  • The Astral Plane, realm of dreams, thought, imagination, home of the celestial gods and the planar dragons, the Astral Dragon is a sleek and awesome creature, almost the embodiment of freedom, and a fierce enemy of the Githyanki.

    Here's my theory; the tails of astral Dreadnoughts all connect at the end, they are not a race with many connections but one creature with countless 'heads' or more accurately fingers it is using to manipulate the astral plane.

      A group of more than ten dragons is actually called a "Thunder of Dragons" due to the sound their wings make. However on Abeir Toril, a large group of dragons might be called a "Rage of Dragons".

    • @ziggyocculto2359
      @ziggyocculto2359 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Group of eggs = Clutch
      Group of wyrmling-young = Brood
      Group of adults = Flight
      The standard collective nouns for groups of dragons are:
      A flight of dragons
      A weyr of dragons
      A wing of dragons
      A thunder of dragons
      A group of dragons is also referred to as a "Clan"
      This is because that Dragons are supposed to be sentient creatures, so if they traveled together it's because they chose to be a part of that "clan" for reasons more than just being in a group.
      But my personal answer to what do you call a group of 10+ dragons is...
      YOUR PROBLEM!!! I'm getting my 4th level cleric's @$$ outta here...lol

    I'm building a campaign world that uses a group of pantheons, three of which are real world pantheons, being Celtic, Roman, and Norse pantheons. When you get the chance, could you do a video on real world deities and religions in DND, and maybe give some advice on how to accurately depict them, while staying true to the game? I've seen a bit on this topic in published books such as the 5e Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide, but I was wondering if you could go into a bit more detail, as you are so good at doing. Thanks for the videos, they are really helpful.

    AJ, this is great. Amazing stuff, as always. The astral dragon is often presented as wingless. Got me thinking about some of the lore regarding Lentys and Tamara, two of the three platinum dragons. I have read the lore on which you based some of your content in your Bahamut video. If you were introducing lore of Bahamut - and perhaps of Lendys/Tamara - into a campaign based primarily in, say, Waterdeep, what would be some reasonable paths to acquire that lore?
    AMAZING video. Astral dragons are a new one for me. Can't wait for next live chat! No deadly snacks this time

    Sounds like good ideas for plot hooks, they can really be anywhere. And somewhat interesting as a specific sorcerer with Draconic origins, although I wonder if the sorcerer sprouting wings would change. I was also reading Unearthed Arcana recently with some Gith player origins, which had me wondering what would make an interesting character, which I was mostly thinking of as a horizon walker ranger, which could be interesting to have a Githyanki with dragon favored enemy for hunting Astral dragons, rather than just thinking of hunting Ilithid.

      You good folks don't see the wall of spam and vitriol I have to deal with when I post any videos on that topic, also, the vids on demons and devils come under constant fire.. blocking all comments is a good reminder to everyone that commenting is not a right, it is a privilege and this channel is not going to tolerate abuse of that, I value this community and this safe space we share. Anyway, people have commented on other video threads about that vid, and sent me personal messages, so, it is mainly the trolls who stomp off it a fury, more reasonable viewers just post on the previous, or next vid.

      ya i can see that no reason to get RL politics involved in a non politcal channel though I'm not sure if a general videos about gods would attract those sorts people as much as vids talking about various fiendish denizens though maybe instead of doing that pretty much by default maybe only do it if a videos comments end up overflowing with such content and it doesn't seem like its going slow down since im pretty sure the only people who do that aren't actual viewers but people who are just looking to cause trouble. plus i think if people don't feed them they won't stick around.

    • @crazy13alex
      @crazy13alex 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      AJ Pickett There are several questions that I need answered if it's not too much trouble.
      Can an astral dragon become a dracolich?
      Can dragons be thrown into the abyss for any reason, such as divine punishment?
      Can a dracolich's phylactery also be tossed into the abyss?
      Can a dragon be turned, or ascend/descend, into a demonic dragon?
      If so, who or what in the Abyss would do such a thing?
      Is it possible for it to rise to power as a demon lord?
      I'm...weaving a story together. The end goal I'm aiming for is that the demonic dragon (elder brother) safeguards the phylactery of the dracolich (younger brother) somewhere within its own body while it rules over its own realm in the abyss.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can a Astral dragon become a Dracolich, yes, they can.
      Yes, dragons can venture or be 'thrown'into the abyss, the abyss is just a lot of interconnected, corrupted planes, so, yep. Same with a phylactery, it is an object and can go anywhere. Things don't generally go from being demonic to un-demonic, things certainly can be corrupted by fiendish energies and become demonic.
      Prolonged contact with weaker demonic taint, or direct contact with powerful demons, can corrupt mortal creatures, including dragons.
      Demons gain power through destruction, chaos and torment, they drink in chaos and disruption in the same way undead consume negative energy, demons gain most power through challenging and destroying other demons, absorbing all of their power, but when there is order, life and peace around them, they are driven to bring it to ruin with an insatiable appetite for violence and cruelty.
      It could be that the dracolich can summon the Fiendish dragon to kill and destroy, which would empower the demon and also feed power into the phylactery, nourishing the dracolich.

