Consultative Process for appointment of Election Commissioners। In Depth । Drishti IAS English

The SC has denied an interim stay on the new law that is enacted to regulate the appointments in the Election Commission of India. For the very first time in the Indian Democracy, we are using the consultative process to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. The composition of the selection committee has changed and the constitutional validity of the New Law is in challenge before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

It is very difficult to remove the authority of the Chief Election Commissioner once appointed by the president, as two-thirds of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha need to present and vote against him for disorderly conduct or improper actions.
All Election Commissioners have equal say in the decision making of the Commission. The Commission, from time to time, delegates some of its executive functions to its officers in its Secretariat.
