PART 2 - the rest of what, for my standards (!), was an amazing mornings salmon fishing. Following on from Part 1, I headed upstream rather than going to work just yet..., to fish two more pools. I'm glad I did as I got another couple of good fish. The last pool I was actually heading back to the van and you can see the pool from the van, so I decided to delay work again and head down for a a typical fisherman's 'final cast', an I'm glad I did...
I realise the video is probably longer than ideal so under no illusions that people might not watch it all. If you did watch all or part of it, I really appreciate it and feel free to leave me a comment if you want. Once again, thanks to the subscribers, people that liked and commented on the videos.

Thank you. I think I may struggle to replicate last season which was great for me in terms of numbers, given the scarcity of fish on the west coast. Been struggling for time to get on the rivers and we’ve had good water this wk and big tides. Managed some very short local trips and have done well with small sea trout. There seem to be decent numbers about but hopefully I’ll get a bit more time to go after the grilse/salmon. Hope your season is going well 👍

Try a magnetic bracelet for your tennis elbow. I suffered for ages. After trying everything a fellow fisher persuaded me. I admit I thought it was BS. 2 weeks later it had gone.

Thank you Chris, I’ll have a look into it. My left elbow has been a bit better recently though still not quite right. Definitely a combination of stripping fly line or that movement coupled with my job. Really appreciate the suggestion, all the best 👍

Nice one - I really like minimum handling of fish - that way they survive to do their job. Well done!

Cheers Philip, I try my best, not always perfect or easy depending on the bank / depth of water, but it’s nice when they behave and the unhooking goes easy. All ours are Cat 3 rivers so they have to go back and it’s nice to see them swim away afterwards as you say, hopefully to carry on the cycle successfully.

I think this is your best one yet Matt! though I love the sea trout and Loch brownies too. Watch out for the locals sending you back to Yorkshire! 🤣🤣 just shows, when you think the water may be well past peak time??? I don't know how its possible to go out sparking after that! Amazing pal, I think you may need a rest from fishing for a bit now! 🤣👍

Very kind Dave, well I’m still here after 17 years, though I’ll never be a local 😆 i know, the river was lower than i’d deem ideal, but they ripped up that theory i had and put it in the bin. They were just on, that river seems to have had better numbers this yr, it’ll be interesting to see who’s been catching tomorrow at the Storr Lochs last cast. No idea how the Snizort is fishing, yet to have a cast there, hoping to get a full day on our upper beat before the 15th Oct, it needs a proper spate to show its best up there. All the best, thanks for lovely comment 👍

I did, and it drifted down the river 😆 no, cheers for the advice, it’s hard to keep it together sometimes when you get a salmon on, but you are correct, sound advice. All the best.

Here in Norway where i live i have only caught one single salmon on the retrieve so i never use it anymore and definately not in pools with that much current, i just go down on leader and size and fish them regularly with 2 rodlength of leader and a size 14 fly fished with a loop knot. Now the rivers here are many times the size so that might mather but i still catch quite a few even if it seems to me that the line isnt moving at all. but after all it's the same target just different ways:)

Thank you for the comment and advice I really appreciate it. It’s amazing that this can connect with anglers from places like Norway. It sounds like you have had a tough season in Norway, is that correct? I hope in what remains of your fishing this year you have good luck 👍
I will try as you say. I use a sink tip line usually so in slightly lower water I tend to retrieve or manipulate the fly. I rarely fish a full floating line but maybe I should experiment. Even in higher water I would swing the fly initially but usually impart some kind of movement or retrieve, it may be the influence or trout fly fishing or even pike fishing. The first fish in the video I noticed I paused after the fly landed so it must have sunk slightly and then on the first pull of the line the fish took, maybe it took the fly on the drop and the pull didn’t instigate the take. It’s all a learning process, and sometimes just done on autopilot not even thinking. I am comfortable on these smaller rivers I’m sure I’d be lost with a double handed rod on a big river 😂 all the best 👍

well i dont use pure float very much exept one beat in the Orkla river whe rethe current is too slow and the beat too shallow for anything ellse. Exept that i use pure sinking lines or a float/ sink combo and i think each man has to finnd his own style and way to do things in his home waters and i dont think it mathers much HOW you get them to take as long as they do:) Ahh yes , my season. Almost forgot that. i spendt about 55 hrs and landed 11 with a top of 21 pounds so it was ok i think.

What a morning you had. I think you did very well to make it into work after that morning 😅. I never made it down to the river the other morning felt guilty for going when I was supposed to be at work. If I was self employed I would have been down like a shot 😅

For all the times I moan at my job or the stress that can come with it, it does allow me more flexibility and I do try to remember that. Like most people that fish, i need it, gives you space away from work when all you focus on is the fishing or the surroundings you are in. We’re all lucky aren’t we, to me it’s the best kept secret 😆 shame you couldn’t get out, you’re obviously very diligent, hopefully you will this weekend. Thanks again all the best.

@highlandfishingdiary8818 I'm struggling on Saturday to get out so think it is looking like getting the perch rod out on Sunday instead. We are very lucky to have such beautiful countryside to explore and occasionally seeing a beautiful fish 🤣.

@@Hardlinesangling final comp tomorrow over here, I think i’ll be chucking half a rabbit on a sinking line in desperation for a rainbow as the last two comps were rock hard. Should be good craic, plus we’ll get the club boats in. I’m hoping to do more piking this winter than last, i usually go with my lad piking as he likes the bivvy and brewing up hot chocolate 😆 good luck with the perch, never tried for them up here though i’ve fished Meig twice with our club in comps and perch were caught by others. They’re a great fish. 👍

@highlandfishingdiary8818 I'm planning on getting out piking this winter too. Going to do a video in a few months when on the bank going through the single hook rig we use especially when the water is warmer.

@@Hardlinesangling I shall look forward to that, it’ll be interesting to see your set up. i do enjoy a bit of piking, it’s my link back to coarse fishing i used to do. The venues up here are so much different to the drains, canals and lakes I used to fish in for them.

You see, you obviously have the same lines in your repertoire 😂 Sept/Oct are always the same, the fishing time is running out and you need to be there if conditions arise and it might fish well. Sometimes you can’t make it work, but I guess some things just take priority. Tbh folk see my van in off beat locations and tbh a lot of customers know me, know I fish and are like “oh, i saw your van at such and such, out fishing i guess?” 😂 i can always catch up on Oct 16th….👍

I use to go fishing with my grandfather when I was a kid. He would get drunk until he couldn't walk and let me drive the boat. He was also known to eat minnows for good luck and he smoked marijuana
