This channel is the truth. Dj Quik got the most underrated discography ever! His best to me always switches between Balance & Options and Rhythm-Al-Ism
DJ Quik is the best producer/rapper in the history of hip hop. Original grooves, way better bars than most producers who rap, can work with anybody, crazy consistency. The OG is beyond reproach.
I’m not a huge west coast head..But DJ Quik is one of if not the best rapper producers not just on the west but EVER!! He’s one of my top 5 producers ever
You hit the nail on the head with this one bro. Safe + Sound is my favorite Quik album and his best album. I still bang this to this day. From front to back. That album is a classic! This came out when I was in high school when everyone was bangin' sets and this album was the soundtrack to those years.
Cool to see a DJ Quik ranking. Great list. One of my all time favorite artists. For me, ranking his albums isn't easy because it changes every other month or so. But basically my list looks like this: 1 & 2. Safe + Sound/Rhythm-Al-Ism (both contenders for my no.1 and it changes from time to time. Maybe I have more days with S+S as my no. 1 but it's still a toss up) 3 & 4. Quik Is The Name/Balance & Options (same thing here. Just like how 1 & 2 were tied so are 3 & 4. Recently I've been going back to B&O more so at this very moment I might say that is my no. 3. It's really close tho. I'm sure that next time I'll say his debut is better) 5. Way 2 Fonky 6. Under Tha Influence (currently I think Way 2 Fonky is better but I need to relisten to Under Tha Influence in full to be sure. So maybe next time it's over Way 2 Fonky)
These lists are so well thought out, so well done. You really did Quik's catalogue justice here. Glad you also included a snippet from his recent appearance at KDAY's 40-year anniversary, where Quik highlighted some of his "ghost" contributions to certain songs and albums as a co-producer and engineer. I still want Quik to go more in depth about the "ghost" work he did on Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound, because I consider that album a g-funk classic, and sonically, one of the '90s best albums. Quik, Dr. Dre, Daz, Soopafly and Death Row's in-house engineers and musicians were creating sounds in that analog era that still sound better than most the sh## in this digital era. As for this list, no major disagreements. Agreed with the top two. I still consider "Safe & Sound" basically an unofficial Death Row Records album even tho it came out on Profile. Sonically, Quik's "p"-funk sounded in line with the Row's g-funk, and the themes were unabashadly partying, fuc##ing, getting drunk, gangbangin' and dissing rivals lol. Good to see "Trauma" get its flowers. If that project was on a major label witta budget behind it, it would be much more appreciated. "Pacific Coast" with Ludacris and "Black Mercedes" with Nate Dogg, with the right promotion, would've been hit radio singles and videos. "Jet Set" and "California" with AMG are other sleepers off that project. I'd probably flip "Way 2 Fonky" with "Under The Influence," but that's a minor one. Those are both 4/5 mic projects, and on par with each other. Quik's an absolute unheralded legend. I hope he gets his real just due, while he's still here. My fav production of his outside of his own are for singles, "Let's Get Down" with Toni Tony Tone, and as far as albums, "Street Gospel" by Sugafree, which is a certified west coast classic.
Yes. Very accurate. I agree with every critique. I am so happy you mentioned summer breeze. My favorite song of all time. Book of David was a great album. AMH, mosberg, hi,-c, sugar free! Sugar free alone. That's another level. You need to make a video just on him and his albums and songs. I digress. Roger omg, and dabarge. Classic. DJ Quik is my favorite rapper, next to the Boyz . Compton all day. That LA sound. Mixed with Compton, South Central Watts. DOPE time for music. Do you know by chance who sung the hook on summer Breeze? My favorite line, Sumner breeze flowing to the end, let you know I'll always be friend and I'll always be here. She hit that note. Omg thank you for this. That's what up
I usually disagree with these types of lists, but this was very accurate IMO. Your reasoning in ranking S+S over Rhythm-al-ism was spot on. I try to explain this when talking about the two, but S+S has a certain edginess to it while sounding polished at the same time. Theres a contrast that I really havent experienced on any other album. Rhythm-al-ism is his best produced album, but S+S will always be my favorite album of all time in any genre.
I'm glad CT is finally ranking albums from DJ Quik. IMO, Quik is as good as Dr. Dre as a producer and artist. Thank you, DJ Quik. Thank you, Culturalist Theory.
It's something about the production of Safe + Sound and Dollaz N Sense... 2 of the best produced songs of his. Also what he did for Snoop Dogg on No Limit Top Dog was classics ( Don't Tell, Doin Too Much and Bussin' Rocks).
Ok...ok... I fucks witcho list. After 2000's _Balance & Options,_ I have no idea. No love lost - it's just that after a while, fans move on from following they favorite artists' new music. It happens to most artists. My favorite Quik LP is probably _Safe + Sound._ _Rhythm-al-ism_ is ill too nah. Don't get me wrong nah.
I can't decide. They're all really good. If I have to pick one then I'll maybe say Quik's Groove III but the others come close too. My other faves are II, V, I, VI and the one from Book Of David
Bruh we got shit that nobody's ever heard that will definitely change your opinion... how ever this is interesting. I love to this type of feedback. My Dude is definitely the 1of the 🐐 GOAT... and yeah I'm Bias so what!!😎👌🏼 Love you bro
Same. His production, especially in that mid '90s to 1999 era seemed more suited towards r&b. He did produce alot of songs for Danny Boy and Jewel'le, neither of whom's albums were released by Death Row. The songs are all over TH-cam, however, and you can hear a few that could've been hits back in that era. James Debarge was with Quik for years. I would've loved to have heard those two create an entire project.
DJ Quik is top five dead or alive in my book. Amazing episode. When it comes to number 1 album its always a toss up for me Safe + Sound or Rhythm-al-ism. Hopefully we get blessed with a new Quik album soon. Also he always rocks the stage when preforming live.
Ima Quik fan from New Jersey… No disrespect to none of his albums but, Quik’s dopest production is on that joint album with kurupt, BlaQKout.. Very underrated sonically..
21:34 He has a few different lyrics and also a third verse where he disses Everlast from House Of Pain in the original version of his song Let You Havit th-cam.com/video/Fe_y2wjZgSE/w-d-xo.html
Quik Is The Name and Way 2 Fonky are his best albums in my opinion and I will always say the biggest crime in Rap music history is that we didn’t get a Quik, AMG, 2nd II None, Hi-C and PPC collaborative album. They made some of the best posse cuts and had the best chemistry.
Quik is #6 in my top 10. I think he is severely underrated lyrically. Of course, I don't agree with this rating 100% but it's not a bad one by no means. Book of David and Way 2 Fonky are way too low imo. Way 2 Fonly is my 2nd fave Quik album. I know most don't love it but it's special to me. My ratings fav to least fav is: Quik Name, 2 Fonky, Rhythm-al-ism, Influence, Book of David, Safe Sound, Trauma, Bal Options, and Midnight Life.
Rhythmalism is my favorite quik album but not made y’all had Safe & sound at 1. For me I would have “under the influence” higher. I loved a lot of the songs.
Safe + Sound is Quik's best album. Because he discovered Warryn Campbell and G One, who ghost produced that album and some of the follow ups with Rob Bacon. Carl Small (Death Row's percussionist) also played the flexatone and other percussion on that album and subsequent releases. Quik Is The Name is his 2nd best. It was really produced by Track Kendrick, Courtney Branch, Stan Jones, Rob Bacon, and Quik. Not just Quik. Not sure why he lied his whole career about being "America's Most Complete Artist." BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rhytm-al-sim is his 3rd best. That s&&^^ was produced by Warryn Campbell, G One, Rob Bacon, Carl Small, and Quik. Trauma is trash. Quik fell tf off, starting with bs Balance & Options.
If It Wasn’t For Him We Wouldn’t Have The Walking Legend Suga Free If It Wasn’t For Quick He Would’ve Not Got Suga Free’s 1 Year Deal At Def Jam Recordings That Distributed His Classic Rap Album Street Gospel
This channel is the truth. Dj Quik got the most underrated discography ever! His best to me always switches between Balance & Options and Rhythm-Al-Ism

