      You could probably say the same about most Olympic disciplines - that they aren’t that interesting to watch for the masses. And I suppose that’s the reason why I haven’t watched the past few Olympics, apart from the marathon and some other running events. But then again, the idea of the Olympics is that these are meant to be primarily amateur athletes, and so you need to keep lots of sports with limited appeal, otherwise it will be just pros competing. So removing speed walking and other traditional Olympic categories might result in Olympic Games not really being about the Olympic spirit anymore, but a massive commercial event (which they are becoming more and more each time).

    Just fantastic to see Kipchoge setting the new world record. What a legend. And in the same year Kilian sets UTMB record time. I must say they are equally legendary and GOAT in their sports. This is a very good and interesting video. I agree with your arguments. When Kilian raced a top 10 K road race here in Norway with almost all Norwegian elite runners in 2020 he placed 18th place. At the same time he has the world record for Everest, is the best mountain runner and ultra runner of all time, and is a world class randonee skier. Are Norwegian elite runners therefore at the chance of competing with Killian in a 10 K mountain race, or a half marathon mountain race? Of course not. In UTMB the best runners use poles uphill and keep a relative slow pace and climbing 10.000 meters plus. There's just so much specificity when it comes to mountain races like UTMB that I dont think Kipchoge would do or succeed in a race like this. I am not even shure he has the build for it. But it for shure would be exciting to watch. But the main difference is, Killian is also one of the best mountain climbers in the world, not just an endurance athlete.

    It took 20 something years for the likes of Kilian, Francios and etc to develop their skills in the mountains and adapt their bodies for the races like UTMB. In the same fashion it took over 30 years for Eliud to develop the skills and body adaptaitons for flat world record-setting road marathons like Berlin. So, NO I dont think he can beat Kilian time in UTMB or win UTMB for that matter, given his age once he quits road marathon racing (probably after paris 2024). For the same reason we normally don't see ultra runners with road running background win rugged 100 milers like UTMB (like Jim for instance). It just takes a lifetime of patience, learning and dedication to become the absolute BEST in the world in a single field . But, as you said... all fun and games and very interesting topic.

    Always an interesting debate with what where and how athletes would do at other events away from their norm. Be fair to say Kipchoge is the GOAT of road distance running and he is in his sweet spot of athletic ability. However, besides the massive aerobic engine on the guy, the mindset and skill set he has and incredible efficiency for steady state economic running, the further anyone gets away from their sweet-spot distance or sport the worse they do, relatively speaking. This comes down to energy system development or potential and muscle fibre types too. There are limitations on trainability. Usain bolt would run a pretty good 800m due to speed reserve and anaerobic lactic tolerance, but id say the next jump to the mile would be a different beast altogether.
    Id say he (kipchoge) would still be the one to beat anything on the road up to 100k's (but imagine a Killian, Jim and Kipchoge race at 100k's...phew), but longer than that things might change a lot for kipchoge.
    With respect to trail, well that's a different animal altogether and he may or may not go well there. That being said, lets bare in mind, the African running training groups do all their work on dirt trials or off road, and in the mountains on lumpy tracks, they are not pure road trainers. The technical co-ordination is the big factor, walk/run style movement and self management would be the challenges to learn and adapt to. But he does have an un-limitable mind that really, no one else quite matches.

    Fun speculation. I definitely think Kipchoge could win Comrades. If he chooses to try ultras in, say, his 40s after Paris. He could also put up records at the 50k and 50 mile distances. But the more mountainous a trail race the more it becomes a sport that's quite different from road running.

    Comrades has, as you said, a very long history, with a huge data set. Lindsey Parry, the official Comrades coach, suggests you multiple your marathon time by 2.5, which gives you a good estimate (+/- 10min). So a 2:10 marathoner could potentially run around 5:15 to 5:35. For Kipchoge, that would be 5:03, so 4:53 to 5:13. There are 2 men's course records, obviously, the down run is 5:18:19, while the up run is 5:24:49. The other little know interesting issue is that the course is not always exactly the same for each down run or each up run. This year, for example, the down run was around 900m longer than the last down run. That aside, Kipchoge could well be the first to break 5hr, for a down run. The up run, although around 3km shorter, is such a brute of a course, all the way to Polly Shortts, that it's anyone's guess what he could run. The 2022 winner ran in Alphaflys (he is actually a full-time security guard at a local university), which would suit Kipchoge, I think. You've done it, so you know how tough the course is.

  • @murraylynn7631

    Interesting to think about. I agree that he would probably do very well on the road Ultras. The transition time might be similar to his transition time from shorter distances to marathons. He would be pretty fast pretty quickly there.
    Mountain ultras would take a bit more time, especially the technical ones. He could do it, and be good, but the technicality may limit his competitiveness. It would be like taking a downhiller or slalom skier and putting them in a mogul skiing competition. They could do it, but it may not be pretty and they likely wouldn't be that competitive, especially off the start.

