    This is our trawler life story.
    We retired early and decided to make a big change. We sold everything and moved aboard our 54' Cheoy Lee passagemaker, a “go anywhere in the world”, ocean going power boat.
    That was in 2014 and we have never looked back.
    Now in our late 50's we are free of work and we are living aboard and cruising our trawler full time.
    We have two additional crew members, feline brothers, Blake and Barkley. Yes, we have two brave (sorta) boat cats, on board!
    Join us and our crew, on our adventures as we explore new places, discover more about our trawler and what makes her work, and learn more about ourselves in our young retirement years. Our hope is to entertain and inspire you to pursue your own passions through telling our story of our cruising trawler lifestyle.
    We end most episodes with a “Trawler Q&A” where we answer your questions.
    Thanks for watching, subscribing, and liking Cruising Sea Venture!
    Best, Jim, Rosy, Blake and Barkley

    My takeaway from this one is:
    1. The bulbous bow does for slower (and larger) boats what automatic trim tabs and engine trim does on a "go-fast". Keep the bow trimmed down and minimize the pitching. Biggest advantage over tabs is, the bulb is entirely _passive_.
    2. The paravane setup does what a Seakeeper gyro or a fin stabilizer system does to reduce the rolling. I'm going to guess that the paravane costs significantly less than either a fin or gyro stabilizer system would have.
    Great presentation guys, thank you for sharing this information!

    The guys over here in the North Atlantic use spray rails mounted on the bows of their fishing trawlers and lobster boats to make the ride drier. I'm happy this project added some benefits. I admit I was skeptical but optimistic as I had heard success stories with a bulb. I wasn't sure if those stories were hyped up to keep owners and installers from losing face or if it was legit. Thanks for taking us along for the ride and giving us an honest assement.

    This is something I have been thinking about. Your observations are very interesting. We are on our way over the top of Australia to the Kimberly region ,and then maybe complete a circumnavigation. We currently have rolling chocks on our hulll ,but a bulbous bow and paravanes are a consideration before the great Australian Bight. Looking forward to more sea trials. Best wishes to you both.Brian and Sandra Dorling

      Hi Brian, I would think the rolling chocks work well. I bet you have watched our series on the refit where we added the paravanes. They really work, in all conditions. Plus they are simple, easy to fix, etc. The bulb will take more time to come to any final conclusions, but so far so good. After having paravanes, I wouldn't spend much time in open ocean with them. Thanks for watching, Jim

    My guess was $25k . I was thinking when you showed the testing of the BB that you were getting more spray across the bow because the yacht is going through the waves , not over them as much. I would love to see a view of the yacht moving through the water. i.e. from your tender as the yacht is moving.( or Rosy could use her new drone) I think that you would really see if your yacht is squatting on take off and how the water is moving over and around the bow and also any secondary wave it creates. I was really interested in the fact that the bulbous bow was filled with sea water, I had not even thought of that, I actually thought it was empty (air filled) . Thanks for the education. Learn something new every day.

    I did have twenty thousand in mind, pretty close guess. You now have the bulbous bow, the fish to the side, where are you going to mount the home built seakeeper?
    New to your channel, who's the builder of Sea Venture?
    If you want to know if the weight of the bow is affecting ride/trim, test it both full of water and empty.

    • @CruisingSeaVenture
      @CruisingSeaVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. The bulb weighs 1,300 lbs. It added 1.4% of the weight of the boat. Our initial sea trials were with 1/2 load of fuel and water. The video you saw was with full load of fuel and water. Sea Venture weighs 90,000 when fully loaded, of which 26,000 lbs is fuel and water (2,158 gallons of diesel and 1,200 gallons of water). On a 1/2 load the stern actually came up just a little. As you could see in the video, on a full load (most of the added fuel was in the stern) she maintained the same trim. Thanks for watching. Jim

    Glad that seems to have been a success for y'all.
    How nervous were you on that 1st sea trial, that it handled terrible and gonna have to cut it off, ha.
    If it ends up truly gaining .5knt and rides that flat, that would be huge in my opinion.
    Curious on how it handles in big following seas, if it wants to bow steer. Will be following this, thanks

    • @CruisingSeaVenture
      @CruisingSeaVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far, so good. I think the question about following seas is going to be interesting. Sea Venture tracks ok in following seas, or did before I think as a result of the main center keel and the two fin keels. Will it hold the bow back, causing the stern to swing around more? Will it act like an additional keep and help it track even straighter? Will the reduction in deceleration in the trough reduce the desire for the stern move over and pass the bow? It will be interesting to find out. As we observe more and learn I will do some blog post updates on our website. Still lots to learn. Thanks for watching, Jim

    I have really enjoyed your videos! Great enthusiasm and passion for the cruising lifestyle!
    My guess was $35,000.00 and I was pleasantly surprised at your actual costs. I guess I'm used to Southern California prices.
    What an amazing difference in pitching you have achieved. It will be interesting to see how the vessel behaves when you travel south in open waters along the West coast. In my limited experience off the coast of CA in Ventura, that when heading in to the swell, the bow has a tendency to rise over the waves as opposed to piercing the waves. Obviously this in advantageous as the wave height increases. It will be interesting to see how the bulb and the added water weight affect the ride in bigger seas!
    By the way, it's almost as much fun watching you cruise and work on your boat as actually doing it on mine!
    Defever 53 POC 1986

    • @CruisingSeaVenture
      @CruisingSeaVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael, Glad you enjoyed the video. The bulb is not water tight, it's flooded with sea water - it has a hole drilled in the top and bottom. Based on the design elements detailed by the University of British Columbia Marine Research Center, the bulb should dampen the roll, and you can see, but not reduce the roll so great as to be an issue in large seas. So far, when we have run into larger seas / swells the bow certainly still rises and falls, it just isn't quite as much and not as sharp of a movement. According to the math in large seas instead of pitching 5 degrees, Sea Venture should pitch about 2.5 degrees. Time will tell. Thanks, for watching, Jim

      @@CruisingSeaVenture Oh, ok. I did not hear that part but thank you for the clarification. As far as the type of water, can I assume that it was distilled or demineralised water? Thanks in advance.

