that we face in the world.
No matter how bad things get for us, God said that he would never leave us nor forsake us.
May the love and care of God empower us to live and to live our lives for him and for one another.