    • @fastinradfordable

      Wouldn’t be competitive at the start?!?
      At the start of ANY ULTRA- the fact he could nose-breathe 4:37/mile. …

      And then match their pace easily

    I think Kipchoge has the potential to be the best in a completely different sport like mounting runnig. He is used to the high altitude, he is doing uphill repeats for decades, he has the power, the speed and the endurance. But he definitely will need some time spent offroad to get used to non so runnable sections, big climbings, technical downhills etc. But here, in my opinion, is the big question. How long potentially this transition is going to last, one year? Two? Or even more ? And does Kipchoge has the time. Officialy he is near 38 but for a lot of people he is much older and they have solid arguments. Let's say he is at his early forties. Does he has two or three years for traing and racing in mountain ultras ? In age of 45 to be the best in the sport ? I don't believe it. So does Kipchoge have the potential to win UTMB for exmple, I think so. But does Kipchoge have the time to do it? Probably not.

    Thank you for your regular input of very nice and useful content, also whishing the best of luck with your long term recovery and future endavours. One question I'd like to ask is around the area of the cardiac rate zones during high intensity training. I'm a 51 YO male who has been running in the last 5 years, I completed my first marathon late this spring and typically I go for HMs. During my youth I was doing extremely intense road cycling for ~15 years, then for 2 decades I did much less sport due to family and work commitments. I've always been bordeline bradicardic so my HR normally is very low. So, the question is how do I keep the HR into a specific zone during the high intensity sessions? Knowngly that the measurement can be all over the places, still there are so many spikes during the activity that is hard for me to really focus on one specific zone. Is that normal or requires some special attention to make sure I don't mess up the specific session?
    Thanks in advance

    You have to take in more calories/hr than marathon distance. If you don't have a strong stomach, it'll be hard.
    As for UTMB ... forget about it. There's no money, and he's not about to learn how to power hike, run tech downhills, in 40+yrs of age against world-class elites who have trained in the mountains all their lives. No one rich enough can incentivize him to do that ... UTMB doesn't even offer prize money! LOL

      Not only have I read that book....I'm actually interviewed in that book (I sat down with the author Adharanand Finn in a Boulder coffee shop and we also went on a run together). I'd say the sample size is just too small now. Top ultra runners (even mountain ultra guys) pretty much all have the fitness to run sub 2:30 marathons (and many sub 2:20) already. It's still a pretty niche sport though compared to major road marathon running in terms of numbers (especially at the elite/sponsored level)

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe part of the reason. I also think a lot of them haven't heard of UTMB (I certainly hadn't...even when I was first sponsored as a road marathon runner in the US!). But yeah, many would go for a way to make an actual Olympic Team and win Boston/NYC or London/Berlin/Rotterdam etc. It's also hard to pass a lot of barriers to entry into races like UTMB too for example.....you need all the gear, all the "stones" and it's confusing on how to get into with a valid ITRA or UTMB index etc. Then the cost of traveling to Chamonix in the mountains? It's not something even most top American road marathoners would know about or even want to do.

  • @marcweeks9178
    @marcweeks9178 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kipchoge has physiological gifts. (It was once said that in order to become Olympic champion, one has to pick their parents very carefully.) He was tested in a lab and found to have a high but not atypical VO2 for an elite athlete. However, the study found that he uses a greater percentage of the oxygen he takes in than those other elite athletes. Add to this the other finding that Kipchoge accumulates lactic acid more slowly (or something like that) than other elite athletes, meaning he doesn't get fatigued as quickly, and you can bet that he would be able to hold a fast pace for a long way.

    • @Vo2maxProductions

    I think Kipchoge is on a different level to Kilian. Ultramarathons are still such a niche sport. UTMB winner gets $2,000. Boston winner gets $150,000. The europeans wouldn't stand a chance on trails if the elite Africans came to play.

      I think a couple of years back Kilian ran a competitive road 10k. He finished in 29.59. Yesterday Kipchoge ran a 10k in 28.20 DURING A MARATHON. Jim Walmsley is the worlds greatest flat trail ultra runner. He cant crack 2:15 in the marathon. Yesterday, by the time 2:15 had elapsed Kipchoge had already completed his lap on honor, given his interviews and was already looking at the parcels of land the Kenyan government were awarding him. Yes. He's on a different level.

    • @patrickmorris8934
      @patrickmorris8934 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mathieudube6907 Or to put it another way, most winning ultra-runners are failed caucasian marathoners. Imagine if the real elite African marathoners gave it a go!!
      93 Kenyans and 55 Ethiopians ran sub-2:10 marathons last year. Only 1 American managed the same. To think trail running is a different enough sport that Africans wouldn't dominate is western hubris.