    • @CruisingSeaVenture
      @CruisingSeaVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually it just floods with sea water. Then the next question is what about marine life that can grow inside? :)
      Regarding the critters - this is going to be interesting. What we have been instructed to do is when the boat comes out of the water to let it dry out for a couple of days, then plug the bottom hole and fill it with fresh water mixed with bleach and let it set. This, in theory, should flush most of what is inside out. Wonder how you will know? One day we will learn. It mostly likely will be 2-3 years before we need to haul out, so it will be awhile.

    • @CruisingSeaVenture
      @CruisingSeaVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. It would have to be a whole lot weight. Sea Venture weighs 90,000 lbs. The bulbous bow added 1.3% to the weight of the boat. In the bow of the boat is our 150 gallon black water holding tank. Between full and empty that is adding 1,000 lbs right at the front of the boat, and it does not change the trim at all when the tank is emptied. Thanks, Jim

  • @Racerman51
    @Racerman51 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Two things to consider... the weight of the bulbous bow for not only the fiberglass, but the sea water in it doesn’t want to move very easily. In order for the bow to rise, it has to pick all that weight up. Also, to move that volume and size object vertically through the water as the bow attempts to rise and fall is difficult and takes a lot of energy. Those two things contribute to the efficiency of the bulbous bow in reducing pitching. This was a wonderful video. The benefit far outweighs the cost.

  • @MrOlddave
    @MrOlddave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Something you may not have considered. Cruise ships don't flood their bulbous bow unless they anticipate heavy weather. Might be a good addition to add the ability to flood the bulb or pump it out according to sea state. That would not be a very expensive modification.

    • @CruisingSeaVenture

    Congratulations! So happy to hear the Bulbous Bow worked out. Both videos were very enlightening and entertaining. My guess on the price was way off.... I thought it would be much more expensive, especially after watching all of the labor involved in the installation. The side-by-side videos of pitch verified that your ultimate goal was met... very cool. Looking forward to watching and learning more. Cheers from So Cali.

    I was 451 dollars to high at my 20K guess. But you probably spent that much for cat food, your food and drinks while in the ship yard. Nice report! About your USCG boarding, I am a USCG Vietnam Veteran ET1 (plank owner/first crew of one on the SE Asia Loran C stations which we built in the summer of 1966 at Sattahip Thailand, and was there for 11 months). A few years back my friends were just finishing up a CG boarding inspection outside Fisherman's Bay on Lopez Island, when we came along in our 3388 Bayliner "Endless Summer", which we had for 19 years , and Greg said to them, that guy is an ex Coastie, go board him!!! Which they did.

    She sure looks much more stable with the bulbous bow. She is your vessel, if you notice the difference then it's all worth it. Are there. a few cons? Yes, but again, doesn't matter if it improved your ride on your vessel. I wonder why Nordhaven doesn't do that on their boats, at least the smaller range. I bet the new n41 would benefit from a BB.

    You simply must love
    "BULB CAM DOCKING".
    I've heard that greed has a tendency to lower ones IQ.Could it be considered being greedy if you guys were to copyright that?
    I personally don't think so.It is nice to know that another loving and intelligent couple are living AND enjoying their dream. Calm seas and many safe journeys and adventures to you guys.
    Amazing results It's going to be so smooth you'll not want to stop at anchorage or port.Lol
    I think I have read or heard that waves come in sets of seven,the seventh having a different sized trough and or crest? If so the"thumping" could be caused by the second wash created by the bulb reflecting that difference. I don't know but at least you guys have given food for thought worthy of investigation.
    I don't gamble but I would bet the farm that fuel efficiency has increased due to the pitch being reduced, as you thought. Less energy is being spent getting vessel back to plane and keeping it there. Increase in waterline length as you mentioned definitely helps if that can be factored in.

    You folks are phenomenal!! You've accomplished exactly what you set out to do with the bulbous bow. Frankly, I was estimating about $40K, but then again, I'm from NY and that would probably be close. Only 10K for labor over a 13 day period....amazing !!.

    The reduction of pitching compared to the original bow makes the addition worth it.i can only imagine how a boat of that size would perform if it was designed for the bulbous bow

      Spot on the price of the new doors, $10,000. Doors themselves are right at $8,000 plus $2,000 installation labor. They should be arriving in about 10 more days. Thanks for watching, Jim

    Super delightful to learn and understand what it takes to own and maintain a beautiful vessel. I'm not a boat owner but enjoy learning and starting to understand the technical details. Looks like a complete success to me! And as you say this is a large success for a moderate cost really. Secondly...Rosie...get that drone in the AIR!! Jim has a drone but hardly uses it. Not sure why, maybe he is afraid to crash it..lol. So Rosie please drag that drone out and do some filming. And lastly I actually guessed 20K. So I was pretty close. Awesome video and I would bet this video will be played for many many years as a great info source for bulbous bows on Trawlers. You have managed to fill quite a void regarding information. Looking forward to more data.