I agree with the assessment. Quik is my favorite hands down since 90. ask anyone that knows me, from North Carolina.
I'm 42 years old, NY native my whole life and never did I know the LEGACY of Quick till Now.
thanks DJ Quik

I've always been mystified that Quik hasn't taken the helm as producer on someone's R&B album. It seems like a no-brainer.
Same. His production, especially in that mid '90s to 1999 era seemed more suited towards r&b. He did produce alot of songs for Danny Boy and Jewel'le, neither of whom's albums were released by Death Row. Where's rosecrans?
Quik is #6 in my top 10. I think he is severely underrated lyrically. Of course, I don't agree with this rating 100% but it's not a bad one by no means. Safe + Sound is Quik's best album. Because he discovered Warryn Campbell and G One, who ghost produced that album and some of the follow ups with Rob Bacon. Carl Small (Death Row's percussionist) also played the flexatone and other percussion on that album and subsequent releases.

Flygod shouldve been ranked higher. Also no mention of Reject ???
If It Wasn’t For Him We Wouldn’t Have The Walking Legend Suga Free If It Wasn’t For Quick He Would’ve Not Got Suga Free’s 1 Year Deal At Def Jam Recordings That Distributed His Classic Rap Album Street Gospel
I always thought dj quick was a better producer than Dr Dre. Just my opinion
