I used to be a libertarian. I even went out with a libertarian friend and tried to recruit people, like Mormon missionaries do. The people wanted data to back up our claims though. So I looked up the data.
The data didn't say what I wanted it to say. It said the opposite of what I wanted.
I tried to share what I learned with my libertarian friends. It was important stuff that they needed to know. But they didn't want to hear it. They just kept repeating the same false generalizations as always -- stuff I had believed too, before I looked for evidence. And they got quite mad at me for trying to give them data.
So I'm not a libertarian any more.
And I can't support pretty much anything from the conservative half of the US's political spectrum any more... or even what passes for "centrism" these days. Almost none of it matches up with the data.
Ideally, the center of the political spectrum would line up nicely with reality. But in the US, it doesn't. It's not even close. The only policies which actually align with reality now are considered "extreme left". :(

@@ToyKeeper The data that the melting pot of 350,000,000 much less the 7.5 billion of the world would align under the control of one government is not available. We are a Nation of every race, religion and culture and your Utopian Federal Government is a dream in the hands of mankind. I am not apposed to government, but want to keep it close; family, church/civic organization, community and State: this will allow the citizens to keep their treasures close and hold their Representatives more accountable. Let's have Liberty to voluntarily join and fund the organizations that best represent the causes that are important to each of us. The Federal Government needs to again be limited to its original responsibility of defending Liberty.

Align 7.5 billion people under One Utopian Federal Government? Lol.
Someone brought up empirical data and how useful it is for making informed decisions, so Tim changed the topic to scary imaginary things nobody proposed. Surely, that's a logical way to debate and learn.
Speaking of fanciful scary things nobody was talking about... it might be time to lay off the Fox News / Breitbart / RT, or wherever you learned to Gish gallop with all those conservative talking points.
Unless you like being lied to. That's okay too, I guess. I don't understand it, but it's not my place to judge what people do in private.

Our manpower (even in the face of surges and deployments) is at historic lows we haven't seen since the post-Desert Storm drawdown, albeit servicemembers are better paid than they have been in the past. Previously we lived at poverty levels. Now it's...OK-ish.
The problem is big ticket items being sold on contract by BAE, Raytheon, Boeing, etc., and even more pricey: the repair parts & FSR services from sweetheart deal contracts. These are easier to hide and sneak into the budget than the sticker price of a whole F-35. We simply made better buys with our cash and got more for less before 9-11.

The next Democrat in the White House will need to clean up: The soaked bed sheets, the national debt, the claw marks where the current president resisted being removed from office, the yellow marks on the carpet right after the claw marks, the half-used vat of skin bronzer, the relations with other countries, the trade deals with other countries, and the cells needed by anyone that tried to do something illegal in cohoots with the current administration.

It's like having a roommate that never does the dishes. As long as you keep doing the dishes they are fine with that. I think what we need to do is spend like crazy and leave an even bigger mess than the Republicans so they will be forced to raise taxes and cut the military. Once we have universal healthcare and free college, no president will ever be elected who does not support that, in the same way that getting rid of medicare or social security is the third rail for politicians.