    • @crazy13alex
      @crazy13alex 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      AJ Pickett Thank you so much! You have no idea how excited I am now to put these thoughts on paper. That is exactly the kind of bond I want for the two dragons. This is just the general summary and direction if you're interested. I still have to fill in the holes in-between.
      Prologue:
      A pair of brothers in life, two astral dragons and among the earliest of their kind. Their history wiped away from mortal thought.
      The younger (Noruk): chaotic neutral. Noruk studied necromancy and gathered a following, began to worship Orcus. After nearly a century of gathering enough powerful liches and necromancers, Noruk stripped away his chains of mortality and became a dracolich. Under his rule, many cults gathered and the dracolich spread his shadow onto as many worlds as possible. After decades of war against the living and few divine factions, Noruk's phylactery was discovered and cast into the abyss. While the soul within it would suffer once the dracolich's body was destroyed. At least...that was the intent.
      The elder (Akoth): lawful good. Akoth watched his brother descend into madness everyday and demanded he cease this pursuit of madness. Noruk assured him that he would, Akoth kept a watchful eye yet gave his kin the benefit of the doubt. In secret, Noruk had continued his work and cast aside what he was, then alluded his elder once he began his campaign. Akoth watched his younger's campaign but could not convince him to stop. Upon learning of his brother's defeat and the phylactery that held him being cast out into the abyss, Akoth crossed through in desperate search of it. He was not seen for eons.
      What do you think so far?

    are there any adamantium, platinum, mithril, etc. dragons? What would they do? Is there an amber dragon?
    and a second question. The strange liquid pond where mind flayers keep their young, what does it do when somebody drinks from it?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Pada LAN, great questions! Bahamut is THE Platinum dragon, there is only one as far as I know. I don't think there are Mithril dragons (file them under 'silver'), there are Adamantium dragons, I talk about them in my video on Bytopia. Can't find anything on any Amber dragons.
      Drinking brain pool fluid? Well aside from it tasting REALLY bad, there is a very high chance that you are going to get infected with the parasitic illithid larvae and begin the process of Ceremorphosis into a Mind Flayer. The process requires magic to stop it, once the saving throw is failed and the transformation begins, and then it is just a matter of days before the characters mind is completely overtaken by the parasite and the character is no longer playable.. it becomes an NPC monster. Turning a Mind Flayer back into a player character requires a wish spell or equivalent.

      I don't play D&D, but Bahamut is the only platinum dragon that people know of. Yet I'm sure that more exist, but they are probably in another plane and when they do venture to the material plane it is only to act as heralds in times of trouble while polymorphed as humanoids.
      Other than that Bahamut probably ensures that any other Platinum dragon doesn't venture onto the material plane, they would be his offspring after all, and the moment a platinum dragon enters the material plane is to carry out some god's plan to rescue worshippers from a great evil or to prevent evil from destroying the prime material plane. Or sometimes to watch over other creatures and report back to Bahamut.

    So with that being said, how does almost certain insanity and death make sense for this creature from a game mechanics and balancing point of view? Does it have some huge edge over the rest of dragonkind that would make that kind of hobbling necessary?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "You create a finite plane with limited access: a demiplane. Demiplanes created by this power are very small, very minor planes. This power works best when manifested while you are on the Astral Plane. Manifestation of this power creates a local density fluctuation that precipitates the creation of a demiplane. At first, the fledgling plane grows in radius at a rate of 1 foot per day to an initial maximum radius of 180 feet as it rapidly draws substance from the surrounding astral ectoplasm. Once the new demiplane reaches its maximum size, it doesn’t really stop growing, but its growth rate decreases to only 1 foot per week (approximately a 50-foot increase in radius per year). Once your demiplane is created, you can travel to it using astral caravan, plane shift, or some other power or permanent link that you arrange for separately.
      You determine the environment within the demiplane when you manifest genesis, reflecting most any desire you can visualize. You determine factors such as atmosphere, water, temperature, and the general shape of the terrain. This power cannot create life (including vegetation), nor can it create construction (such as buildings, roads, wells, dungeons, and so forth). You must add these details in some other fashion if you desire. You can’t create lingering psionic effects with this power; you have to add those separately, if desired. Similarly, you can’t create a demiplane out of esoteric material, such as silver or uranium; you’re limited to stone and dirt. You can’t manipulate the time trait on your demiplane; its time trait is as the Material Plane. Once your demiplane reaches 180 feet in radius, you can manifest this power again to gradually add another 180 feet of radius to it, and so on.
      Antigenesis: If genesis is manifested on the Material Plane, the power takes effect and the demiplane begins to grow at the rate noted above, but it gets no larger than a radius of 1 foot per level. The energies of the new plane are exactly canceled by the energies of the original plane, creating a dead spot like a limited cancer on the original plane. The expanding boundary of the dead spot wipes away all construction, crumbles natural land forms, and evaporates water, leaving behind a uniformly level area of inert dust. Living creatures that pass the boundary of the growing dead spot are not directly affected, but plants can find no sustenance in the dust of the dead spot, water-breathing creatures die quickly when water turns to dust, and mobile animals know enough to leave the area alone. Once the wave of change passes, no special essence remains in the dead spot, and it may be colonized naturally over the course of several years by bacteria, plants, and animals."

      AJ Pickett I must sit right now I would love to play a game of D&D with you as the DM just throwing that out there it's awesome that you knew exactly what I was talking about my favorite class is the psionic classes either the psychic Warrior or the true psionic and I'm sad the way they changed them up everything I've been able to find about I'm in 4th and 5th edition sucks granted I'll admit they were way overpowered in 3rd Edition and in second edition I've been playing for a long time

      All that being said I found it interesting how powerful they can actually become if you knew what you were doing I had a character that I played since second edition and he found a way to forcefully pull psionic energy out of any living creature with a very unusual device in his little pocket Dimension his Demi playing as you put it he would capture powerful beings that he could and he would subject them to this drawing all their energy out and storing it in a crystal from which he drew energy this allowed him to use powers a lot more than your average say psionic player

    I'm not a huge fan of the Astral Dragon. Not my cup of tea, I guess.

      Personally I am not a huge fan of tea (I drink a river of coffee though), and as of yet, have not used an astral dragon in one of my games.. never say never though.
